From: Kanker Greenacre I wonder what anyone's reaction would be to the following avatars:
- Adolf Hitler - Joseph Stalin - KKK Grand Wizard - Confederate soldier - Osama Bin Ladin - Charles Manson - George Custer - Robert Oppenheimer
One av that comes to mind whose image is laughed off generally in the world but taken dead-serious by those who went through it, is Mao Tse Tung. My biological, offline father told me all these horror stories of how he escaped China and saw many vile attrocities along the way. Especially with all the poor people wanting something to eat and caring nothing for high political rhetoric, not to mention all the bloody violence. So, as it stands, if Chairman Mao were to make an appearance in the WA (I've seen Little Red Books inworld and LordFly's ROTFLMAO TSE TUNG parody), it would be unlikely that it'd be considered "broadly offensive" given the context. However, if SL ever expands to a big Chinese audience, I can see controversy and cultural differences over that.

From: Chris Wilde Just because someone was a confederate soldier doesnt mean they were a slave owner or racist. In addition, just because someone was a union soldier doesnt mean they werent a racist. To put them in the list with those others is an insult. You think the confederate army was made up of wealthy slave owners? You think Civil War was fought mainly due to a disagreement over slavery? You think the average confederate soldier is as bad as all of the other people listed? Was this listed compiled after home schooling via Google? Note that I did NOT say "here are some other dregs of humanity" or "more historical douchebags for your consideration." The list was merely for people to think about. I notice you didn't take exception to Robert Oppenheimer being on the list. And no, Google was not used at any time to make the list.

If not I probably wouldn't be so impressed. But either way, I would judge a person by their actions, not their AVs.

Kanker- Interesting list you came up with. I agree with Torley, I think how anyone would respond to a figure on that list has to do with their culture in part. It's hard to make a broad brush statement about what would offend "everyone" since a lot of us have differing worldviews about such things. I would be interested to know what the purpose of creating the AVs was, whether it was to educate, to upset people...and how I would respond to that person would probably be determined by the combination of those two things. It's hard to say what took place from reading an excerpt, to me the subject of scientific experimentation and outcomes *I forget the exact wording* would have been very upsetting. In that particular situation it would be more the conversation than the AV alone that likely would have bothered me. I'm interested in freedom of speech here, including creation of avatars, unless it falls under hate speech. Which can be a pretty fine line to determine.

From: Teddy Kennedy What, exactly, is your point? You seem to vacillate between 'nazi imagery should not be allowed' and 'I don't want to see it banned'. If you don't want to see it banned, I have nothing to argue about with you, because we're on the same team here. At least one of us here is confused. I haven't vacillated at all -- on the other hand, you're very quick to create strawmen out of my points. Here's a challenge for you: Find ONE statement I've made in this thread where I thought nazi imagery should be banned from SL. Just one. Go ahead. Take your time. I'll set my alarm and check back later.

From: Cindy Claveau From: Teddy Kennedy Come now, Cindy. You're smarter than this. Those who do not remember history etc etc. And tolerance isn't really something you should be only metering out sparingly. Once you start saying 'this shouldn't be tolerated' or 'that shouldn't be tolerated' it's very, very easy for that list of exceptions to get very, very long. No. There is a very firm, humane line that I think should be drawn this side of sanctioning genocide as policy. This isn't some mythical "slippery slope" the relative moralists like to pull out of their hats. Genocide is inexcusable and unforgiveable. My question is now this.... If you do not feel it should be tolerated, what other choice is there besides banning? The word "policy" in your statements makes me think TOS policy, is there another policy I should be thinking of?

