Yeah, that would be highly awkward to clean, I think. What happens to the sterling silver patina?

I'm not sure why 3Ring Binder is a particularly "Snow Crash" kind of name. The only example I can think of a name in Snow Crash that used that form was "Da5id", and it was a red flag to anyone who read it that Stephenson wasn't as plugged in to the online or "hacker underground" community as he thought... because everyone who WAS read that as "Dasid", not "David". There's nothing funny or clever about that contrived an alphanumeric pun.
Now, if it was Da55yd, that would be amufing.

I don't usually get upset about stuff on the forums, except sometimes I get annoyed at myself for my tendency to rant, which I don't want to direct at anyone on a personal level. I enjoy some good sh*t-stirring but I don't think it's fun to hurt others*.

I'm not that well known in the forums because I tend to lurk in the corners reading the posts. Some of the posts I have made were defend someone I perceived as being picked upon. So yes, you could say I'm sensitive when I see an injustice being carried out. Usually though, my personal level of sensitivity correlates to whatever good or bad mood I'm having in my First Life. I suspect that's true of most people. Once I did get offended by someone here (whose first name starts with a "P" and ends with a "dipity" . It was in an epic thread bashing a person who was conducting a survey. "P" called me a "theatre wannabe" which temporarily insulted me. After all, I was merely trying to defend another. I had assumed that "P" must have looked at my profile in order to respond as he did. Then I wondered "what really does he know about me?" He certainly didn't have my First Life resume. This person's lack of facts about me couldn't possibly insult me. Also that thread was my first experience with "P". Since then, I think the forums are more entertaining in part because of his presence here (and, of course, the presence of many other of the regulars). Anyway, my point is this: continue to have fun, poke at people as long as it's not really malicious, give help where it's needed, and defend the underdog. And if you get insulted, brush it off. We are each in control of our own hurt feelings. (learned the hard way)

Now, if it was Da55yd, that would be amufing. 3Ring as a name is much more reminiscent of 3Jane, the third clone of Jane Tessier~Ashpool who runs their orbital, cyberspace and AI empire of the same name: Tessier~Ashpool S.A. Though 3Ring is quite a bit different in character than 3Jane. Most fortunately, in fact. Of course, there's the more readily understood office supply analogy... (as an aside ~ you logged out too fast last night while I was drowning in IM's ~ 3ring, I'm still without any waterfront for you ... but give me time, people default quite regularly)

It depends on the remark, and the remarker.
If someone has misunderstood me, or I've otherwise upset someone, I can get very upset about it.
If it's someone spreading a flat-out lie about me or something I've said, I go nuclear.
If it's just someone being snarky, meh...that's the forums for you.
/me waves to Pep.

My personality has always been a bit overly-sensitive in general and I am now on disability for an illness that exacerbates that even more.
For a long time I would not post on these forums for fear of the smallest thing I said being ripped apart. Then I decided to take the "Do they pay your bills" approach and begin posting. I really haven't been ripped apart, except by one person who may have misunderstood what I meant in my post. That surprised and hurt me so that I didn't read the forums for quite awhile.
I go through periods where I am "stronger" than others. In the not-so-strong periods I try to not come onto the forums.
To those who have the type of personalities that whatever someone says to or about them it doesn't hurt...I envy you...somewhat. For those of us who are more sensitive, I believe it shows a caring side of us.

For those of us who are more sensitive, I believe it shows a caring side of us. I'm sorry, Czari, for the illness you suffer. I've missed you during the times you've been absent. I must offer a little refinement on your statement, though. Perceiving strong people as uniformly uncaring is a widespread fallacy that hurts every time I hear it. Similarly, seeing people who have thin skins as necessarily sensitive towards OTHERS is equally fallacious, in the main. I'm quite sure it is true of you, but it is not universally true. I've known many people with thick skins who also showed breathtaking intuition and caring about others. This includes a couple of social workers with whom I've dealt - really, they all need thick skins if they intend to stay in the business for more than a couple of years. They wouldn't attempt to stay in the business if they didn't care - it certainly offers no path to wealth. I've also known (and been related to!) self-absorbed delicate flowers whose sensitivity is completely taken up by protecting themselves. They REQUIRE care, they do not give it. Takes all kinds, no?

Okay let's stop all snipping. In real in a creative format this is all too common for me and we should all just retire to a different part of the building and get some air. Pep - some people DO have a heightened sensitivity, It's not a crime and they also need to be respected. YOU (or ME) might not agree with them but so be it. But killing them softly with words isnt a great idea. I know deep down you are decent and mean well and being snappy and vicious just doesnt suit you. You'd be a lot more fun if you were more like you were a few weeks ago. If anything, forums magnifies our feelings. I have had a rough day and I am sure most people have. This is a place we can be close to each other and trust one another. We can still be outrageous but lets just accept some people (like me) have feelings (like YOU). Let's just be nice to each other. All of us.

From: Nika Talaj I'm sorry, Czari, for the illness you suffer. I've missed you during the times you've been absent. Thank you for that, Nika. It really made my day, and just goes to show that one never knows those who do care. From: Nika Talaj I must offer a little refinement on your statement, though. Perceiving strong people as uniformly uncaring is a widespread fallacy that hurts every time I hear it. Similarly, seeing people who have thin skins as necessarily sensitive towards OTHERS is equally fallacious, in the main. From: Nika Talaj I've known many people with thick skins who also showed breathtaking intuition and caring about others. This includes a couple of social workers with whom I've dealt - really, they all need thick skins if they intend to stay in the business for more than a couple of years. They wouldn't attempt to stay in the business if they didn't care - it certainly offers no path to wealth. I'm not in one of my better thought processing days, but I apologize for implying the above as I agree with you totally. Interestingly, I have a Masters in Mental Health Counseling and worked for four years with Hospice. I often had people say "I could *never* do that work, I'm too sensitive." That used to hurt as well because (1) it was implying that I was some uncaring roboton and (2) a misunderstanding about sensitivity being a huge requirement to be successful in the profession. The interesting thing was that I could attend deaths, help terminally ill people with whatever their last issues were, help children understand what was happening when the funeral home came to take their parent from the home and I would seem like a "strong" person. It is some kind of a "divide" for want of a better word that allowed me to do my job in a professional manner. The sensitive nature in me allowed me to sit and listen and empathize with my patients and their families, but not fall apart; to be "strong" for them. But then I can go to pieces watching a Hallmark card commercial. I hope I haven't muddied the waters even more...but I wanted to clarify agreement with you on the issue you voiced, Nika. And once again, thank you.
