I admit it,I call you Lil cause I am a lazy typer.I shorten everyone's name, lol. But at least Lil is cute.:p
It is okay - I like the Lil abbreviation a lot and when people ask what to call me, I will tell them that Lil is fine.

I try to abbreviate longer avatar names if I think the shortened version sounds okay and if I'm pretty sure the other person won't mind -- although sometimes I might make that judgement based on someone else using the abbreviation, which might not really be a valid assumption.

I, too, love the clever firstname/lastname combos..!

given that I am usually texting people, I have a hard time with really long firstnames....my typing stinks; after typing about 5-6 letters in a row, it disnintegRates...and I wonder what the heck they were thinking when they chose that very very long name.

*I*, however, did not give any thought to voice when choosing my name. Don't think I even knew voice was an option. Having been to lots of live music or DJ-run events, where voice is used, and the poor host/DJ/ musicisian struggles to pronounce my name...guess I should have thought that one through a bit more :D

And don't forget the idiots that put use an "I" for an "l" just so they can get the name they want. Makes finding them in search freakin impossible.

I am very bad about giving nicknames. But my typing sucks, especially when we are in group chat and everything is flying fast.

I think I was the first person to use "Lil", for LittleMe. I got tired of typing it all out when we would dance. But she can correct me if I am wrong.

I'm pretty sure it was you that first called me Lil and I actually hadn't even thought of it before that, but I loved it - thank you. :)

Those of you who have names that AREN'T also your real names: Do you find you answer readily to your SL name? Mine seems such a part of me now like my real name is.

Uhoh....maybe that's a sign I spend way too much time in SL.

Actually, I tend to do the opposite - I spend a lot of work time signing things so have to stop and think when I send an IM in SL, not to sign using my real name! :) (this is for times when I send new tenants welcome notes, otherwise I don't bother putting my name as the flashin IM tab tells people who I am!)

I have a cleverly named alt, and yes, someone tried for the same name, couldn't get it, so they added an extra 'e' on the end... Now I'm constantly getting mistaken IMs from people trying to reach that person, but making the mistake of spelling the name right XD. I want to throttle them. lol

I suppose names say something about the owner, not sure what mine says though ;)

Not sure what mine says, either. Quiet Coffee Addict? :)

Actually, either one of you could likely help me.

So far my favorite Second Life name is "Sacred Legend" very strong name and the avatar to match! There was one name I had to laugh at "Dick Mayo" It was a funny name to find in use.

I forget how I came up with my avatars name, but it is I think a decent name.

Peace.

This is my RL name, but I do have a couple of nice alt names - 3toed Frog and 4times Nitely. I tried for a lower number number than 4, cos I can't keep that up, but they'd gone.

When I first signed up for SL I really had no idea what I was doing when I selected my avatars name. I also was just checking it out and had no intention of staying. I used the same name I use throughout the Internet. When I got in the game it was a goofy set of numbers and letters. After a few weeks I created an alt and here I am. I'd say go easy on those with names you find odd and don't be so judgmental.

Whenever I see another furry with "affle" at the end of thier first name, I almost throw up laughing, talk about unoriginal, poor Yiffy doesn't even get paid royalties :P

When I "meet people" with numbers at the end of thier name, sometimes I do think "Couldn't you be more original?", but maybe they were just trying to get thier RL first name. Whatever...these are just "dolls and action figures" lol.

One of the coolest people I ever met (only stayed in SL for about 2 months) was named asdf!

And wouldn't it be politically incorrect for Barbie to be submissive to Ken? Shouldn't Ken be the submissive one in this day and age?

Barbie was never the sub. Anyone who played with her knows that. Ken was merely a neutered accessory to her fabulous life :D

Talking about shortening names or nicknames... I keep my own short&sweet nickname in my profile. I'm a little obsessive about profiles and I appreciate when people read mine before chatting with me. It helps get some things out of the way before a conversation turns bad... fast. (^_^)

And if not... I always have the claws on standby. (^_^)y

Hah! I know your nickname. In one of my more humiliating mistakes (of which there have been THOUSANDS) when we met at the Hangout I went to read your profile, misclicked and ended up spanking you. Right click, left click...turns out it makes a difference.

I have to admit that when it comes to first names, I can be very prejudiced.

If your name is 'barbie', I wonder to myself, "Why haven't you learned that proper nouns are always capitalized and/or why haven't you learned how to use the shift key on your keyboard?"

If your name is 'Barbie117', I wonder to myself. "Couldn't you be a little more creative than that?"

If your name is 'ClothesLuvinBarbie', I wonder to myself, "Why you are so one dimensional?"

So is this just me? Or do others hold the same or similar prejudices when it comes to peoples first name choices.

