ninjafoo Ng: o.o getting busy!
Artemis Keen: Ohh crowd
Artemis Keen runs off to grab a drink before th emeeting...
Karen Linden: hi there
Karen Linden: sorry -- trillian stole my focus!
Zi Ree: mewmew Karen!
Karen Linden: :-P
Zi Ree: heheh
Karen Linden: where do you want me?
Hello Toonie: Hi Karen.
ninjafoo Ng: welcome Karen :)
Nathan Stewart: hi ya karen
Karen Linden: I just happened to land on the stage.... ;-)
vaguegirl Petty: hi karen
Karen Linden: hello everyone!
Zi Ree: on purpose :)
Zorin Frobozz: Heya Karen. Thanks for the OSX universal binary work, by the way. It may not be Linux but it works great and I wouldn't be online if not for it. :)
Karen Linden: thank you for inviting me to the meeting
Karen Linden: heh -- good to know Zorin
Karen Linden: I'm glad for it too!
Bogus Curry: hello Karen ;D
Karen Linden: so Zi, where should I go?
Karen Linden: ah!
ninjafoo Ng: take a seat Karen
Zi Ree: we just.. pool around.. table :)
Karen Linden: nice anim.
Karen Linden: ;-)
Karen Linden: I feel so...contemplative!
Zi Ree: hehe
ninjafoo Ng: *giggles* sorry :)
Hello Toonie squints at the distant guest-Linden.
Karen Linden: no, it's cool!
Coffee Mug whispers: Ahh! Fresh Hot Coffee
Zi Ree: KAren, you comfortable with.. "record" conversation.. if we.. cut out.. only Q and A?
ramoth: sleepy
Karen Linden: sure -- I don't really care
Karen Linden: whatever is easier for you
Zi Ree: okies, thanky :)
Karen Linden: I don't often attend group talks in SL
ninjafoo Ng: :)
Karen Linden: so forgive me if my delivery is a bit clunky!
Zi Ree: heh.. no worry.. me no ..familiar with this.. either ;)
Karen Linden: so I read the list of questions, and I wish that I had more answers up front
Karen Linden: would you like to go through that list, or concentrate on audience participation?
Zi Ree: we see.. where we go :)
Karen Linden: okay, I have an obligation at 12:45pm PT that I need to make, but I'm yours till then!
ninjafoo Ng: the list was compiled from a thread on the forums and talking to quite a few ppl in world, it genrally covers all of the bases
Zi Ree: sooo... 1.10.2 on the way.. yes?
Zorin Frobozz: I guess I should throw out a question... How much effort is currently being put into Linux development, and when can we expect more, if ever?
Karen Linden: yes, it is going to be deployed soon
Zi Ree: mandatory?
Karen Linden: and yes, there is a linux client for it, AFAIK
Karen Linden: it will be mandatory, yes
Zi Ree: ah
Karen Linden: because of the new in-box feature, and some REALLY important crash fixes, it is
Jinx Trilam: will linux get a preview?
Hello Toonie: The Linux 1.10.2.2 just turned up as we speak.
Christine Montgomery: it's up...
Zi Ree: yea.. that one question..
Karen Linden: cool
Karen Linden: good timing!
Zi Ree: Preview Grid..
Karen Linden: there aren't any linux client-specific fixes there, I don't THINK
Karen Linden: although I asked the occlusion culling engineer to look at that problem
Zi Ree: great :)
Karen Linden: but maybe it got in
Zi Ree: we think.. if Linux can go.. on preview.. lot of bugs.. never will have happened..
Hello Toonie: The preview is a good question since the octree problem might have been caught a lot earlier if there were a linux preview build.
Karen Linden: I was on vacation last week and am not sure of the details
Karen Linden: Hello: yes, you are correct
Karen Linden: we have certainly been lax in providing those builds
Karen Linden: and frankly, 1.10 didn't even run on Linux client until fairly late in the game
Karen Linden: the shaders stuff was problematic
Karen Linden: and we had to go through some effort to get it straightened out for this platform
Hello Toonie: I'm not saying we're owed a preview build, just that it would probably have been smoother sailing for both LL and users were there one.
