Technically "We" didn't. They won't have the consideration to make the announcement here.
They did announce it here. Have a closer look at the Resident Answers forum - above the stickies.

How amusing. No replies possible.

Blue's title ("There For You";) appearing next to his name is a sort of black humor, I guess.

It was a joke lol. As in that angelfire atrocity is the worst web page on the internet. But it is a bad design example to learn by. An example of feature overload with no added value.

Until you see that second craptastik site that looks like it came from Idiocracy. I fear SL will be turned into that second one.

I hadn't actually looked, but after I did -- yep, it looks like an Angelfire site.

The second one brings back memories of the advertising on the back of old comic books. The place that had x-ray specs, whoopie cushions, rubber dog doo and other such silliness.

I've no idea what NSFW pics are, but I hate them already :)

Therefore do not send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

I think Reductio ad Absurdum is more appropriate given the details presented today.

Gosh, I stopped by forums while I ate and now I'm totally dejected.

It just kinda feels like we are to walk on faith the next year in SL, while being told nothing of the future, meanwhile sinking money and time and creative effort in. It just kinda feels like we are expendable, and that's not a great feeling.

Yoz, Blue, it's good to see you enthused about putting work into any sort of discussion tool.

Blue, certainly I've talked MYself blue in the face over the last two years with suggestions, offers of help, critiques of new formats, cheerleading, etc. I'm not going to wade through all that detail again. As at least one other poster on this thread has mentioned, it is quite possible to configure Jive's product to look and feel like a VB-based forum, with simple heirarchical navigation and a long "New Posts" list. With a simple-to-find "User CP"-type comprehensive list of the threads I personally have posted to. The faults in the editor, the fact that HTML is the easiest way to quote anything other than the previous post ... bleah, I said I wouldn't do this.

Next - you are going to make the forum archive searchable by everyone on the web using Google? Everyone who posted to the forums in the years that they have existed did so with the understanding that they were an SL-only repository of information and conversation. I hope you mean that they will be made available to Google search on the authenticated portion of this website, and not publicly searchable. That would be a gross violation of trust.

Lastly - it has been a privilege to assist new arrivals to SL's community in the forums. It has been an honor to know the experts, clowns, and warm hearts of the forum residents who've grown up there since the "General Discussion" purge of 2006. Thank you to all the residents whom I've come to know there!

Well, the 3D multi-user game creation system called Stratosphir is scheduled to open in February. It's no SL, but it does let you build 3D things, and it has a forum. A forum like God intended forums to be. There aren't any Jive powered forums in the Bible, are there? They're all vBulletin or phpBB.

Wahhh, they're closing my forum. Wahhhh... :( :(

Maybe we can have a little hope.

Here's a Jive powered forum I found... seems pretty nice.

Oh, they're running Jive Forums, and old open source forum from the same people. That was a UBB clone much like vBulletin of the time, but written in Java. I'm afraid that it's a very different bit of software from SBS :/

Yeah, what Brenda said. I would assume that being Yale U they would actually have some sort of clue as to what's needed for their users to be productive. It does look a million times more usable than the flogs, so it's possible, but I tend to think LL's effort will fall miserably short of that.