From: Kanker Greenacre I wonder what anyone's reaction would be to the following avatars:
- Adolf Hitler Angry curse words. - Joseph Stalin Less curse words because not everyone knows who he was (even less knows that he looked like) - KKK Grand Wizard Angry curse words about racism. - Confederate soldier Angry curse words about racism. - Osama Bin Ladin yukyuk quotes about bombing the middle east and turning it into a parking lot. Racist insults. Angry curse words. - Charles Manson Most foks don't immediately recognize him (minus the nazi symbol tattooed on his forehead) - George Custer I laughed when I saw this one... he's a local hero here (3 roads, a bridge, 2 schools, and a ton of other stuff is named after him... oh, and the huge bronze statue downtown), but most other folks don't know who he was. Yeah, he sucked. a lot. - Robert Oppenheimer "Whos' Robert Oppenheimer?" -- response LF

From: Little Hailey My question is now this.... If you do not feel it should be tolerated, what other choice is there besides banning? The word "policy" in your statements makes me think TOS policy, is there another policy I should be thinking of? 1. I used the term "Policy" in reference to governmental policy - eg., Nazi, Serbian, Cambodian. That should have been clear in the context of how I used it, but perhaps it wasn't. 2. Since it is not OUR decision whether to ban certain content from SL, our own options are reduced to whether or not we make excuses and justifications for that sort of horribly bad taste. In this and in other threads, I've seen far too much moral relativism for my own taste -- an attitude that in this case has attempted to make excuses for a racial doctrine which butchered innocent women and children by the millions and urged its sycophants to butcher even more. Others may choose to 'tolerate' that inhumanity, but I will not.

Don't blame others for your poor reasoning skills. When did you and I have any say in LL's policies? When did it become forbidden to express OUR opinions here, even knowing that they don't matter much to how LL enforces the TOS? Further, why should that lack of power stop us from expressing how we feel about horrific ideologies that sponsor racism and genocide?

Cindy, I really feel that you're going back and forth on the issue again in so many words. Here's a question reguarding disires to... From: Cindy Claveau When did you and I have any say in LL's policies? When did it become forbidden to express OUR opinions here, even knowing that they don't matter much to how LL enforces the TOS? Further, why should that lack of power stop us from expressing how we feel about horrific ideologies that sponsor racism and genocide? I feel every member of SL has a say in LL policies, that is why we have suggestion threads and not votes. Whether LL choses to adopt out idea depends on how strongly they are desired by the community as a whole. If you wish to express how you feel about these events, it is unfair of you to say that those who don't agree with you should not be allowed to express their views.

I want vikings and viking imagery BANNED! They used to take slaves and rape and pillage.
I want Middle Easterners and Middle Eastern imagery BANNED! They still treat their women as chattel and were still trading slaves decades after the U.S. finally stopped.
I want White Americans and White American imagery BANNED! They took slaves and the "rest of the world" thinks they are meanies with food and money to spare.
I want English people and English imagery BANNED! They were mean to the Irish and Scots back in the day, and they imprisoned Ghandi.
I want Japan and Japanese Imagery BANNED! Rape of Nanking...and Puffy Ami Yumi
See...anyone can compile a list of nations or ideologies that they are offended by. I'm not jewish, but I do believe that the Holocaust happened and that it was ONE of the worst undertakings even accomplished on Earth...but....who bans Roman-era symbols? Those damn Romans fed my ancestors to lions and used them as slave labor...why does no one care about my feelings (kidding of course). And this is the problem in this "Rule of the Few" western society we are building. Everyone expects to be heard and everyone expects to live in a world that will never offend them. Another example is gay marriage. All they want is a legal union to enjoy the rights and priviledges shared by everyone else. But, there are groups out there that feel that if two people engage in an act that "They" find offensive, it must be stopped...because their delicate sensitivities are threatened. So, grow some freakin' skin. It's just nazi imagery, Hitler is not coming back....the fourth reich is not going to spawn from SL. LL should not be regulating morality by banning imagery, instead they need to devote efforts to stopping people who really offend via actions in game...
P.S. Now if someone in a Nazi uniform does ACT offensively, then they should be punished by LL for actions in-game violating the TOS (minus the nazi imagery ban stupidity)....Just like a person wearing the Stars and Stripes, the Hammer and Sickle, the Rising Sun, a Cross, a Star, a Crescent, or a Rainbow....or a whole bowl of Lucky Charms for that matter.