Zi Ree: *nods*
Karen Linden: no, I understand completely
Karen Linden: this is an interesting time for development at LL
Karen Linden: we're changing a lot of processes, and working on some multi-stage projects that will help things in the long run
Karen Linden: performance, stability, etc.
Karen Linden: stuff that is the second phase of what came out in 1.9.0
Karen Linden: that means we aren't dedicating resources to some things the way we'd like to
Hello Toonie: Yes, it's quite exciting to have watched user-visible development really pick up lately.
Hello Toonie: Albeit just generally rather than Linux-specific.
Karen Linden: yeah, and the fact that we don't have an in-house, dedicated Linux client engineer is really a problem
Zi Ree: so.. preview client.. no in ..near future?
Karen Linden: because it means people have to work on it in their "spare time"
Zi Ree: we have lot.. spare time ;)
Karen Linden: well, I think that a Linux preview client is something we could do.
Zi Ree: ah :)
Karen Linden: heh -- I know you do!
Zorin Frobozz: Is there any chance you might eventually hire a full time linux engineer?
Karen Linden: I haven't talked to the build engineer about it, but will do that today
Karen Linden: YES!
Karen Linden: We would LOOVE to hire someone full time
Karen Linden: one of the reasons I wanted to come talk to you was to advertise this fact ;-)
Zorin Frobozz: Hell, if I were unemployed I'd apply right now.
Jinx Trilam: you could probably get a few job applicants in this room.
Zi Ree: hehe
Karen Linden: please send resumes to me, if you want
Zi Ree: absolutely
Hello Toonie: I'm sure several of us have submitted their resumes... I know I have.
Karen Linden: we have a link on the website for a generic developer position
Karen Linden: ah, okay
Jinx Trilam: I will submit soon!
Karen Linden: well, why don't you submit one to me directly
Karen Linden: with a cover letter detailing your Linux dev experience
Karen Linden: that would be really helpful
Karen Linden: I don't read the new stuff that comes in to the website
Zi Ree: mm.. where we.. need to live :)
Karen Linden: but would be happy to forward stuff on to Cory
Hello Toonie: What's the ideal 'direct' address for that?
Karen Linden: zi: anywhere that has a fast connection?
Zi Ree: cool!
Karen Linden: Hello: you can email me, karen@lindenlab.com
Hello Toonie: Thank you.
Zi Ree: ok.. apart from ..send resumes..
Zi Ree: what can we do.. to help?
Karen Linden: Zi: yeah -- this isn't a job in S.F. if that doesn't work for folks
Zi Ree: bug reports.. come in from us..
Karen Linden: we would be happy to work with remote devs for this
Karen Linden: yes, bug reports.
Zi Ree: what about.. gdb dumps?
Karen Linden: I have asked the folks who do the first round of bug reports to send them to QA
Karen Linden: I don't know where we are at with that
Karen Linden: This is good -- I'm getting a nice list of action items!
Zi Ree: hehe
vaguegirl Petty: we are an action people!
Hello Toonie laughs.
Zorin Frobozz: Sound support! That's another big one that really reduces the experience for Linux users.
Karen Linden: Let me check our internal tracking system -- one sec
Zi Ree: Generally ..open bug tracker.. be nice.. not only for.. Linux
Karen Linden: we have over 30 bugs in our system from your reports
AEnertia Niangao: Webpage open support in NIX client I feel is more important than sound
Zi Ree: ah.. nice :) we.. sure can.. send more *giggles*
Hello Toonie: I suspect that the largest omissions are known to everyone... but the most helpful short-term stuff might be the incredibly unsexy QA stuff like a Linux version of the crash-reporter, that really pays off with respect to all future work.
Karen Linden: I have been in communication from the dev who did the inital Linux client work
Zi Ree: icculus
Karen Linden: yes, Zi
AEnertia Niangao: Ryan must me worked to the bone ;-)
Karen Linden: he is working on a new version now, AFAIK
Karen Linden: I haven't seen it in person yet, tho.
