Torley: I kept trying to drag it up but it wouldn't stay as a seperate folder, it kept being shoved into other folders, it was strange.

Thanks for all you do, btw. :)

Items in folders given via llGiveInventoryList have inaccurate acquired dates
Don't forget items you buy! It's not just llGiveInventoryList that does it.

Hi lana..........I can`t believe this new feature is causing so much problems for most. Its now taking me TWICE as long to correctly find any objects etc then before. So much for time saving. It must be a americcan way of doing things. Create a service or option that causes you pay more tiem and money to use..The american way.HEHEHE joking. :D

Totally agree NEW inventory systems SUX!

hey Usagi=)..yes..I sent a bug report last night and also talked to live help. Seems they're focusing on a minor aspect of the bug that existed before.
Occasionally all my folders would pop up..BUT it never mattered..because my highlighted selection STAYED HIGHLIGHTED and REMAINED AT THE BOTTOM OF MY INVENTORY WINDOW.
Live help could only tell me about unchecking the" show all ' bullet in the filters window so all the folders wouldn't pop up..but that "fix" doesnt address my problem.
Unfortunately most of my items and sounds and textures and objects are NOT and DO NOT have any part of the folder name in them. so...unless I can devote to memory all the names of every object or article of clothing or items I use everyday..I have been sentenced to drudge thru all my folders and sub folders and sub sub folders without using the search engine. and forget anything thats more than what?..a month old?...because its not considered "recent". I have a small business. I can only imagine the nightmare for those merchants who own and operate entire sims.
Why is it soo difficult to leave things as they were before patch?
If its not broken...why try fixing it?

It seems to me the problem is this. People like to search for and use folders, but the inventory filter only works for items. It's confusing becuase you can search for a folder by name, but you can't actually use that folder unless it contains items that match your filter.

People used to work around this by turning on a filter, searching for a folder, then turning the filter off to use the folder they found. And that doesn't work any more.

Torley says they'll re-enable this workaround, but I believe there's a better way. Just let people use folders that match the filter. It would be really nice if the inventory worked that way.

To clarify: if a folder name matches the current filter, then that folder's contents should be visible and available, even if the contents don't match the current filter. This will make the inventory match users' expectations. If they're searching for a folder, they almost always want to use what's inside that folder.

If the inventory worked that way, then you wouldn't have to "Show All" after searching. You wouldn't have to worry about the inventory window scrolling or changing focus. You just search for your folder, open it, and there's the stuff you were looking for.

Rifkin,

What you speak of is indeed the ideal behavior.

But let's get them to fix things to where they were so we can -at least- use the "workaround" before we ask them to make it better. =)

Trust me.. we want it this way or things get worse. (See last inventory update!)

The next release will restore the "workaround" search so at least we can use the results of our search.

That's all a lot of us need to function in SL for now, and I'd call the quick bugfix a success. =)

Next... we get search to work more efficently. I agree with what you propose 100%...

Yes, it would be nice to have something like this, but it might be nice to be able to choose whether the matching folders are opened or closed, both as a group and individually.

I think if inventory if its over loaded with too mnay objects etc fails to open do to the volume of contents in it. LLabs is always trying to update the features so we have better inventory control. I believe inthe past there was a vote taht ask for a new style inventory means. Problem is LLabs is doing things beyond their abilites abd pushing the client to its limits in the most part. THese days lana i do the best i can with the client LLabs hands me. What I don`t understand lana is why dint they ncrease the groups at this time then do thisinventory feature!

Have a wonderful day lana huggies :)

The new inventory "feature" is a programming task so easy you give it to university students in software development classes. This is why I'm baffled as to how it could have been botched so badly in so many different ways.

Yep it seems when you create a new folder, it doesn't show up in the old inventory right away. You have to create a new inventory window or relog. I'm sure there must be many many people who have freaked out when they seem to "lose a purchase" only to find it the next time they log in.

Tell you what, Eep: I agree things can be ameliorated. But there are far better ways to suggest it. People listen better and are more amenable to working towards a common goal when you treat them in a civil way. :) What isn't allowed on the forums, per the Guidelines:
Flaming, Spamming, Trolling – Flaming (posting a message that is intended to incite anger or directly attack a person or persons), Spamming (multiple posts of the same topic or discussion), and Trolling (a post with an intentionally contrary opinion written with the intent of inciting or getting argumentative opinions) are strongly discouraged. If you think your post might be over-reactive, or that it might fall into one of these definitions, please reconsider posting.
Thanks for suspending me for 3 days, Torley. Here is my reply I was in the process of typing when I found out I was suspended:

From: someone
If there's a better way, by all means go for it, Torley, as I'm all out of patience. I've been bitching, moaning and, oh yes, complaining about SL's wasted bandwidth ever since I came to SL 1.5 years ago--AND IT HAS YET TO BE CHANGED. If you feel my reply violates the TOS/CS, I'm sorry you feel that way but I'm simply speaking my mind. If LL can't take criticism it shouldn't have an open forum and be a dictatorship instead (good luck surviving then).

