Since you guys were thinking monumental, I thought about LF's archway in Grig. That is something that you will remember a sim by. And if there is enough Linden land we wouldnt have to put in exactly on the hub, but the land in front of Matina's in Sistiana and Honey Lily's in Barcola. Then make a nice park of the hub.
Right now there is the Lindex, Gift Kiosk, Hippo, Build a hub info, Infonet, Landing pad, Newspaper stand, About Land display, and 3 sets of table/chairs. You can barely move...

Hi folks.
Just got a message from Jesse... seems he's looking over Infohub proposals already. We should really get in gear and get a finalized proposal to him ASAP.

On my plaza, right next to the hub, about 50m up in the air is a little hub proposal of mine. I used some of LF's examples in this one. The photo is facing Miramare. Grignano would be behind me. I'm not talking these textures or plants necessarily. These are just to give an idea of what would be where.
Lindex, Newspaper giver, Infonet and About Land are all included.

A couple of people had mentioned that it would be nice if it matched my plaza that Jauani Wu built, so here is an example of that. This one is about 65m in the air above the plaza.

This monumental idea appealed to me, so I flew around LF's arch to guage its span. Unfortunately the land isn't big enough for it. It would completely span the site we have to work with. Flying back to the infohub area I tried rezzing an arch with a 30 meter span and 20 meter height. That fits comfortably in the location you describe, Caroline, but I don't think it works with those stores. The stores sit like individual objects placed on the ground, and the arch looked like another item somebody had placed there. Trees would be better. They'd look like they belonged, particularly near the water, and could help to integrate the stores with the site. You can see a copy of the arch where Tiger's apartment building used to be. (If you land, and look up at the curve you'll recognise it as a traditional curve from the 1800s. I drew it freehand, and refined it on paper, then transcribed the centerpoints and rotations of the blocks.) Your demo builds are helpful, and I agree with echoing some design aspects of Jauani's plazas to integrate the new work with the surrounding area. Would it be possible to retexture those existing plazas using the Linden textures? Salazar Jack made a convincing argument for using those. (Hope we can avoid the pink road-edge brick though.) From: Alondria LeFay I also think we should have some form of inner-city event sign/board - something to announce events, new releases, etc. within the city. Perhaps we could be a sanctuary for events that go beyond the normal junk in the listing.
Yes, I agree with the thinking behind this.

The hub example can be retextured to anything. I will be keeping the plazas in the same texture because I really like them. But yes, the hub should be default Linden textures as Salazar said.
p.s. There is a new infonet (I set a copy up on the plaza looking example) It is smaller and looks a lot like the Lindex thing. I have seen it a hub or two, but mostly over in the Linden Village. Its much nicer and smaller.

Miramare InfoHub Construction Area - Now Online
01-14-2006 12:15
I had temporarily disabled the Grignano parcel where I had set up a building area that all the City Slickers could use to hash out thier InfoHub ideas at, and forgot to reset it. It is available again. Also, if we are indeed able to use more of the adjoining Linden Land for the hub I am offering the entire region of Phobos for us to play around in. One of my land groups own most of Phobos and the large parcel there now has autoreturn turned off. Please feel free to use that area to build out your ideas at full size. I will be inworld most of today workinig on my ideas for the Infohub and at one of the three sites I have set up to flesh things out: Grignano 91, 248, 27Cowell 240, 95, 27Phobos 128, 128, 50

I saw Sal's hub today and I like it. Clean and simple. There is enough stuff at the hub that the Linden's leave behind that we don't need to add much. He had it at Grignano

Hey All: I have transferred the Infohub mockup I have in Grignano to the Phobos region so we can build out the rest of the area at full size easily. Here is a photo of what it looks like so far: Lordfly is going to be constructing a pedestrian walkover bridge to span the trolley roadway. He says Jesse Linden has been poking us for our hub so it sounds like we need to get something finished soon. I've used the same brick texture the Lindens have used under the bridges and roads. I'm thinking it might be nice to have some displays along the walkways to showcase some of Nova Albion's history... photos and notecards detailing Magellan Linden's discovery and the Lindens building the city's infrastructrue. Let's get some looks going for those. All the objects are set to modify for the group so folks can tweak. Please give it a look and post your feedback here.

I flew out to Phobos, and saw this last night. I sure hope we end up with this kind of clean uncluttered look as opposed to the look of the existing infohub. (Needs more trees of course, but those could go toward the western end of the installation.)
The most important function of the infohub should be supporting the vitality of the four city sims. The physical presence of stores and galleries is not enough to make the city vibrant and alive with green dots. We need to actively draw visitors through commercial and cultural activities such as fashion shows and discussion meetings. One good example is Osprey Thereian's photography competitions.
The infohub could support activities by means of the map/directory idea, but there may be other ideas too. Consider a community bulletin board for notices of events and activities. Perhaps a bulletin board area on one of Salazar's brick walls could have post-it notes, wanted posters and graffiti style messages in a format clearly designed to resemble an edgy art installation.