Zi Ree: that.. sound great!
Karen Linden: as soon as it's in my hot little hands I will post it on the site
Zi Ree: :)
Hello Toonie: That's news to us I think, and very exciting...
Jinx Trilam: Yeah!
Zi Ree: about Bug reports..
Karen Linden: however, the problem here is that he's not in-house
vaguegirl Petty: karen i hate to be rude but are you inovlved with the linux client?
Karen Linden: and that things are changing really quickly
Karen Linden: the only way we will have a decent working client is when someone internal can take responsibility for it
Karen Linden: and we don't have that yet
Jinx Trilam: Is Icculus' new work an extension of what was already done for Linux?
Karen Linden: vaguegirl: I am the development program manager for LL
Karen Linden: (well, there's another one now, so I'm A dev pm!)
Zi Ree: bug reports.. can we expect.. feedback? if ..worked on .. resolved?
vaguegirl Petty: ah, so i guess you would be haha!
Karen Linden: vaguegirl: in that I am involved in the schedule, working with devs, seeing projects from creation to deployment, yes
Karen Linden: however, I am not directly responsible for that work, so....
Karen Linden: icculus is usually in contact with Cory
Karen Linden: jinx: yes
Karen Linden: jinx: he did the original work to make the Makefile, get it building, etc.
Karen Linden: he is working on integrating new code that has been introduced since his initial work
Karen Linden: but I'm not sure which part he is doing first
Zi Ree: can we have.. feedback on.. bug reports?
Karen Linden: Zi: like, when the bugs will be fixed?
Zi Ree: if.. bug be worked on.. or resolved?
Karen Linden: yes they will be.
Zi Ree: just.. progress :)
Karen Linden: I do not know when.
Karen Linden: I am sorry that I can't offer more than that right now
Zi Ree: *nods*
Karen Linden: I would be happy to attend future meetings and report on progress, if that helps
vaguegirl Petty: excellent!
ninjafoo Ng: that would be excellent
Zi Ree: this.. be very nice :)
Karen Linden: on days when I'm not managing the release!
Zi Ree: hehe
Zi Ree: the project.. SL Views..
Zi Ree: there.. a Linux person invited?
Karen Linden: yeah -- I am not really involved in that
Zi Ree: ah
Karen Linden: right now, I'm trying to find out if someone is able to answer that question
Karen Linden is a multi-tasker
Zi Ree: :) helps while.. deal with Linux.. geeks :)
Karen Linden: hahaha
Karen Linden: uh oh
Karen Linden: I unseated myself!
Zi Ree: o.o
Karen Linden: sorry bout that!
Zi Ree: no worries :)
Karen Linden: alright
Karen Linden: I don't have any response about the invite
Karen Linden: I can find out later and let you know
Zi Ree: that.. be great, thanky!
Zi Ree: so.. we still submit.. bug reports.. then :)
Zi Ree: feedback.. can greatly.. enhance overall mood.. so.. this be .. one important thing.
Karen Linden: yes, please continue to submit the reports
Zorin Frobozz: I think feedback for bugreports would be good. It's disheartening to send reports and get no response at all.
Zi Ree: yea
Karen Linden: they are in our system, but right now no one owns them
Karen Linden: Zorin: it's sort of the same thing that you get when you file a bug normally, right?
Zi Ree: disclose them ;) so we see.. at least.. what already reported
Karen Linden: we reply only if we need more info from you for the repro?
Karen Linden: yeah, I see
Karen Linden: well, let me talk to QA about that
Zi Ree: that.. general problem.. no only Linux
Karen Linden: we have some new blood in QA
Zi Ree: whee
Karen Linden: they are interested in fixing the known issues communication channel
Karen Linden: maybe this is something that could be dealt with there
Karen Linden: Jim: good news!
Karen Linden: I knew he was working on it -- just wasn't sure if the fix got in or not!
