Robin Linden made an interesting comment in the blog post about casinos. The second bullet caught my eye... From: Robin Linden Thanks for all your feedback. A couple of things I want to address:
- Residents need to take responsibility for your own activities and for complying with the laws of the local jurisdiction in which you reside. If you are, or are concerned that you may be, engaging in illegal gambling, you should stop.
- the identity authentication system that we’re working on will allow you to verify aspects of your real life identity, such as age, or geo-location. It’s fully opt-in, and our current thinking is it would replace the ‘payment info on file/used’ system of verification. Anybody heard about this before? For those that want LL to lose all their no-payment-on-file residents, would this be more preferable?

Oh. I was actually looking for something about this topic in particular. Threads that get locked or that get over 100 replies before I see them I tend to just skip or read the last page or so.
Sorry to have wasted your time, Wiseguy.

I really don't think Robin Linden was saying the other residents would know that Peggy Paperdoll is really Elain Evans living at 4321 50th St in Des Moines, Ill and is a 75 year old twice divorced single great grandmother with an annual income of 500 million USD. But Linden Labs would know and could vouche for Peggy as a genuine person in good (or bad) standing in Second Life since LL would have that information stored in a database (preferrably a secure one).
That is an ability I think LL should have had from day one (or, at least once the plan for the growth of the game started becoming a reality). As it apparently is right now, LL has no way of identifying any particular member (or resident). And with the potential for legal actions being taken for various activities taking place in SL, Linden Labs has finally taken their heads out of their..............ummmmmm, how do I say? LOL.
I welcome a way for us to know if we are dealing with reputable people or scoundrals.

The only authentication of age I see as acceptable is for LL to truly verify that anyone on the adult grid is over 18. Once that is done you can safely assume anyone you are dealing with is of legal age and you need do nothing more.

I'd rather not have my geo-location closer to my home than say, Northern Hemisphere. I might be willing for USA, but nothing more, (even though I've blown my state quite a few times, but that's MY choice.) I, however, have no problem sharing my age. I agree, it is quite acceptable for LL to verify age.. and now I wish like heck they had done this when they opened the registration system

But what's acceptable to show other residents? Just "over 18" or not?

I'm afraid its going to be more than just age verification - I feel that it is likely Linden will keep logs of data to and from your IP just like Google Yahoo and Microsoft keep track of your searches linked to your IP. (microsoft claims that they never look at this data but will make it available to law enforcement if asked.)

The good thing about requiring bank information is to keep away youngin's and griefers... the bad is the ever-popular response "If it's free why are they asking for my bank information" I used to get from friends.

well its completely unrealistic for Linden Labs to think they can create a system that will allow content that will be Place smart to the point no one will be able to break any laws anywhere.
This is more allowing content providers to partially protect THEMSELVES since they tell us what we do is our responisbility, then we need tools as a shield.
For example if New Crazyland bans Cyber Nudity and I own a Strip Club I can ban people from New Crazyland so im not showing them something thats illegal.
I dont think these rules are going to let people run casinos in SL if its illegal to have casinos hosted on US computer hardware. (they arent sure about this yet)

I think this is a good idea. How many of us hand out business cards to strangers that tell them our phone number and where we work? If you're willing to do that in the real world, why panic about doing it in SL? Is it really any different than being listed in the phone book?

Besides, that would be a work number, which should sanely be different from the home number. I wouldn't have problems giving out my work number had I one, but the only phone you can reach me at is my home... And it's unlisted for a reason. So, I'd rather it didn't show up on the profile. Same going for my home address.
