Force Sunset and Mouse Moves Sun fequently. Rendering depending what I am up to.
The rest I really didn't have the chance to check yet...I am afraid to mess something up. ;)

I guess I'll pipe up with the one I use a LOT since it hasn't been mentioned here:

Show Debug Window

Need a vendor installed? Want to split profits or have a commission? I could rez an object and make you touch it for your key.. or I could get the key via the Debug Window at no extra bother to you. Big deal if you're selling to users who are non-technical and don't want to know or need to know about UUIDs.

"Could not find the server domain name"? Debug Window tells me if I need to actually panic and investigate my ISP or not, as opposed to just noticing that something's messed up with SL's connectivity library (apparantly it did in fact resolve, but resolved while it was in the wrong "state", or something like that..)

Basically if this is going where I think it's going please don't take my Debug Window away ;)

The most critical is hide selected and then force sunset, of course, but I use almost absolutely everything else in the Rendering sub menu as well, though not as often but usually at very critical moments.

Actually, could you hot key hide selected? That sure would be nice..

Oh yeah, I use ctrl-shift-1 but frankly I just leave that on most of the time so I don't even switch to it anymore.

Debug!
12-25-2005 20:18
I use Debug- Rendering a lot when building, get rid of the trees, use simple to get rid of other buildings and prim object in the area. If I lose some in the ground I just disappear it to find the lost item. Use it to on clouds if I'm shopping at a place that's in one of the high Sims with lots of clouds. Some times I use Debug just for fun it's so funny to try to fly around with no land or buildings, okay I'm weird lol but I do find Debug very very useful. Always a treat to show a newbie about Debug and how to disappear the SL World. "WOW that is so kewl" :)

What do I use?

Hi,

Ok, I'll admit it. I am pushing the envelope with geekieness.

I find the Debug panel simply fascinating.

I've spent countless hours, mesmerized by some of the information displays.

Plus, I enjoy the 'what happens if I do this' kind of thing.

So I'll do any number of things like turn of selected rendering options and see how that affects the output of some of the consoles.

Sometimes I just like to have the HUD info displaying ...

I've just about all of the options in Debug at least once.

I think it's totally cool and I also ditto all of the other reasons most people have given like finding lost underground things, etc. Changing the environment so you can 'see' more clearly what you are building. I find that I can speed up my viewing by turning some things off occassionally.

cheers ... debug rocks... and i'd miss it if it were not there.

Ooh what a useful thread. I've learned a lot today :) I also force sunset and turn things off for finding lost items and such. I also play with the settings, and I'd love a proper manual so I know what I'm looking at and don't bork anything!

I use nearly everything to fix performance and test things.

Force Sunset is a common one when I'm texturing. Hide Selected and surface patch rendering have saved me more times than I care to remember. Some of the others look really useful but it's not immediately obvious how many of them work

I hide trees whenever I am building I hide the ground water when I lose things - found a dozen pieces of junk laying on bottom of ocean many times I have even been known to hide my body when it gets ib way of looking closely at seams and things - turning off features to reduce lag I do a lot as well - and If I am really tired of looking at bad builds O hit CTL-ALT-SSHIFT 1-9 makes for a nice peaceful afternoon- I know its easier to turn off the monitorbut wheres the fun in that?

Hide Selected is really cool for looking for lost stuff that may be INSIDE another prim, or under a floor too close to the ground to rotate the camera around properly.

Hide Selected has become one of my most powerful building tools!

For large builds, it is invaluable. You can drag select to select a large build, but you're never quite sure what you have selected. You can't move the camera enough to see the whole thing and there is a finite select distance, so some of the build might not be selected.

Solution: Hide Selected

Select the pieces of the build with hide selected. As you select things, they disappear and you can see what's left. When nothing is there, you know you've got the whole thing!

It is *amazingly* useful for really large builds and builds that have Linden trees in them.

In fact, it is the only reasonable way to select a bunch of trees, since drag select won't work with trees and there's no visible indication when a tree is selected.

And on a really large build, the selection highlights can cloud the field of view and slow down the client considerably. Again, Hide Selected allows you to quickly, easily select the build without slowing down the client or obstructing your view!

In short, Hide Selected is an essential building tool for large builds.

I'm another 'force sunset' gal. I like to be able to see how great everyone looks, and it makes it a million times easier to see my tringo and slingo boards.

I use the Rendering >> Types menu frequently, as well as Force Sunset. I also use countless other options in the menu, though not as frequently. Without having the menu available at the moment, none of the other functions really come to mind.

The only thing I know how to use is force sunset (I also wouldn't mind force daylight though - brighter is better as far as my being able to see anything goes). I want to know what the other stuff does, though. Maybe a help section only on the debug menu would be good? Unless there is one that I just haven't found yet.

Rendering Clouds

From: Satchmo Prototype
This coming from someone who has a place in Neualtenburg and have to constantly tell people about Rendering->Types->Clouds.

No kidding. I was pretty happy to find Rendering->Types->Clouds once I started spending a bit of time in Neualtenburg.

Force Sunset

Force Sunset and related, daily.
Remove surface patch to look for lost items as necessary.

Remove 'volume' to easily view property lines and see where my bits of property are in a sim (note, hate having to turn property lines on all the time now). Suggested resolution to this: give us a map option that shows our property and group property we are in (or officers in) highlighted the way you see for sale or auction land.

An observation...
02-03-2006 01:26
It would seem logical that the SL client include some instrumentation of what features are actually being used, automatically reported (anonymously) to Linden, so that you have objective statistics. This is fairly normal in big software houses such as Microsoft, especially with Beta builds, and can help a lot when there is pressure to remove or support a specific feature.

Of course this forum is still useful for finding out Why and What For.

My own most common use is Force Sunset. Heck, I'd even forgotten it came from Debug. Thats mostly due to my timezone being 9 hours ahead of Linden time.

A very useful Debug feature would be a built-in monitor for chat channel messages, where we could select a group of ranges of channels to listen on and see everything flowing across them. There are in-world gadgets that do that I know.

Ctrl Shift N

I only use Ctrl Shift N when I wish to be able to see. Why does SL feel compelled to do the day/night cycle? Am I the only one who finds night quite annoying?

I don't use any of them - but that is mainly because I don't know how to get the Debug menu up. I would look but I'm at work at the moment. Is is an option in the main menu, because I can't remeber spotting anything like it....

The force daylight/sunset sounds ideal for me and the ability to look for lost items in the ground would have saved me a lot of lowering, raising, smoothing and swearing.. ;)

Hit CTRL+Shift+Alt+D and it should show up in your top menu bar.