Jim Bunderfeld: We need audi now xD
Jim Bunderfeld: audio*
Karen Linden: yes, I understand that request
Karen Linden: I must have been living in a cave not to realize how important that is!
vaguegirl Petty: hehe
Zi Ree: SL on linux.. seem very *cold* ;)
ninjafoo Ng: do you have a best guess as to when audio might be in - even id its just parcel sound
Karen Linden: yeah, I bet
AEnertia Niangao: Jim: Can you open webpages/books in game now?
Karen Linden: sound was broken for my main machine here for a few weeks, and it was really weird...
Jim Bunderfeld: Let me see
Zi Ree: ah..
Zi Ree: that remind me ..
Karen Linden: mozilla support is not in this build
Karen Linden: that is one of the things that we need to figure out.
Zi Ree: wanted to dare a Linden to.. spend a week as ..Linux user :)
Karen Linden: hahaha
Karen Linden: I have no problem with that!
vaguegirl Petty: good idea!
Zi Ree: we give.. all support we have
Jinx Trilam: no, seriously!
Karen Linden: but I'm not in-world enough to make it worth your while :-(
Zi Ree: from install .. to bugfix
Karen Linden: needless to say. I am REALLY busy :-(
Zi Ree: yea
ninjafoo Ng: understood
Jim Bunderfeld: Karen, are the Linux client bug reports put on high priority?
Karen Linden: I'm not the ideal candidate -- I'm a manager!
Karen Linden: LOL
Zi Ree: but.. you may know.. one candidate ;) *winks*
Karen Linden: jim: unfortunately, no. they are in the list of things that Icculus is assigned
Karen Linden: but until we get a new build from him. I don't know what's in it!
Karen Linden: again, having a dedicated dev would make a lot of this easier
Karen Linden: hey! bring them on Zi!
Zi Ree: you will.. get resumes.. alright ;)
Jim Bunderfeld: There is not an in-house developer owrking on the linux client?
Karen Linden: I hope so
Zorin Frobozz: /164/b7/102353/1.html There was a weird sound issue on OSX sometimes that no one could figure out.. and I managed to. The solution is in that link
Karen Linden glances at her in-box...
Karen Linden: Zorin: wow -- cool. I will pass that along to the Mac dev
Zi Ree: mm.. a changelog for Linux client.. would be nice..
Zi Ree: even if say "No Linux specific fixes"
Zi Ree: so we know.. what to expect
Karen Linden: oh, well, changes would go into the regular release notes
Zi Ree: *nodnods*
Karen Linden: oh, I see -- you want to know that nothing changed!
Karen Linden: of course
Karen Linden: generally silence == no change
ninjafoo Ng: at the moment there are no release notes
Karen Linden: but again, I wasn't even sure the crash fix was in 1.10.2, so...
Karen Linden: :-(
Zi Ree: we need.. communication..
Karen Linden: ninjafoo: what?
Karen Linden: you're kidding!
Karen Linden: the release notes aren't in the package?
Zi Ree: generally. overall better.. understand.. what you guys.. work on
Karen Linden shoots herself in the head
Jinx Trilam: A big plus for us is anything to feel not neglected. You coming here Karen is great. The news that Icculus is working on a new version is great!
Hello Toonie: releasenote.txt is there. *checks it*
Zi Ree: yea Jinx
Karen Linden: oh, whew!
Merrick Moose: In the release notes it often states: Fixed some viewer crashes, I quote.
Karen Linden: yes Jinx
Karen Linden: I understand
Karen Linden: and I wish I was able to do more
Hello Toonie: It's up to date too. :)
ninjafoo Ng: yes, but its just a carbon copy of the general document, theree have been some linux specific fixes, but nothing is mentioned
Zi Ree: yeap..
Karen Linden: I see
Zi Ree: lase release.. some hotkeys.. made tro work
Zi Ree: nobody knew..
Zi Ree: until we find out :)
Zi Ree: ah..
Karen Linden: it may be that in getting the build to compile and run some things are fixed
Zi Ree: important: Cut & Paste no work.. in Linux..
