I just read the blog post one more time and it really strikes me as condescending and patronizing. "We're SOOOO sorry we let the forum deteriorate into a pile of shit, and stood by and watched as you held it together and tried to make something out of it, while having fun in the process. We're SOOOO sorry we ignored your cries for help, for assistance, for a little attention. We're sorry for lieing to you with calls for resmods, for pretending we wanted your input, for empty promises for new forums, for trotting out idiots to deal with you. We're just beside ourselves in sorrow."

Stick your Jive up your clearspace.

Indeed.

However, I can't say I'm surprised.

At least there are alternates, and if one does wish something "official", making and voting on appropriate JIRA issues may, some day, yield results.

We can hope, yes?

Or brandish some stick-like Jive... As the lady says.

I'll probably remain a low-dosage user at SLU. I enjoy the Virtual Business forum and the general forum, primarily. I generally don't read off topic. The fashion forums are nice, and there are really nice means of giving feedback to posters without incurring new posts. Just stay away from Joshua and all is swell! :)

I don't believe they have any more intention to listen to JIRA issues about their forum software than they have listened to anything else anyone has said about the forums and blogs.

They've had what, eight months to fix the report a bad post button and make the editor work with Internet Explorer? They aren't going to fix or change a thing. Ever.

I thought Joshua left, for the good of the SLU and Cris and everything?

Told you, I'm a low dosage user. I was not really into the game for a while because of rl. I missed that. Even so, I don't see my usage there ever rising to the level of my usage here a year or two ago.

You know how they said they would archive this forum?

Remember how they archived the xstreet forum?

It is sad that the scripting and building forums will be deleted. But the sad reality is that everything about SL is going to be monetized. And skills represent value.

I won't be expecting any of the bytes here to remain available for very long.

Maybe someone can run a script and save all the pages?

What is missing from the Xstreet archive? The link is still there and the archive looks the same. Did they take some parts out?

The shopping forums link was changed to https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/commerce?lang=en ages ago.

As so often, you have probably identified the heart of the matter.

I posted on the "What will it take to prevent the demise of the SL Forums?" thread on the new place. For a while I kept on getting my email box blighted with individual 'someone has replied to your thread' individual emails. I was pleased when it stopped, as I thought maybe...just maybe...this was a bug fix....errr...no. Lord knows how my Inbox would cope if I'd received thousands of emails from the undying thread!!! I actually just flicked back to the "what will it take..." thread, only to find it had been closed. Hahahahha - Oh the irony! I just feel like they are saying "We'll try and make you believe we're listening, but don't actually expect us to REALLY listen to you".

I am really sad to see this place die. Like many others, I have come to grow to love these forums and lurk about in many sections. Find and request useful information, with ease and correct reliable information in the replies, and enjoy thoroughly, the various obscure threads that pop up. If they are opening it up to non LL residents, then all I can think is that anything we all see as 'fun' will be deleted rapidly from the new blog (alleged forums) to make it more 'presentable' to 'potential new residents'.

My biggest problem with the new place is that - I actually can't read the new forums. I don't know what it is, I just can't seem to focus on the lines, and get lost. Feel like a kid again, holding a finger on the line and reading the words as I move my finger along, and believe it or not, I still miss a line sometimes! I do have Dyscalculia (number dyslexia) that is colour affected, so I don't know if that is the issue, but it didn't help when I wore my old green lensed glasses that I had to wear in college to stop the numbers blurring and appearing as something different.

The 2 other issues I dislike right now - is the fact I have to scroll my screen right over to the left everytime, and the staggered responses makes a thread uneasy to follow - but that's just my opinion.

Henry T Ford is quoted to have once said, about the invention of the car, "If I'd asked my customers what they wanted, they'd have said a faster horse." And it's true - change sometimes is pushed through for things, that even if we all start off thinking it's a bad idea, it turns out to be great. However, at the moment, IMHO, instead of a faster sleek better machine in the new style forums, all I see is a barrage of rapidly moving flies, over the corpse of a dead and rotting old nag. For me, the current appearance, style, colour scheme, and useage, of the new forums, render them absolutely useless for me.

:(

Here's what I posted on the blogrum thread ...
From: someone
* More Focus: As part of the transition, we're removing some redundant forums and streamlining others, so you can more easily find the information you're looking for. We want the forums to be about conversations with a purpose; to that end, we're paring down to some of the most focused forums, and letting other conversations continue off-site, or even better: inworld. The forums have become jammed with cruft over the years, and we'll be paring down to a smaller number of top-level forums to make it easier to find the conversations you're looking for.

Sounds like RA will be going then. We need some space somewhere for open-ended discussions that may get heated or go off-topic now and again. You know, the sorts of threads that get stomped on in SLA, with the suggestion that they would be better suited to the old forums. I think it would be a poor move to force all such discussions to external sites where LL has no control.
From: someone
* More Transparency: Another goal is to broaden the potential audience for our conversations. As part of a larger strategy, we're removing the sign-in requirement for viewing forum threads. Anyone has been able to view threads in the past, by registering a Second Life account. This change removes the need for registration. An account will still be needed for active participation. But this change will make it easier for current Residents to get information they need, and gives prospective Residents further insight into Second Life.

I think this is unwise. An amount of dirty laundry gets aired on the old forums, both in terms of residents' behaviour and LL's failings. Do you really want all that to be visible to any casual visitor to the site? I know anybody can make an account and view the forums, but I think it takes an amount of pre-existing interest in SL to bother to do that. On the other hand, if you are not going to provide any space for people to discuss contentious issues in the first place, perhaps it's not a problem.
From: someone
* More Extensibility: Because it is much more scalable and flexible software than vBulletin, moving to the Clearspace software allows us to add new features and make other changes and improvements with greater flexibility than we've had in the past....

I'd just like something that works as a proper forum. I have been completely underwhelmed by this new software so far. I also wish you'd get rid of the idiotic points sytem.
From: someone
The vBulletin forums will stay open until the new forums are up and running ("Last post" threads, anyone?). And we certainly don't want to get rid of the content that has been built up in the forums over the years. The forums represent a wealth of valuable Second Life knowledge and history there, and we're happy to announce that we'll be archiving that information on the Web, largely in response to Resident concerns. When we archive the forums, they'll also be indexed by public search engines, as will the new forums going forward.

While I am very pleased that the old forums will be archived, I am greatly alarmed that they will be indexed for public search. This feels like a betrayal of trust. The old forums have always felt like a semi-private space, accessible only to the SL community (yes, I know nothing is private on the web and blah-de-blah...) and this has influenced how people post there - what gets discussed, how it gets discussed, the confidences people share, which they may not be willing to do on a publicly accessible forum. I wonder how many people will spend the next week frantically deleting old posts... Please rethink this idea.

I'll give the new forums a go, but I haven't seen anything yet that makes me think they'll be my sort of place.

Gee, I need another 95 posts to get a nice round 2K.

Would anyone care to help out and engage me in a lengthy and pointless argument? Please don't fight dirty for the last word and make me do >2000 posts.

We've seen it in action Peggy, the commerce forums are the old Xstreet forums. Resident Answers looks like it has already been replaced with SL Answers, a place where Lexie tells people discussions aren't welcome.

Although if you want to discuss it she says take it to the forums. But if the blog becomes the forum. Ow.

well, I need another 3 posts ... 2 now ... to get to 1000, so perhaps I could start an argument with you and then run away? :D It needs to be the sort of argument where you are thoroughly in the wrong so that others will carry on arguing with you after I have posted twice and then scarpered ... any ideas? Go on, say something contentious ... and wrong ...
