This is a very authoritative statement; also, without underlying evidence. Do you have some? Are there stats on apparent av gender somewhere?

LL has never released any official statistics on the relationship between RL and SL gender. They do release monthly statistics on percentage of SL usage by RL gender; in March, about 42% of the hours spent in SL were by self-reported women. There is no way to be certain that the RL gender that people supply to LL is accurate, nor does that statistic identify the gender of their avatars.

There was a poll here a while back (when the General forum was still open) asking people about RL and SL gender; about 900 people answered. In round figures, 25% of SL women were played by RL men, and 10% of SL men were played by RL women. Those numbers can't be considered definitive, because there are at least two selection biases in effect: forum participants vs. non-participants, and people who chose to answer the poll vs. non-answerers. But it's the best data that I know about.

“You can have multiple avatars in ‘Second Life,’ but the overall average is 1.25 avatars per person.” The median age of users is 31, and the oldest users spend the most time in the world (over 80 hours per week for 10 percent of the residents). Women are 43 percent of the customers.

Perhaps we need a new poll .. or perhaps we don't LOL

The reason I say this is those figures seem to indicate a single gender swap. Perhaps I am wrong there. How about the many who have a main and alt of opposite genders? Did they answer for their mains or their alts?

I gather one of the reasons boys play girls is for more attention. There are others I know.
Inversely I gather one of the reason girls play boys is for less attention. There is something inherently sad with that.

Last night I think was the first evening I logged in as my female alt only .. and no, it wasn't for cybering!!

Worried? ... only by the amount of lindens she's spending!!

While completely unscientific observation ...

A fair number of women I know have boyfriends who only log on for a couple hours a night to visit with them. The women Play perhaps 6-8 hours a day them men 2 or so.

They then go "off to play WOW" when things are going smoothly with the dating deal

Or go of to "A lot fo RL stuff" when things are less smooth.

My instinct is the Guys go off to play WOW in both cases (or other online things) but the "RL stuff" definitely goes up when WOW resentment increases.

A handful of the ladies decide to start playing WOW with them. Of course this leads to a lot of "RL stuff" often

I think is a few reasons for all this. One is theres never a perfect compatability for how much togetherness a couple can stand. And Two a lot of people (in this example the boyfreinds) like to do more than socialize online, Second Life is a pretty social platform.

And sort of three - some people dont realize they want more togetherness than their partner can take. While others dont realize they arent supplying near enough. But this happens in Real Life as well.

I'll start by saying that I've only been playing for a week, so I'm certainly still very clueless about a lot of things in Second Life. Take this with a grain of salt.

That being said... has anyone noticed that 95% of all clothes, animations and accessories seem to be targeted towards female avatars? I could pick any mall at random, and almost every single shop therein will be selling female clothes, female poses, female hair styles, and so on. I spent about half an hour last night just searching for a store that sold shirts for males, and the closest I found was a bunch of identical t-shirts with different logos on the front.

I spent even longer looking for an animation to replace the awkward-looking walk that my character has, and I never actually found anything. The popular freebie locations (like the Free Dove) have replacement walks for females, but not for males. The closest I came was a box that read, "Animation override for females, will work for males but you'll have to set it up yourself." Now, money isn't an issue (I'm not just looking for freebies), but even at the expensive shops, I couldn't find a simple walk animation.

As I said, I'm still very inexperienced. Could anybody recommend a shop or location that sells a decent range of male clothes and/or animations? These faded jeans are getting a little boring. :)

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

The poll only let you choose from one of four options. There were no choices for people who go both ways; if you DID try to have such choices, you'd have to have things like "man who plays a woman occasionaly", "man who plays a woman half the time", and so forth. And then there are the RL genderqueers who don't identify as either man or woman; no choices for them either.

I'm guessing that most people answered for what they consider their "primary" avatar, whatever that means to them. (So far as I recall, the poll didn't specify how you were supposed to answer the question.) That's certainly how I answered the question, though I do have a male alt that I use occasionally. Putting on a body of the other gender is enlightening; it really does change the way people react to you. So is putting on a body of the same gender that is radically different from the one you normally wear.
