Lying, hm? Well, I have heard different definitions when it comes to SL. I had one person tell me that someone they met was lying because they were playing a male avatar and were in RL female. I asked whether that other person had ever said they were male in RL and they said "no, but just playing someone different from your RL self is lying!" Each to their own, I guess. There are some who want to come to SL to be different from who they are in RL - I don't think that makes them a deviant, automatically, but that's just me and my value system. I don't talk about my RL to anyone in-world who I don't know in RL too. If, in your eyes, that makes me a liar and/or a deviant, please remove me from your friends list.

No offense to the good ones, but I think that if SL inworld would be only accessible for paying members, we would have a lot less troublemakers.

Not usually one for keeping on topic, but ok- and your point is? Deviants come in all shapes, sizes and degrees of monetary involvement. Besides- to contribute to the derailment- if you didn't try it for free how many do you think would toss in the bux from the get-go? You need time to discover your inner deviance.

There is good as well as bad, both in RL and in SL.
I have met people who lied to me, people who hurt me. I lost my RL heart to a man I met in SL who then proceeded to shred my heart.
But I have also met people who have helped me in every way they can - given me things when I was new, patiently explained to me about SL. I have met people who listened when I needed to talk about the bad apples I have met people who extended genuine friendship to me, a person they only new in a virtual world.
There is a story about a girl tasked with removing the weeds from the gardens. She labored on this task for hours. When she was done, the gardener asked her how the flowers were faring. She responded that she did not know, because she had been looking only for weeds.
SL gives us a chance to be as we would like to be. We can all be beautiful. We can even fly and instantly teleport to anywhere! It is a magical land. The temptation to not reveal our RL selves, warts and all, is very strong.

Amara is really only 6'10" and the blonde is from a bottle. Her normal hair color is the same as the leopard skin all over. ALL over

From: Preclear Sorbet No offense to the good ones, but I think that if SL inworld would be only accessible for paying members, we would have a lot less troublemakers. Uh, have we established deviants=troublemakers? This would make an interesting topic at the local biker bar, not that I am willing to go and raise it. Seriously, I have no reason to believe that, unless you separate the actions of paid avs from their alts. What, because we paid money, we have something to protect? Mostly, we reflect on learning over 12 months or so that we probably could have had as much fun with a free account and saved a lot of money and it puts us in a bad mood and we want to raise a little hell to let off steam and then we go find a newbie...

imogen I think it follows the IT maxim that life would be much better if we simply got rid of all those pesky end-users. I know what I would do if I were dictator for life, but then there would be no one left to rule. A conundrum...

I happen to be very much in favor of returning to a pay-to-play model, with the addition of being able to create one, two or perhaps even three alts alongside.
No, I don't believe this would eliminate griefing. It would curtail it, however. Most of the griefing is done with a bazillion alts attached to throw-away email addresses. If they were attached to credit card info, or some other less disposable information, you'd see a drop in griefing simply because there would (eventually?) be fewer alts to throw away for the purpose.