Karen Linden: or, it could mean that some kind dev is fixing things and not telling me! LOL
ninjafoo Ng: yeah - thats a show stopper
Karen Linden: but I do watch all commits, so I don't think that's the case. Most likely they fixed something when getting the package ready to deploy
Karen Linden: okay -- I will note that one too
Jinx Trilam: cut/paste problem makes it very difficult to write scripts!
Zi Ree: *nods*
Zi Ree: no upload.. too
Karen Linden: yeah, no kidding.
Karen Linden: yeah, I know about that one
Zi Ree: probably.. because.. no general file.. requester
Karen Linden: again, we aren't devoting the time we need
Jacek Antonelli: It has inspired some creative use of link messages to re-use code, though :D
Karen Linden: I will be sure to highlight these issues for Icculus so that he knows what you all consider priorities
Hello Toonie: Well yes, no-upload makes it very difficult to make many types of content too. Priorities vary depending on what you do. :)
Zi Ree: but.. with Cut & Paste.. could have simple Line editor.. to throw.. path in to upload :)
Zorin Frobozz: Why are you so incredibly against linking to GTK2 for file requestors? Nearly evefry system has it.. heck, you can link statically if you're that worried about deps.
Jim Bunderfeld: Karen, OPEN SOURCE CLIENT :-p
Karen Linden: Zorin: uh....wrong audience for that? I have no idea how to answer that question.
Karen Linden: Jim: that would be great!
Zorin Frobozz: Oh, sorry.
Karen Linden: no problem Zorin
Karen Linden: you need a dev for those kinds of questions/suggestions, though
Zi Ree: one thing.. me like to know..
Karen Linden: yes?
Zi Ree: why.. this release mandatory? :)
Zi Ree: without.. grid restart.. what happen.. if use old client?
Zi Ree: apart from crashes?
Karen Linden: Zi: one of the crashes in this version is affecting a large number of people
Zi Ree: Yea.. KAren
Karen Linden: if we don't make the new version mandatory, people won't update and continue to crash from that bug
Zi Ree: so basically.. you no trust.. people update crashy client? *giggles*
Karen Linden: no, it's just a matter of providing a better experience for people
Zi Ree: mm..
Zi Ree: me ..old fashioned.. maybe ;) like to choose.. when want to update..
ninjafoo Ng: thats one thing we do think is important for the LInux client, could the mandatory nature of some release be relaxed when new clients only contain cosmetic changed?
Karen Linden: yeah, someday that will be the case
Zi Ree: if no ..*need* to, yet only for.. fixes
Karen Linden: but not now. :-)
Karen Linden: alright, folks, my other meeting is impending
Jacek Antonelli: I just want to repeat (again) how very important feedback is to us, just to know that something is being done. The silence, it kills us. *sheds a tiny, tiny tear*
Zi Ree: *nods*
Karen Linden: what other questions can I answer in my remaining time here?
Karen Linden: I have a list that looks like this:
Hello Toonie: Thanks for your time, Karen.
Karen Linden: Preview client, Resumes!, Bug Fixes!, **Audio**, cut and paste
Jinx Trilam: A couple Linden posts a week in the Linux Forum owuld be suitable "warm furry" feedback.
Karen Linden: what am I forgetting that is near-term, higher importance?
Jim Bunderfeld: 1 More thing Karen is there anyway to maximize the screen?
ninjafoo Ng: thats perfect :)
Zi Ree: file uploads
vaguegirl Petty: i think communication with people is really important!
Karen Linden: Jim: oh! you know, I do not know.
Karen Linden: vaguegirl: I completely agree
Jacek Antonelli: yes, file uploads and better communication
Papi Hayek: Karen : AGP :)
Karen Linden: oh! inclusion of linux client fixes (or not) in the release notes !
Zi Ree: we often.. go crazy in forum.. a Linden answer would.. ease that :)
ninjafoo Ng: yes
Karen Linden: I understand
Karen Linden: frankly, I look at the forum every now and then, but usually lack the technical knowledge to contribute
Hello Toonie: Well, as a builder, uploads I'd rate even higher than audio (as great at that would be), since the win32 SL client started crashing every startup and I've had to move all my work over to the Linux client.
