From: Colette Meiji I think the majority of clothes in SL are pretty much tight though.
This is largely the result of the way clothes work from LL . I think a lot of people - men and women both would clothes that looked more realisitc with reguards to how they fit on the Avatar. Yes, technically we are all walking around with our clothes painted onto our skin! There are a few tricks to simulate looser clothing but they're hard to do for tops, I think.. (Still remembers the time she needed a suit jacket so bought a guy's tuxedo.. what I didn't realise was, it used the skirt layer for the "tails" of the jacket (skirt is the only type of non-prim clothing that isn't just textured onto your avatar). So as soon as I put the jacket on, my actual skirt came off... )

Just before the ceremony I had a similair problem with a complicated dress which i was trying to rerezz a portion of. My date's very urgent Ims alerted me to the problem. It was so laggy I hadnt noticed .. lol

From: Brenda Connolly And every one of you guys complaining about SL fashion probably live in T shirts and sweats in RL...lol Well, count me out of that stereotype. It's a bad bad day when my suit costs less than that week's mortgage... I do think the gender bias is a lot sharper and nastier than comments here really address: itseems richly ironic that the most-often cited reason for rejecting a male av in SL is their lack of imagination in dress or skin, when in fact there simply aren't that many male skins (etc) to go around - kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy. The fact that quite a large proportion of the "girls" doing the criticising are guys-playing-as-girls going for that schadenfreude high-score, only adds to the weirdness. I think the gender divide thing has gone WAY past the "ain't it peculiar" stage and is already on a par with israelis feeling they are legitimized in beating up on the locals cause of what happened to their grand-pappy on a whole different continent: but of course, the gender thing is comparable with that can of worms precisely because it doesn't have a resolution, and it does fire up everyone's hot buttons and produce lots of heated (and presumptuous) exchanges. I guess those of us who identify strongly with our avs and hence play as men, are just going to have to accept that most of our fellow men would sooner run naked from Baghdad to Tikrit, than appear on SL as something approximating to "themselves". For them the avatar is a separate person whose adventures they control - and they choose to undertake those adventures as girls.

From: Ike Fairweather The majority of the population when it comes to consumers are women. As most know, women do the most shopping. But you are correct. I plan on openning a men's store in my rental shop area. Just trying to get these templates finalized. This is a very authoritative statement; also, without underlying evidence. Do you have some? Are there stats on apparent av gender somewhere?

From: Thunder Starbrook I use an AO called 'superfly' not sure where i got it from but looks great standing walking and flying. That can be found at Animation Warehouse along with a few other animators that make AO's for men.

Isn't Secondlife prettymuch just playing with digital Barbies and Kendolls anyways?
Looking at it in this manner and possibly going through either you're own or perhaps you're childs toybox will put you on to the fact that the Mattel company makes about 25 female barbie outfits to every oh lets say..One rather plain outfit for our erstwhile Kendoll. So, poor ken gets stuck with the same slacks, shirt and sometimes cheesy jacket again and again while Our lovely Barbie swiftly becomes lost in her own clothing, cars, dreamhouses ad naseum..
Now I know. Some of you boys out there will be up in arms saying. It's Not playing with dolls! I am making huge robots! I am buying and selling land! I have guns!.. Yeah..My brother used to say that too when he would infect my precious playland fantasyworld with his filthy dirty grubby paws..But..I would remind him, as I am reminding you..You're still just playing with dolls.

All my barbies would eventually end up naked, with tangled hair and clothes misplaced somehwere in the toybox. Thats not like Second Life! Wait .. ohh .. Nevermind.

From: bilbo99 Emu Shall be at the door first thing Wednesday morning Johan! ...<rummages in cupboard for sleeping bag and blankets> Actually, you'd probably be better off staking out Keiki's place/suggestion. I have a stall in the Animation Warehouse, and I'll probably put my AO there too. You'll get a selection there, as opposed to just my one AO. Besides, sometimes it rains at Lake Gnoma, and Gypsy hasn't released his tent yet.

Well, I am female but I play in a band with 2 guys and we play in SL, so we've had to go through this process. We have found a lot of great places for guys. I'm amazed no one has mentioned The Made Man yet. Tons of nice clothes for guys, as well as skins etc. It's probably the biggest men's store in SL. As far as AO, I have the female AO from Vista which is really great, and they have a male version also. Simply Britnee has loads of great male hair (as well as female - I got my favorite hair from there and I'm hard to please with hair). Natural Skins has a load of male skins with different facial hair styles, etc. Will post here if we find more! But definitely check those places. Oh, and YS for great men's shoes.

