New inventory system sucks!

Damn!

It has just become damned near impossible to browse your inventory! Why the heck does all folders open when i turn OFF "show all folders"???

And why show all the folders when I search with it on?

This must be fixed!

Already not happy

I go on shopping spree and remember one name of the multiple items I bought. I type that name in and find it. The button that allowed me to see all inventory around that item and keep that item highlighted is gone. SO now I have to know each name of each item I purchased (and we know that some creators use some bizarre item names) or I have to scan my entire inventory manually to find new items. My 'recent items' tab is empty. But I just bought 4 things - so that's a useless tool. And the one useful inventory tool has made its way to the scrap heap.

You people should really run these 'improvements' by the users before you implement them.

I dare say the Lindens aren't the shopping holics that some of the rest of us are, what is the point of having a search feature now when you whole inventory still comes up and you now have to scroll to find that one item you were looking for, this is one feature that I think a majority of people are going to be complaining about. Maybe its an attempt to cut my shopping habit in half :(

Hot diggity dang! *peeps into thread and leaps in*

Alrighty, first things first. We wanna get the bugs fixed fast. I already reported one: Close All Folders doesn't work for Recent Items. I'll be hunting for more, and all your step-by-step solid reproductions of the problems will help us. Inworld, that's HELP menu > REPORT BUG.

I noticed a similar bug to the one Moonshine mentioned too.

Second, and more importantly, you may already know this but in case you haven't, please allow me to emphasize: these changes were all Previewed before being released on Main Grid. Please, please for your own benefit and the community's, don't ever hesitate to check out Second Life Preview. We've made it available for exactly the purpose of getting early feedback.

Please allow me to clarify that some of what you want to do is already featured within. A LOT now revolves over controlling filters--giving *you* the ability to see *your* inventory the way *you* want. Yes, it's about individual customization.

I'll explain more...

About Recent Items, it's not the most obvious thing but by default it shows items received Since Logoff. However, *however*!!! YOU CAN CHANGE THIS TODAY TO SHOW "STUFF I GOT IN THE LAST WEEK" or just about any time you wanna choose. How?

EASY!!!

FILTERS menu > MODIFY CURRENT and see at the bottom where you can enter Hours Ago and Days Ago? FILL THAT IN. ^_^

This Recent Items "inbox" is designed especially for shoppers and any Resi who wants to manage their inventory better.

Confusing at first? Sure, I was confused. But like so many SL features, we'll get used to it through greater use, and enjoy the benefits of a better-organized inventory too.

Cyn--sounds like the fix for your prob is... just go to FILTERS menu > MODIFY CURRENT and uncheck SHOW ALL FOLDERS. Then it'll *just* show the folders with stuff in them you're searching for.

And I am a "shopping holic". Haven't had any time to do much lately because of my work--but, it's in my heart, and certainly is part of my roots here. For that matter, so is usability; so do know the developers who worked on this care about your feedback, and I'll be communicating what comes up to them. :)

I should also mention there are gonna be more improvements: this is a piece of a bigger puzzle. (Who remembers when we couldn't even search inventory, or multi-select items?) Stay tuned!!!

I agree with the original poster that the inventory update sucks.

The update removed what was for me the most valuable feature of the inventory browser; namely the search function. The new serch function is hardly as useful as the old version. It just shows too much stuff yur not looking for. What were the devs smoking when they thought this one up????

I am going to be a fan boy..heh

I like the new system, yes some bugs, some things I don't like..but over all I like it.

I like I can modify so my inventory will not show animations, snapshots, gestures, etc...all those things that I do use everyday but don't need them always, so nice to have inventory down to just 4-5 folders where all the things I do use are. And have the ability to turn them on again when I need those I turned off. Love it!!

Bad side, I hate not having where you can search, click on the item you wanted to find, then clear the search, and everything closes, except for the item you clicked on..Love that, NEED that, won't be happy until I see that return.

And the bug where anything happens, all your folders open :( Hate it, but it is a bug and can live with it until fixed, as it will be.

You're most graciously welcome, Cyn!

Hok, please read what I suggested to Cyn above... you'll be happier!

Looks like that's a major confusion right now--that "Show all folders" is checked by default and people don't know how to turn it off!

