/me is sure that in the immortal words of The News of the World, Daniel will "make his excuses . . . Pep ( . . . and leave".) Er, Scylla, Pep... A tour was all that was being offered, and I'm sure all that is required, regardless. Oh and a makeover and an SL Q & A. Now go ahead. Make that dirty too. Lol _____________________

Some quick googling will confirm that I write for the New York Times Magazine; you'll also find reviews of my books. Would love to have your help, Daniel Bergner bergner23@aol.com Daniel Bergner has a gmail address on his web site. _____________________

I nominate Jig and Desmond for a balanced perspective ![]() Getting my perspective on this topic would be about as culturally relevant as Al Gore backstage at an AC / DC concert. Jig on the other hand would be wise to write her own book. I offer this cliche' but too frequently true expression: "happy people don't have livejournals" (referring to a popular blogging tool) ~ this also applies to the grid here. You'll find most everyone here has some itch to scratch; be it mundane or pathetic or charitable or academic. The common thread is a desire to be heard by others, hence the overwhelming response to you. The ones who don't have this desire are off happily living their contented lives as I write this. And quite offline. Sign up under a different name, travel around a bit and the desires of people will hungrily seek you out like a school of starved fish, unmistakable in their honesty. Very few log onto the internet to please *other* people for a few hours... Good luck, and I pray never to meet you ![]() laughs Ah, and I recommend this, it will help a great deal: http://www.cinemax.com/molotov-alva/ _____________________

Oh, and a final chapter that makes passing mention of furries, Gor and other roleplay environments, child avatars, non-human avatars, women using male alts, ... hinting that an adequate treatment of the subject would run to several volumes. . Seven, you should be writing this book, not Daniel! Please include lots of references to shoes. ![]() _____________________

Get yourself a female Alt and get in world. Don't tell anyone what you are researching - just get involved. Take your time. Don't jump to conclusions. Above all else, enjoy yourself and learn as much as can. _____________________

To everyone willing to help, Thank you. First, Clarissa, you weren't stood up. Far from it. Like I just said, I've been trying to send you a message but getting blocked.... You're all being extremely generous with offers of tours, so I should explain the book I'm working on in more detail. But before I start, I should say what I fear, that lots of nuance gets lost in this form of communication, so I worry things will get distorted or misunderstood. We're talking about romance and sex, probably the most complicated things on the planet; misunderstanding is almost guaranteed. But here goes: The book I'm working on is about female desire. It grew out of an NYT Magazine story I wrote back in January. That article dealt with a lot of science; my books, by contrast, are about people. The book will include science, but human stories are by far more important to me as a writer. I have this idea (not original, I know) that women are exploring their romantic/passionate/erotic selves in interesting ways through Second Life. Someone joked about boring me with "geriatric" stories -- you don't have to worry about boring me in any way. I'm interested in people; people are not boring. There was also mention of touring me through some of the kinkier areas -- that would be great. But I want to be clear that I'm interested in the entire range of ways that women's desire is being explored through SL, "normal," adventurous, etc. Okay, with that, I'll leave my education up to you. (And Clarissa, you may have written back while I've been typing this message; anyway, I hope you will.) Thank you all again, Daniel I confess to not being familiar with the writing style of the NYT Magazine, and I have not read your books, but why the lack of paragraphs? _____________________

... I should probably add one more thing: an answer to the inevitable question, What makes me think that I, as a man, can write about female desire? It's an excellent question, and I don't have a satisfactory answer. I think that I can ask good questions and listen well and represent women's voices powerfully on the page. I know that the article I refered to, in the NYTM back in January, was read by more people than any article in the magazine's history -- it seems to have stirred a lot of discussion. And I know that my editors, both at the magazine and at my book publisher, are women, and they have faith in this project... Okay, enough of my talking; looking forward to getting educated by you... I would be willing to show you this world and you could bring as many questions as you like.. I think in world would be much better than emails though..Seeing for yourself and feeling how this world works is always best.. You could ask all you wanted and see the places that may pop up in your questions.. You would get a better perspective this way..You may even get hooked on it lol ![]() _____________________

Well, at least I am glad that we have established with reasonable certainty the veracity of the OP's claims. It does, of course, have significant bearing on his trustworthiness.
When it seemed he may be an imposter his trustworthiness was in question. Now that we know he is indeed a highly credentialed journalist and staff member of the NYT the doubt is removed. His level of trustworthiness is firmly established at zero. _____________________

Just immerse yourself, and have your own romance. If you need different perspectives....use 3 or 4 different avs with different personalities. If you need to feel it from a woman's point of view....be a woman. Total immersion. You do that....and have some torrid, sizzling, intense love affairs that will blow your mind....and you'll have more material than you know what to do with, and at a depth that you won't get from someone relaying the info to you. And in SL you can do that all within a week or two. Just tell your wife it's research....about 75,000 other guys are getting away with that just fine. |

"the book is not written in clinical krafft-ebingese, but neither is it leering or salacious. the portraits are serious and even sympathetic, and their cumulative effect is to make readers realize that they understand a lot less about sex than they thought...'i decided i was going to go inside eros, inside our sexual selves,' bergner explained." Pep (Hands up who here understands a lot less about sex than they thought? ![]() PS What's the point if it is neither leering nor salacious? Hey, Pep, YOU read my kinda books! More of the Lear and lotsa salacious! Jiggy. _____________________

Hi Clarissa, Thank you. I'm trying to send you a message but am getting a reply saying something like your message storage is full.... She asked you to IM her in world. Because of the antique forum software Second Life, an IM here does not go into her account inside the Second Life virtual world. To contact her, you need to log on, and then look her up in Search/People, then hit the IM button. Actually--there is a fairly steep learning curve for SL if you are not already familar with it. You are welcome to stop by NCI/New Citizens Incorporated for some help. _____________________
