Hello Toonie: The preview is a good question since the octree problem might have been caught a lot earlier if there were a linux preview build.

Karen Linden: we have certainly been lax in providing those builds
Karen Linden: and frankly, 1.10 didn't even run on Linux client until fairly late in the game
Karen Linden: the shaders stuff was problematic
Karen Linden: and we had to go through some effort to get it straightened out for this platform

Karen Linden: we're changing a lot of processes, and working on some multi-stage projects that will help things in the long run

Hello Toonie: I suspect that the largest omissions are known to everyone... but the most helpful short-term stuff might be the incredibly unsexy QA stuff like a Linux version of the crash-reporter, that really pays off with respect to all future work.

Hello Toonie: Well, as a builder, uploads I'd rate even higher than audio (as great at that would be), since the win32 SL client started crashing every startup and I've had to move all my work over to the Linux client.

Karen Linden: without an in-house dev to point questions at, I am sort of helpless there.

Can I just say a big thanks to Karen and Zi for this. It is so nice to get some feedback about what is going on behind the scenes. Sorry if I was a bit silent at the meeting.. I had to be afk for some of the time, but it was great to see so many people there!

i just wanted to suggest a workaround that i've used ever since i learned about it... in windowmode, just click the green 'maximize' button in the windowbar. fullscreen, without the fullscreen crash... easier to get to other running apps, too...

also, if you grab the window at the lower-right corner, as if there were a resize tab there, and drag... well go-o-olly, i guess there -is- a resize tab there!!

I would not agree that Linden Lab needs a full time Linux geek. I think the problem is that they now highly depend on the work of one developer. Much more important as to have one full time developer would be to open up the development process. I think the LibSecondlife people do have to do a lot of work because many things are cloaked. What I read from the Uk IBM guys at eightbar ( http://eightbar.co.uk/2006/06/01/sl-projects-to-watch-out-for/) was exactly what i did expect:



I do not see any benefit of the cloaking. I am sure that there are many criminals out there that now use their knowledge for abusing the system. And that is because the protocol was not publicly revised.

Lets not forget that there are som many projects out their that have no full-timer but are way more progressive.

Bots that work with second life.... no GUI... just a fast bot...
Imagine, say, 100 bots, running on a shell server (which has 100 IP addresses, so you can't block it via limiting logins per IP address). Imagine they also have anti-idle... (if you can script a bot that works in SL, you can keep it from idling!). Now... what will all these bots do?
Something tells me this might be why LL killed dwell.

But you could block the whole IP range, if it became a noticable problem.

Crash on teleport was a show stopper, clipboard is a royal PITA but not quite same league. As for letting the Lindens know your bug priority, not a vast amount you can do, we did get a hit list to Karen and will be checking with her for progress reports. best you can do for now is hang tight.