Instead of shutting up those who criticize you, why not work WITH them and make SL a more enjoyable environment? You're only going to alienate the very customers who keep you in business!

Does this surprize you? Not me. Anytime you rush aany task you get a less then inferior product of and or service. I am so use to this on second life.

It will all be fixed on Wed. See earlier in the thread, the post from Torley Linden. Also try the latest Windows preview; it is fixed there too.

[Edit -update! Cross from another similar thread:

tested this tonight on 1.10.3(3) on the Mac client...

All has been fixed!!

-search works again (you can use the results of the search by having the folder keep focus), fixed, check!
-search shows what you are looking for, not everything else, fixed, check!
-all folders opening madly...fixed, check!

You can even search and use your "recent items" as well. The behavior is all as it was, and was expected.

Thank God.

Thanks again for the rapid fixes, Linden. Hope it won't happen again. =)]

Linux Alpha Preview Release?
06-13-2006 01:46
Mostly directed at Torley Linden,

I know you don't handle the Linux stuff yourself but would it be possible to have Icculus (sp?) cook up a copy of the makefile for the Linux Alpha client to build a release for accessing the preview (SIVA) farm? That way we could better test the functionality of the client before release day on main grid and get the bugs ironed out before it goes public. I think there'd be a lot more more folks on preview with this avaliable as a large number of the folks that are even running the linux alpha in the first place are basically already involved in testing and bug reporting on the main grid.

As it stands, the WinXP preview (Siva) cleint fails to launch under Wine (0.9.11) so I'm not sure what to expect from the next version. I think that it's unrealistic to expect flawless execution under a non-native environment like Wine though.

Looking forward to the next build and hoping the performance comes back up with the bugfixes. And please keep up the good work and keep us posted.

On our June 07 2006 LUG meeting we asked Karen Linden about this. She said, it *could* be done, but (understandably) she didn't go into specifics at that point.

I have added the Linux client to the list of viewers on our Preview downloads page. This will go into effect with the Wednesday, June 14 version of the secondlife.com website.

Right now, there is no new Preview version available for Linux client -- because there's no preview for the next version of Second Life *yet*.

Watch for an announcement about the upcoming version, and return to the preview page (http://secondlife.com/community/preview.php) for downloads at that time.

Thank you very much Karen and Torley and the entire LL team. You guys and gals are awesome! Zi, thanks for the link, I wasn't aware we had a forum now. Kinda been away from the forums or quite a while. I'll head on over there.

Hi all,
When I joined in June, 2004 the inventory system had the same yuk factor as windows explorer.

Today, even with all of the faults that people may find, the improvements that have been made make the inventory system much better than what was available when I started.

I can acutally find things now.

what have they done to the inventory??
06-17-2006 03:57
I'm with you guys all the way. My SL experience took a dive with the changes to the inventory. My workstyle demands that I have to access my objects and textures quickly, and file them appropriately - like others, I created folders to do this.

NOW, not only can I not create folders right away, I can't look for (or move) a single item without ALL of the items being instantly displayed. And this is with "show all folders" unchecked.

When you have upwards of three thousand items (and many of you will have more) this becomes unworkable.

Whenever I go to drag a single item into a new folder or do any kind of inventory maintenance, immediately all the folders AND items spring open so I have to scroll through thousands (literally) of items (not only in my own inventory but also in the Library - where i can't put the item anyway) until I give up hope and just drop the darned thing anywhere to get out of all the folder mess.

Is this really supposed to be an improvement?

In Windows, there is a significant time lag between dragging onto a folder and the folder opening up - enough of a time lag to drag and drop without seeing all the files. Why can't this be the same for the SL inventory.

To display all the items every time is not only overkill but I can't imagine how anybody wants it. It drives me completely MAD.

I used to do serious housekeeping on the Inventory to keep all my items tidy, but even opening two panes and dragging from one to the other is now a complete nightmare. For anybody with a lot of textures, building pieces and objects, this is a major annoyance.

Please DO something about it. Just go back to the folder view PLEASEEEEEE. We are not so lazy that we can't click on a down-arrow to display folder contents. At least give us the choice to do so, if we wish, not display them by default. This can only work for newbies and people with about ten items in their inventory.