Just did some more work out at the Infohub mockup above Phobos. Added a little area for each city neighborhood. Each makes a nice little gathering spot for a chat in the city. I'm thinking the longer walkways connecting them could have some displays and park benches along them...
what do you think?

There are already around 4 Linden trees surround the hub.
Sal, this looks nice and clean. I have all of magellan's pictures and his forum post when it was discovered on a notecard. I'll come by and see what more you have added this afternoon. You are right, we need to get our butts in gear!

I agree with Caroline. No additional trees needed at landing point in Miramare. There are already four (maybe just two now that I think about it, but they are big) there around the perimeter. With those and the other things required at the landing point, I think that will be enough.
I took Traxx's idea of adding some trees in, but but added them farther out west in Barcola, away from the landing point and the two stores Caroline wanted to avoiding having trees in front of. The sitting area in Barcola includes a small wading pool that you can sit on the edge of.
I'm thinking of adding a pergola or something where the pathway elbows there as a place to display some of the historical info for Nova Albion.
What sort of lighting should we/do we need for this area? Not that it needs to be lit, the surrounding builds probably cast plenty of light. But some nice lamps or something would be cool.
I spoke with Jesse Linden earlier and updated him on our progress. I told him we needed a few more days to complete. He said to keep him updated and that it sounded good. We will be able to take advantage of the "Messages" interactive board near the landing point to post community/city related info and notices.

Lordfly has begun building the pedestrian walkway over the trolly line and I added some details to the area today. LORDFLY'S WALKWAY - Connects Miramare/Barcola side to Grignano/Sistiana side over trolley line roadway GRIGNANO AREA - Just across the street and south of the Miramare Infohub BARCOLA AREA - Just down the path and west of the Miramare Infohub Caroline, would you stop by the mockup in Phobos and tell me what you think of the Barcola section with the wading pool and the trees and shrubs. I put in where one of the building's walls are that I think you are concerned about. That little Barcola park area is on the back side of that store. There is an doorway there, but the main opening is off your plaza to the east, closer to Miramare. I've kept the trees far enough away so that they don't go into that building. Do you think this will work? Thanks! Salazar

Glad we're all on the same page about those trees. : ) From: Traxx Hathor (Needs more trees of course, but those could go toward the western end of the installation.) Salazar, your trees and other Linden foliage are exactly the sort of thing I was hoping for when I made that post. A parklike ambience. Carolyn is right -- we already have trees in the orginal telehub plot. The canals are scenic as well. Now the western end of the site can match that standard. The high-quality signage for each of the four sim names is exactly right for an urban park.

You guys have done such an awesome job on this. It is so nice and will be unique. The trees by Honey Lily's are perfect. My problem with them in front of the store is that it would block the view of it and sway into the store, but how you set it is great. I just hope Jesse agrees with everything.

Added An Area For Nova Albion's Historical Exhibits
01-18-2006 23:52
I have added an area just west of the landing point to house the historical info for Nova Albion. We can put the trolley scrap and the photos the Lindens took on display there along with some notecard resources.

Very nice, Sal. Is the glass dome holding the notecard?

From: Caroline Apollo Very nice, Sal. Is the glass dome holding the notecard? The items pictured, table, glass dome and display screen, are just some props I put up as stand-ins. I wanted to get a sense for all the info there is (thanks for those links) before finalizing anything. The actual displays will probably be different. I'm working on getting the actual trolley scrap from Magellan Linden (or whoever is in possession of it now) to put under glass in the final Infohub. We might have to beef up security and any special protective measures in order to be able to exhibit it. The trolley scrap I used in the mock-up is a faux version made from the thread link you gave me.

Yes, that is a photo of the scrap that Magellan found. I have used that photo to make the faux trolley/transit schematic scrap that is currently under glass at the InfoHub mockup. What I really would like to have is the actual scrap that Magellan Linden found to put on display. It is either in his possession or with someone else at Linden Lab. I am working on getting that scrap to put in to the final exhibit. Ideally it would show "Magellan Linden" as the owner. No sense in displaying a knock-off if we can get the real thing.

oh you are so smart =]
Have you tried asking Xenon, who posted those pictures? Maybe he/she can get Magellan to do it since they worked together on this, or so it looks like they did.

Blast From The Past!

Here is a photo I dug up showing some of the lost city ruins before they were cleared away by the Lindens. This was taken in Barcola by (I think) Beryl Greenacre.
