Over the next few weeks and months we'll be advertising inworld about this new IRC channel on irc.freenode.net

Basically, it'll be a place where the feted inner core can help out new users with questions they might have on scripting, building, texturing, etc.

We'll be giving IRC operator status to those Feted Inner Core individuals who are the most helpful over the next couple of months or so.

We won't have a lot of people to start up with, however over the months ahead we hope to build out a great following of people.

Hope to see you there!

Please note because minors may be in this channel, please do not give out any personal information at all!

Thanks!

?

Why not just join the 50+ people idling in EFnet's #secondlife channel? Already FIC-approved. :P

I am gonna assume your intentions, and your use of the term FIC are benign. Why this other IRC location? Currently numerous experienced SL users reside on the effnet #SecondLife, and they routinely offer help and advice to users. While I am an IRC noob, my understanding is that this has been going on already for a VERY long time.

 Well your results may vary, but from what I have seen, the folks in the main #SecondLife channel on effnet have been VERY welcoming.

Well, not a lot of people are in there yet. This is the first I've brought it up,it'll take awhile to gain some momentum.

But, you know, options are always good. Gives people choices, try different things.

Going to have to agree. I do think it is good to have options. Like, I have many friends who DJ on different radio stations in world. Each station has its own atmosphere. And depending on my mood, that is where I end up (if I end up there at all.. hehe). I'm sure this would be no different. It does not mean either is "bad", just that variety can add.. well.. variety. :)

That doesn't have blaze's stamp of approval on it, though.

Population and activity has nothing to do with it, man.

Blaze,

I will include the server/channel as on option for the web based-Java IRC client on SLUniverse. Choice is definitely always a good thing.

The efnet one has Lindens in it too. I mean, who wants to talk to them?

The channel on the Efnet is hardly welcoming, lets be real. I seriously doubt that Blaze's channel will be any better though.

Well, actually that could be a barrier to some - it is hard to feel like you can speak freely on a channel that is inhabited regularly by employees of the company you are speaking about. There is definitely a value in offering choice, whatever Blaze's motivations are.

Someone needs to be watching the Lindens in Cienna's IRC channel to see if they are up to something they shouldn't be.

Plus of course the Linden staffers can be in blaze's IRC room using any name of they choose.

I have never, ever, ever seen someone banned / censored in the channel.
There's no fee to join and you can come whenever you want. There are usually Lindens in channel during day hours and people are generally polite.

What's not welcoming?

I bite occasionally? Though some might actually find that welcoming.

Sometimes I fume about the injustice of marshmallows. Marshmallows may, thus, feel less than comfortable during these sessions.

He does, and he will even send private messages to continue the fuming.

Actually, as someone who uses the channel on a semi-regular but sporadic basis, I will say I found it intimidating as hell at first. The IRC in general appeals to more technically savvy users, and I have always found people on the IRC snarkier than your average chat room. It really varies, but I can understand why some people would find it unwelcoming or intimidating.

Banned yes, censored no. There have inevitably been a few people who have been absolute tools and required to be banned. But censorship I've never seen.

Polite? What window are you in? :P

I believe IRC has a requirement that Channels have a sarcasm/snark level of 10.