And I'm not picking on the girls! Insert 'Ken' and I would be thinking the same exact thing.

i don't think you should judge people by their nicknames. i mean, Jethro makes me think of a very unintelligent hick from Tennesse who still drives a jalopy in the big city. so, did you spend your oil money right, and invest, or did you spend it all on a new pig pen in the back yard? not to be an ass on top of an ass, but i'd hate to be associated with stupidity and white trash just because i chose a one-dimensional name named after a tv character, but that's just me.

i wonder what impression "3Ring" brings. oh wait, i don't really care.
love,
Gilligan

I chose my first name because it is my major focus in Buddhist practice -- the cultivation of Maitri (Metta) -- loving kindness toward all sentient beings. It's the first of the four immeasurables in one great branch of Buddhism. The others are Karuna (compassionate wisdom), Mudita (altruistic joy), and Upekka (equanimity). I wish I had chosen a better sounding last name, but I just wanted to get started!

That said, when I made an alt, I spent more time thinking about the name, and chose a first and last name that work together and reflect a more fun-loving side of my personality.

And yes, I find I answer very readily to both SL names!

A cordial letter from LL

Dearest Wattledoodle McHoositspants:

It is with great regret that we inform you that we will be cancelling your account as of midnight tonight based on our new policy of not allowing people with stupid names to live. This policy came into effect following a commercial by IBM where our policy of allowing residents to own islands was ridiculed. We feel that in order to attract large corporate cash influxes, we need to ensure that our resident base is comprised of people of the highest mental capacity who display a great degree of professionalism and solemnity. Your name, quite simply put, implies that you are too stupid to live.

Please surrender your Lindens to someone with a normal name, like Frank or Sam. George is a nice name as well, as is Susan or Brenda. In keeping with our commitment to diversity (except with regards to morons like you) we also believe names like Javier and Ravinder are excellent models of the sort of citizenry we hope to retain.

We know that you are pretty stupid, but if you could please not try to hide from us. The last guy we had to kill, one Smellyfarts Gobbledysmack, hid under a park bench for three hours before barricading himself behind a desk in an adfarm and shooting everyone in sight. It took three days for the Linden SWAT Team to pry him out of there. Mustard gas didn't work because he had a gas mask and it turns out that our mustard gas canisters were Ordinal Malaprop TM Condiment Grenades. All they did was stain everything yellow and make the place smell like Coney Island.

At any rate, we apologize for the inconvenience. "Inconvenience" is a long word that people smarter than you use as a nice way to tell you that you are screwed. It's been nice having you as a residnet and we are sure that your meager IQ will fit in much better in another environment. Might we suggest CounterStrike:Source?

Love,

If you accidentally forgot to capitalize your first name. LL has been known to fix that on request... sometimes.

You could always try putting in a ticket for it. (Don't forget to send that suitcase with unmarked L$ to your nearest liaison too...)

When I first started Secondlife, I tried using the name Isabella, and I got so confused with it not being available, and part of me didn't realise or think to check it against every surname.
I then for some reason.. that seemed good at the time, add Rosa, to the end of it..

At the time I didn't really know what SL was, and how important, your name was, being the first thing people see, other than your avatar.

Part of me wishes i had created an easier name, for others to spell out, and so forth.. (hey people call me Izzy and Iz now..and the occasional Isa)

I can't count the number of times I have random IMs from people saying OHhhhhhh are you Italian?? and I have to say no, I just liked the name when I signed up.

So the preconception with my name, and obviously the first impression I give to many people, is that I am from Italy, or that I am Italian

Dear Isabeau Imako:

Your name isn't strange at all. In fact, it's sort of pretty. We like it. Unfortunately, as part of our secret conspiracy to ruin your SL experience, we can't let on to that fact. As a result, we are terminating all of your alts as soon as we transfer the majority of your inventory to the cornfield. Please report to the nearest Infohub for out-processing.

In addition to persecuting your alts, we have sent a memo to the servers requesting that they initiate Lag Procedure 428843-C every time you teleport in. Unfortunately, the servers don't speak English. They appear to speak in some sort of code made up entirely of ones and zeroes. Our researchers are baffled. However, as soon as we teach them English, you can expect to receive only the finest in mistreatment from them.

Please accept our heartfelt apologies. You are a lovely person and deserve none of this, but let's face it, we're bored. It's Friday; there's nothing to do, and if Jack Linden shows us one more goddamn Yo-Yo trick we're going to go postal. That isn't even entertaining when it's Tommy Smothers. Conspiring against you is all we have.

Sncerely,

Snidely Linden.
Minister of Secret Conspiracies.

Obviously I answer to Claire as it is my RL name, but I also answer to my alt's name aswell. I haven't seen it that often though.

This is too funny! lol

I made this name because I was banned for a day for playing a gesture in a welcome area of a man screaming an orgasm. Ok, I learned my lesson, said I was sorry, and have become a much better citizen.

When I signed up for SL, I didn't know the account name was the avatar name and I was hungry. I think one of the cool thing about a semi clever name is that people will IM out of the blue just to comment on the name.

Also people assume many things about a name and I don't think it is just related to having a play on words.
