A few days ago, Eltee and I posted this thread here -- which was quickly moved to the "Current Version Feature Feedback" forum, which, in all honesty -- is not frequented by Linden Lab, and is mainly an inter-resident discussion forum. (Even if it was designed as otherwise -- all you have to do is look at the threads.)

This issue does not need to be discussed among residents: it needs to be brought to the attention of engineers, and fixed. To add creedence to this, there are many more people noticing this issue as the days go on :

"Pathetic State of Object LOD in 1.10.2"

"Enlarged and distsorted prims Pt 2"

I give you Hexagon MAN!!!

Post by Pol Tabla on the issue

Enlarged, swollen, stretched-out prims

All within the last 24 hours, -in addition- to our original thread.

Torley, while I understand the need for classification and keeping the forums in order -- I do honestly believe this needs an "answer", not simply a discussion amongst the residents in a non-Linden forum.

This is a big issue, and it needs to be up front, and not on the back burner. We were told that this is pretty much 'the way it is' now, but LOD was pretty much constant from 1.0 on; now we suddenly have a rather significant degradation in graphics quality even at maximum levels.

This was an undocumented change which has had widespread effects. We don't even know if it was a "feature" which needs "feedback" as it was not even mentioned in the release notes --- it may be a bug; we're not sure, but we need answers, the "what, where, when and why" before we can proceed.

Note and update: I suppose that we were told by Runitai Linden that LOD -was- simply *lowered* to "increase performance*.... I'm not sure how many people have noticed a substantial FPS increase, but I do know a LOT of people have noticed trash content.

Thousands of our avatars have been hit hard by this change. Many other people are seeing the problems. Please, please, please reconsider it. Please restore LOD back to the way it was --- the performance gain (if there was any) was simply not worth the loss of detail.

As eltee said:

From: Eltee Statosky

please, let us see the world we've made for ourselves, the way we have been able to see it for almost *THREE YEARS* now...

With no resident communication, no dialog, not even the courtesy of a release note, every single user of SL just had 'polygon cataracts' put into their eyes.

Even at -maximum settings-, in many cases we do not have the detail we had before at -medium settings-.

Avatar producers have had to put the following disclaimers in their profiles:

From: From Ninja Weasel Studios Avatars

If you are contacting me because your NWS avatar suddenly looks blocky, go to /108/69/112781/1.html#post1082561 and tell Linden Labs, they did it.

We're already starting to get complaints on the issue, and all we can say is, "Well, things simply don't look as good as they used to before."

This is rapidly becoming a serious issue.

Now I know from past experiences that when a change happens on SL, it's like walking on the sun to get it reversed. Maybe people were complaining about performance -- they always have. Occlusion Culling was a great step in the right direction on this issue; completely obliterating level of detail was not.

Please reconsider this change. There's little point to "fast content" (and I do not see any evidence of a speed increase even on the slower systems i've used) when that "fast content" isn't even worth seeing.

I beg, and implore, Linden Lab to carefully read over this thread -- every page, every screenshot -- and recognize, and take in, what problems this sudden undocumented change is causing for people; and reverse it. And consider less 'brute force' methods of improving performance.

Hi Michi. :)

For clarification, some forums are read more by Lindens than you may think--but you don't know that without corresponding responses. Of course, with all the Linden replies in here (which I am partially to blame for ;) ), SL Answers is like the center of the universe to some. Understood. But things also sink fast here--look at all the questions that get asked. So it doesn't guarantee a "remain on the forefront" status either.

Then what does?

I'll tell you what. As you cited yourself via links, the sheer importance of discussion amongst Residents is never to be understated. Why, you're not the only one having problems, and having others in the community say "This is happening to me too!" instead of not being able to reply here--that sucks. 50 shared experiences by 50 different Resis giving insight is *powerful*. And oh, keep in mind that in other forums, Lindens can *still* reply, as you've recently seen Runitai do.

Also, have you talked to Cheyenne Marquez about her own experiences? Let's see who else now... I know Lex Neva was also bothered by the LOD changes. We're definitely keeping an eye out inworld in addition to the forums and I will emphasize this is important to us.

Now, thank you a LOT for all this info. I know it took you precious time to compile it, so--

I'll get it to our graphics gurus ASAP. Right now.

Update!

From: someone
Heard back.
THIS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED:

Level-of-Detail (LOD) has been scaled up to higher settings in response to all the problems that've been reported.

Watch for a fix in a future version of Second Life soon; and I know some, including myself, will ask "how soon?" but I don't know for sure yet. When I do know, I'll be announcing it VERY loudly in this very thread. You have my word.
