Ahh, but that's the rub isn't it? Perfectly normal to be what we call "weird" on in mixed company. We get home, alone, and the monster comes out from under the bed more often than not.

There's... there's... a monster... under *my* bed? Eep!

Here in SL, we can be what we are. We can be what we wish to be ... which actually IS what we are, in a manner of speaking. Some people pretend to be what they aren't - beinginstead what they are in some darker, less-explored recess. Or, they simply are what they are, with far less constraints.

QFT. We're usually more ourselves in SL, as dragons, or furries, or even as kids than we might be in the real world. We are often showing aspects of ourselves in SL that are otherwise hidden away in the "real" world. It's not lying, it's unfettered expression.

I always say that in SL I'm just me... only more so.

Who doesn't?

Back to the topic, though: aren't most folks who opt to use Second Life as a creative and/or social outlet deviant by nature? It is not the "norm" of society.

But why be normal, when we have a much more interesting universe next door?

Mari

I think it's perfectly normal to *want* to have this level of creative and social release; we're just constrained by the societies we live in more often than not. So while the behavior we witness in SL is not the usual ... it's certainly not what can often be called abnormal. Outside of SL, it's more often simply repressed.

Salem...I'd ask if I could have your stuff, but I'm sure that it's all so squeaky clean and sterile that I'd just die of shame to get my greasy fingerprints on a single shining item.

You are of the "SL as Facebook" school of thought.

When will people realize that there is a whole different approach to SL used by many people: "SL as a Second Life"?

Both approaches are valid, but they will never agree. The Facebookers call the SL'ers "liars" or "deviants". The SL'ers laugh at the Facebookers because they have no imagination, they don't "get it".

I'd say, loosen up. Accept people for who and what they portray themselves as. Enjoy the wonderful zaniness of millions of imaginations set free.

Except for one thing...that isn't a Facebooker's goal. Your goal (which you achieved, and congratulations!) is to find a Special Someone in SL, and then share your life (real and second, both) with them. If that's your goal, Facebook itself, or eHarmony, is a better bet...but SL can work too. But you're right, at some point you have to get past the SL avatar and meet the driver.

For those who are here with that sort of thing in mind, I'll give you a time-saving tip: Look at people's Profiles. If their First Life tab says, "don't ask", then chances are that this person is not the droid you're looking for. Move along.

4) I like sex in rl but don't even want to think about it in sl.

To the OP:

A fix -

Actually, this is a known bug. Part of it was introduced with Windlight, because Windlight's rendering *really* washed out the colours inworld. That rosy #b31957 that you were looking at way back in those Good Ol' Days is now a pathetically pale #f8b8d3. You might try switching off atmospheric shaders, for a return to that pre-Windlight rosiness. Oh, and the second half of the bug came in with Havok4, which *completely* messed up the Kittens, Puppies and Fluffy Baby Bunnies setting. Hopefully, setting your login preferences to 'never' should fix that problem.

A quote -

"What l've seen in life, it takes a lot to hold my interest. I put myself in his stories. I play the parts. Each strumpet, each murderess. If I wasn't such a bad woman on the page, I'll hazard I couldn't be such a good woman in life." (Kate Winslet, playing Madeleine LeClerc, in 'Quills' - the story of the greatest deviant there ever was: the Marquis de Sade.)

And a question -

If you hate it so much, then why have you stayed inworld for so long after the ONE thing you're thankful for quit in disgust? You say you're "borderline ready to quit" ... but not quite yet? Still holding out in hopes of finding the perfect Second Life for you?

Read the banner at the top of the main SL page again. It says: "Your World, Your Imagination". Life's what you make it, and so is Second Life.