Michael, that bug--

And the bug where anything happens, all your folders open :( Hate it, but it is a bug and can live with it until fixed, as it will be.

got a repro for it? I've seen it, but don't have a solid repro yet.

OK - Heres a repro
06-07-2006 20:05
I filed a bug report on this:

1. Go into inventory - search on a folder name
2. Select (focus) on folder name
3. Delete search term.

Observed results:
ENTIRE INVENTORY EXPANDS
WINDOW FOCUS DOES NOT REMAIN ON SELECTED/FOCUS FOLDER

Expected results:
Window should remain focused on folder you were looking for, so you can actually see the contents (which have different names than the folder) in the Inventory window

What this means is that the 'Search' term is only good for finding ONE item, whose name you know. It's absolutely useless to find your folder named 'Tux and Wings Outfit' and looking in that folder to see what all makes up your outfit, since you now have to manually go back and close all your folders which have been exanded on you.....

Tell you what, Torley: aggressively persuade the Linden devs to make SL's updater PATCH SL instead of mindlessly redownload the entire client (~25MB now with Mozilla integration) and I'll be more inclined to waste even MORE time downloading yet ANOTHER, SEPARATE ~25MB update for the preview version. There is NO reason only the SPECIFIC, NECESSARY files can't be PATCHED. This inefficient waste of bandwidth and time is just freakin' ridiculous and so junior-coder-level it's pathetic!

Perhaps when LL gets its SL updater act together more residents will be WILLING to test the preview--most couldn't even be bothered with it. Oh and hiring REAL testers who actually KNOW how to test SL might be worth it too. I'm still available for such employment, incidentally...

Thanx Duke--I know what you're referring to, I've seen it once or twice myself in the course of naturally searching through my inventory, but I couldn't get it to repro. What happens for me instead is all folders which previously weren't expanded get collapsed following my manual deletion (with the Delete key) or pressing the X on the search bar. Is there something else I need to do? And you find you can do this over and over?

Tell you what, Eep: I agree things can be ameliorated. But there are far better ways to suggest it. People listen better and are more amenable to working towards a common goal when you treat them in a civil way. :) What isn't allowed on the forums, per the Guidelines:

UPDATE: I was able to repro what Duke described after doing Clear Cache and searching for a folder while my inventory was streaming. Appears to be similar, or the same as this:

====
Inventory: during inventory streaming, every single folder expands when alternating clicks on All items and Recent Items tabs

REPRO:
Log into SL.
Clear cache and then relog into SL. (So inventory will stream this time.)
Click on Recent Items tab, then All Items tab, and keep going back and forth while inventory streams.

OBSERVED:
Eventually, for some reason, ALL folders will expand! There'll be a quick flash in the window when this happens.

EXPECTED:
This shouldn't happen.
====

After it was done streaming (loading the # of items at the top), I wasn't able to do it again in a session. If you do have a way to persistently do this, please fill us in.

I will upload a video soon so y'all can see!

This seems to happen for me, and for other's who mentioned it in the Mentor group chat.

This does not seem to me to be the same problem that Torley described.

By the way, why can't we search folder names only, ignoring item names. as an option?

And why can't we search for specific items of clothes, like socks?

And why can't we search by creator?!!!!!! I think that would be good; I tend to remember the creator's names for stuff I like better than the name of and object or outfit. I seem to remember saying that at least a year ago.

By the way again, was there a preview for this very latest version with this style inventory?

If so it escaped my notice.

YES yes yes... this is a horrible problem!! Thanks for making it clear so it can be fixed. In the meantime, my inventory management has effectively been made useless. =( Between that and the now useless Mac client (see the Mac Discussion for more), I can no longer enjoy what I pay for.

I agree, this is not the problem Torley described. It seems to be by design, and is easily replicated following the big report.

As for bugs and issues cropping up consantly... Linden Labs, you can't rely solely on the preview grid users to do your testing. You must agressively QA these releases in house with dedicated testers (if done already, do more). Over and over such vividly obvious bugs and UI issues make into new releases. These releases focus on adding "features" instead of addressing key concerns... or they break things that worked.

I'm all for forward movement, but make sure your car has 4 wheels on it before you step on the gas harder, you know?

