No, this is what I expect: It will profile four women.

1. is lonely and never seems to hook up with the right guy, and this echoes her experience in RL.

2. is an experimenter, tries all sorts of things that she would never do in real life. in real life she has a boring , rather conservative job

3. a very stable, well adjusted woman who met her husband in SL, and they both use it as part of their relationship/love life/sex life

4. a wild card. maybe a woman who is into something dark that I can't imagine and the author has a difficult time writing about it and keeping it on a level of public consumption

.

So three real women and one too fantastical for anyone to believe in?

Pep (#3 obviously)

What makes me think that I, as a man, can write about female desire? ...
Well, if this causes you concern, remember that in SL *YOU* can be female. I do happen to have an acceptable trans skin, and of course shapes and clothes you could get by in. We'd have to get you hair, but that's easy.

/me is hoping that this is not going to result in another portrayal of this place that assumes that "SL" stands for "Sex Life" . . .

Daniel, Second Life is an AWFULLY big place, and there's an enormous amount out there that has nothing to do with online relationships or sex. There's art, literature, music; there are historical reconstructions, and there is political and social activism.

While I appreciate that your main focus is going to be upon the cybersex and relationships angle, I do hope that you are going to experience enough of the REST of SL to place this all within a larger context.

Yes, I really do know this. And in my books, humanity, in all its complexity, is the focus. You can see that in my last book, which dealt lots with the erotic -- but also lots with art. I'm writing here about life, not just cybersex. This is hard to explain in these short messages.....

Oh, and a final chapter that makes passing mention of furries, Gor and other roleplay environments, child avatars, non-human avatars, women using male alts, ...

hinting that an adequate treatment of the subject would run to several volumes.

.

You don't get it do you, Seven? This is about the women at the keyboard and *their* desires . . .

I guess I don't get it. My cartoon character is me. She wears nice clothes because *I* want them, and has a pretty house because *I* want it.

Fair enough, Daniel. I am reassured, and look forward to reading what you come up with.

Have fun on your tour (but not TOO much fun . . . although, why not, after all?) and may Erato smile down upon your endeavours, etc. etc. etc. . . . :)

Interesting...... wonder how I missed this one.....

I wont be able to add anything to the fodder here, as I don't participate in any sort of romantic or sexual anything in SL. It's just not on my agenda. I reserve the really good stuff for my RL. ;)

But what strikes me......is time and again...and again...and again....all I ever read about is the relationship between the human being and the web/virtuality as it relates to our sexuality. *yawn* it's getting tiresome, really. There's so so so much more going on with-in the virtual framework then people's primal fantasies being played out. Yeah, it's there, and it's fascinating.......for a while. Then it just gets old.

You want to discuss female sexuality 'in general'.....ok. I'm down with that. Perhaps, I'm one of the exceptions to the rule. Cyber simply doesn't cut it for me. I've certainly witnessed enough.....morbid curiosity kept me busy exploring the seedier side of SL for the first few months. But it always struck me more on a creative level.....like "wow, look what people are creating in here....plants that f*** ya!" LOL Then it became mundane....I'm involved more for the creative venue.....the exploration of asthetics in cyber space. And I have another agenda...more personal....more important....and more uniquely served via this amazing virtual community.

*sigh* but alas you'r focused on sex and relationships..... :p have at it bro.....I'll keep an eye out for your end result.

Well, I'm not really sure if SL is really "another country" or all that big, in comparison to, say, Pakistan or even Texas or even Austin. Its just there aren't that many guide books and places keep changing every week. Yes, there's millions who have registered ONCE, but the people who are in world several times a month come to around half a million. Throw in time zone differences and the international reach of SL you might say there's about 200,000 who could potentially rub elbows with each other at any given time during their normal waking/non-working hours.

So what do we have here? You need a moderate to high end computer, and given SL's steep learning curve most people will have some basic smarts and combination of either stubborness or determination or desperation to get past the learning curve. You also need to be the kind of person who has the leisure time to be inworld, and who choses to pursue that leisure time online as opposed to out in the world, and values that time over other potential channels.

The pie is getting sliced pretty thin...

The easy answer is to say "geek culture" but that's probably only half at most. There's also a fair number of disabled, and hobbyist types like stay at home moms or home office types who need the social outlet but can't escape the cocoon they're in at home because they're tied to one location for X number of hours per day. I'd say about 10% are artistic types who like the ability to "create magic", and others like the different kind of music they can be exposed to. Another 15-20% (guesstimate only) are routinely tied to a virtual culture, such as furries or tinies or steampunk or rpgs. So there's your base, and of course people will come up behind me and say "you're dead wrong" but that's to be expected, we do only see what we choose to see.

The woman to male ratio isn't 50/50, but there's enough of a balance so people aren't saying "how can we attract more women" to Second Life?"

Get in touch with the guy who runs the "New World Notes" blog, he can point you in some well-informed directions concerning what the terrain is like. He used to work in-house before Linden Lab cut him loose a couple years ago, but still stays very current and doesn't seem to have any bias one way or the other.

I know it doesn't answer your question directly, but scut-level research is always necessary...and you can contact me inworld and I can point to some other things on the fringy side.

Hey Daniel .. I'd recommend that you pick up this book called, Coming of Age in Second Life : An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human by Tom Boellstorff. You can get a limited preview here: http://books.google.com/books?id=QmFQK7y6r_8C&lpg=PP1&dq=coming%20of%20age%20in%20second%20life&pg=PP1

It's a book I'd highly recommend that you read as part of your research for your work. Chapter Six specifically address issues of intimacy, sexuality and relationships http://books.google.com/books?id=QmFQK7y6r_8C&lpg=PP1&dq=coming%20of%20age%20in%20second%20life&pg=PA151

Good luck and let us know if and when you've published something. It's a topic that I'm sure will garner a lot of interest in the community.