One place I go to find men's shops is the ManHunt Mall, at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Phyllira/154/25/119There are a huge number of shops here, mostly clothing but also skins, tatoos, furnishings, accessories. A fair number cater to the gay community, but most are impartial. (But don't go if you're offended by pictures of male nudity, as there are shops selling artwork there.) This mall is incredibly slow, probably because of a huge number of textures. So I'll typically fly around, make notes or get landmarks for the stores of interest, and then go to the main stores to actually shop. This mall is just a place I go to get leads. I also second the suggestion of second-man.com.

Ditto to prevous posts. A man's entire [RL] wardrobe can likely fit in a single suitcase, or at most a suitcase and duffel bag. Women need mulitple steamer trunks, depending on the number of shoes. OT: If anyone ever invents color-changing shoes in RL, they will make money hand over fist. Guys need just a pair a jeans, a couple tshirts, and a pair or two (at most) of shoes and be happy. That said, I concur about Blaze and MIA. Blaze suits look very nice and they have nice casual wear for men too. MIA is a men-only store, I believe, so it should have a good selection.

Since my (female) avatar tends to wear mostly men's clothing, I'm pretty familiar with this market and although we joke about SL being a girl's world, there are plenty of good designers making clothing for men. My overstuffed inventory is proof of that.
There is MORE clothing for women, no question, but there is still plenty enough for men from MIA to Blaze, The Made Man, Itan Kishi, and SF Designers, just to name a few. The fantasy clothing alone could bankrupt my account.

Once, I had occasion to see Elizabeth Taylor's entourage for a three-day trip to Athens to pick up some sort of award, back when Liz Taylor was still a sex-symbol name to conjure with. It was six panel trucks and SUVs, plus sedans for the people, plus security! (I happened to be there on a separate matter for the same three days; carried one (1) medium suitcase, got along jes' fine.) I hope LL servers are big enough when the day comes when all the ladies fulfill their fantasies in SL the way ol' Liz did in RL.

I've said it before about designers both SL, and RL; Male is not the favored medium for the creative mind. the social pressures upon women to stand out, to have variety in appearance have always existed in RL, and of course they have translated into SL as well. Be truthful guys, in RL do you own more than three pairs of shoes? i don't think so, Women of my aquantance own a Dozen or more pairs. That's just shoes, the rest of the ensamble has to match.
SL is in many ways a reflection of RL. In terms of fashion, it most definately is.
Angel.

From: Angelique LaFollette Be truthful guys, in RL do you own more than three pairs of shoes? Angel. Um, yes, I have 1 pair of sneakers,1 pair of steelcap workboots, 1 pair of steelcapped gumboots, 1 pair of black shoes, 3 pairs or thongs (national Australian costume flip flop sandal variety) and 1 pair of ugg boots (they are winter thongs). I didn't count one pair of sneakers, I have decided to commit to the rubbish bin as they were brought back in the late 90's some time and are decaying event though the soles have done very few miles. Hmm and the only ones I wear without being forced to are the workboots, thongs & ugg boots

I can't even begin to count my shoes and clothes. And it's true, shops for men are totally outnumbered by those for us girls. But guys...do understand that we have special needs, if we can't shop at least a few times per day you will have cranky and potentially dangerous gf's/wives. So for your own safety, give us money and send us shopping.... Mandy C

Mandy C Hmm my female alt gets hassled for changing looks sometimes over hours including hair & skins, just to really confuse everyone. My male alt gets prodded to change, try something new.......... My robot alt has no such problems other than some peoples reluctance to rent land from a Darlek

From: Amy Faddoul You're still just playing with dolls. Actually, "dolls" are for girls and "action figures" are for boys. Back in the day when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and I was but a twinkle in my daddy's eye, boys played with dolls going by the name "G.I. Joe". I think the only time the Barbie world would intersect with the G.I. Joe world was when Joe went home on leave. You think poor erstwhile Ken had a limited wardrobe? Poor G.I. Joe had just one set of fatigues. I can see how the "playing with dolls" analogy would be appropriate for SL. Both are using inanimate humanoid objects (furries not withstanding) to play out our dreams and imaginations.

Doll: n. a puppet; a toy-baby as a child's plaything; (Colloq.) a pretty but insipid, rather brainless girl. Puppet: n. a small figure with jointed limbs manipulated by wires; a marionette, a person whose actions are completely controlled by another. (Collins English Dictionary) Yes ... I think I prefer the thought of playing with puppets .. manipulated by wires .. I love it .. do you think they knew of the WWW when they wrote that?