Uploaded here (yeah, posting video bug reports to YouTube... aren't we Web 2.0)... please go watch this and let me know if the end result looks familiar:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syH65DyNrYk

Sowwies, I know the quality's a bit crap and I didn't video capture my cursor, but watch as I click back and forth between the inventory tabs; then look for the FLASH! towards the end where the folders expand.

That's the bug I'm talking about.

Bethanee: understood, and warmly felt. We've never relied solely on Preview testing, but it always helps to have such a diverse perspective of views; a lot of things come up that we wouldn't have thought of overwise. And of course, I am a composite alloy of Resident views. :)

Sowwies for confusion for that--I should have specified that the *end result* of all the folders expansion appears similar or the same, even if the initial repro is different.

All roads lead to...

I'll post another video bug report of what Duke mentioned later.

Stick around! :)

I found out what it was! This appears to happen only when "Show all folders" is unchecked in the filters. Reason why I had such a hard time before is because I was testing another bug with "Show all folders" checked.

So herein lies the video evidence; my cursor isn't shown but it's pretty obvious what I'm doing:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=RffQKLDxtUE

So it looks like we've got at least a couple bugs with unwanted expansion of all folders.

P.S. Pay no attention to me napping in the video... it's just been a hard day at work. =^_^=

That's it!
EXCEPT.... it also happens for me regardless of whether show all folders is checked or not.

The difference is show all folders... well.. shows all folders, so even the Linden library opens up.

But you can see the issue. You lose focus of the searched folder whether you have "show all folders" on or off. You just see more crap you weren't looking for with "show all folders" on.

The behavior should be.. once you search for something, click on a folder, then hit the "X", you see all the folders but your focus remains on that clicked folder.

Or even better, you double-click on it and go into see all the contents... but let's at least get it to where it was first =)

What happens now as you can see in your video:

Once you search for something, click on a folder, then hit the "X", you see all the folders with nothing focused on as if you had never done the search in the 1st place.

[P.S. all folders open up after you search no matter what settings are on! This makes inventory basically unusable as all organization is out the window. I am forced to stop using SL until this (and search) is fixed, as I can't manage my stuff/clothes/items anymore effectively.... =( If I was a business owner I would be up in arms.]

These changes were all Previewed before being released on Main Grid.

I'm not talking about opening up the an area full of all the new 'features' and have us stumble into them (although that preview grid was closed every time I tried to get in it). I mean form groups of users (sometimes called 'focus groups') and run these changes past them. Post information about the proposed changes and get feedback from the users prior to implementation. A coder in his cublicle is far removed from me in a mall.

When I asked why I could'nt understand anything in the Debug Menu you responded that I was'nt suppose to. I think the same can be said for the inventory search tools now. Hopefully someone at Teazers University can decipher this for some of us before it changes again.

Thank you for taking this bug report so seriously.

The bug I'm talking about is the one in: http://youtube.com/watch?v=RffQKLDxtUE

You see, you need to uncheck 'Show all folders' when you have 500 folders...so you can see the search results....especially when you're searching for a folder name...because all the 'unmatching' folders show in the window with it checked (then what's the point of the search???)

I'm a 40 year old man, but even I was reduced to tears last night, trying to find stuff in my inventory....just ask Live Help volunteers from last night..

I was handed a folder of important stuff, and I could not find out what was in it without manually closing all the folders in my inventory and scouring all 6,000 items to find it. The search bar has become completely useless for finding anything but a single object whose name you know.

Basically, the real point of the bug is not even the folder expansion. The point is that the item you were searching for and clicked on is no longer left in the inventory window. Focus no longer remains where you had it. I could care less that the inventory expands as long as it leaves me looking at what I was searching for....

Organizing inventory for me is done by creating folders that have meaningful names (like: Stuff I Bought and Stuff I Made and TeaZers Instructor Information) and then putting stuff in them....this organization is now utterly useless.

I'm BEGGING you - PLEADING with you...on my hands and knees........PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put this back the way it was?

I wholeheartedly agree. I am so used to looking for a folder name in search, then clearing the search box to get at the found folder's contents, that I ca nhardly work with the inventory without that feature anymore. All folders get opened, even the "Library" folder, which is completely wrong. Quite the opposite should happen: when you type in a search pattern and click on (focus) one of the results, then clear the search box again, all folders should collapse, save for the one, your focused search result is in.