Zorin Frobozz: Mind if I ask an unrelated question, now that Karen is here? It's osmething that's been bugging me for months...
Karen Linden: without an in-house dev to point questions at, I am sort of helpless there.
Merrick Moose: Is there a dev linden that can watch our bug reports time to time?
Karen Linden: uh, sure
Karen Linden: Merrick: we do look at the bug reports -- those are on Icculus's plate
Merrick Moose: So long as someone is looking
Karen Linden: again -- he might be working on them. I don't know how used to our internal suystem he is.
Karen Linden: Merrick: yes
Zorin Frobozz: OSX client has been crashing very regularly when switching between full screen and windowed for many months and versions now.. I'm just wondering if you have any idea if this is going to be fixed soon or where we can look or ask to find out...
Karen Linden: Zorin: what is your other question
Karen Linden: oh, is that still happening?
Karen Linden: PowerPC, right?
Zorin Frobozz: Intel
Karen Linden: and PowerPC only?
Karen Linden: oh.
Karen Linden: For months?
vaguegirl Petty: im on a intel mac mini and no problems
Karen Linden: Like, since it was in alpha?
Zorin Frobozz: Well, since I started anyway.
Zi Ree: so..
Zorin Frobozz: yeah.. It crashed yesterday on the switch, even.
Karen Linden: okay, I can look into that and see if there's any data for you Zorin
Zorin Frobozz: And every time, I send a report. :)
Zi Ree: Karen, me want .. thank you for come here.. dedicate some time to us :)
Karen Linden: I will IM you later today with an update
Karen Linden: of course Zi
Karen Linden: my pleasure
vaguegirl Petty: thanks a LOT karen!
Jacek Antonelli: Yes, thank you so much for coming, Karen, we really really appreciate it. A lot!
ninjafoo Ng: thanks so much for comming over :)
Zorin Frobozz: I appreciate it. You're the best.
Jinx Trilam: Thank you for coming Karen! clap-clap!
Oddity Beeks: Thanks, Karen. Have a nice day!
Karen Linden: I will be back in the next few weeks with an update
Jim Bunderfeld: Thank you Karen!
Zorin Frobozz: Oh, and Aura says you rock. :)
Zi Ree: a little.. communication.. do wonders.. now we know.. Icculus be .. on the client again.
Karen Linden: Thank you all for being so open!
ninjafoo Ng: look forward o it :)
Kord Clifton applaudes
Jacek Antonelli cheers for Karen
Jim Bunderfeld: linux
Jim Bunderfeld: tux
vaguegirl Petty applauds as well
Hello Toonie: \o/
Karen Linden: alright, folks. I will talk to you soon!
vaguegirl Petty: bye!
Karen Linden: thank you Zi, for the invite. Please keep in touch!
Jim Bunderfeld: \o/ \o/ \o/
Spottie Carnot: \o/
AEnertia Niangao: \(o-o)/
Hello Toonie: Take care Karen.
Zi Ree: will do :)
Jim Bunderfeld: lol
Jim Bunderfeld: \(o-o)/
Karen Linden: bye all!
ninjafoo Ng: byeee - thanksyou!
AEnertia Niangao: kakite
Artemis Keen cheers!
Zorin Frobozz: Bubye!
Karen Linden: oh yeah -- Zi, will you email me a transcript, please?
Zi Ree: yeap!
Karen Linden: I'd like to have someone hold me to my promises. ;-)
Zi Ree: hehe
Zorin Frobozz: Should probably post the transcript in the forums for those who missed the meeting
Karen Linden: yeah -- that would be good
Jim Bunderfeld: yes zorin, good idea
Jacek Antonelli: yes, forum post is good
ninjafoo Ng: we will do
Karen Linden: alright, I will look there later
Karen Linden: thanks again all!
Karen Linden: bye
Jacek Antonelli: Bye!
Zi Ree: bye!
Jinx Trilam: bye
ninjafoo Ng: bye!!
vaguegirl Petty: bye
Artemis Keen: Bye ^^
