By the way, Seth, I know you fancy yourself an expert, but you're dead wrong. Excuse me, I have a frilly elven ship to admire.

Hey, Nolan, two things.

In the spirit of the thread, I wasn't being serious. If you didn't see that, well, imagine how much I care.

As far as frilly elven ships, I've heard about that alt shit before; you're not the first who's accused me of being Donovan Galatea. I've been in contact with him through a couple of his SL friends, heard about things. If you want to think I'm his alt, go ahead. I've been mistaken for much worse. ;)

Besides, weren't you sanctioned recently for coming close to revealing real life matters about another resident? Getting into people's private business seems to be a habit you can't break.

As a resident of New Jersey, I can say we are still living under a government that think it is 100 years ago under mob rule, and a people who are ignorant apathetic fuckwads who don't know how to drive. We are sadly behind the curve....

I understand. My point was kind of "down the rabbit hole" thing," as in "who can say what's behind the curve and ahead of the curve, when the curve keeps flopping back and forth?"

Personally, I enjoy the hell out of California. I love it, and I'm frustrated by it. Which I think is a fairly common reaction.

Hugs. Apparently you need one. :)

It's all good Nolan. No malice on my part. It is ok if we have different opinions, that's one of the things that's great about America and what makes us so strong.

Paolo, you are right and Nolan I apologize for the comment. I know that you are intelligent and was just frustrated when in my opinion you did know what I was trying to say but wanted to argue. That is beside the point regarding making the comment I did. My apologies as I do try to keep discussions free from stuff like that and failed in that instance.

I have a frilly elven ship to admire, one I built. Thanks for all the unneccessary, hyberbolic, forgone conclusions though. :) I also appreciate your blessing me with your permission to have my own thoughts, even if you're mistaken about your place and importance in them.

And thanks for seeing and stating what actually happened with that incident, which by the way, was not all that "recent".

Glad to hear you weren't being serious, sometimes it's hard to tell with you, ya know?. Especially when the topic is not all that light-hearted.

No worries billy, I was simply trying to respect Juro's wishes. I am sorry as well.

I think it demonstrates that he is a bigot, plain and simple. To expand on your comment, if there was no racial diversity in this country, the same bigots would simply aim thier hate at some other, less easily identified group. Bigotry is not like a spigot - it doesn't just shut off with a twist of the handle.

Hahaha OMG do you realize what you just did? You helped coin a new term,

THE BIGOT SPIGOT

(Archie Bunker thanks you!)

Um.... Sure. Whatever you say.

It's not my fight. And what I'm trying to tell you, although you seem to be too dense to get it, is that I don't care. Think what you want, do what you want, be what you want. Since this is the third time you've taken personal offense at a post of mine that had absolutely nothing to do with you, I assume you've got some kind of issue with, um, someone, anyway.

Here's my issue: "you're mistaken about your place and importance" to me. Good quote. Yours, and you might remember it next time.

No, not upset at all. You're crediting yourself for having some tangible impact on my emotions, yet I am not in the least bit upset, although, you are certainly legitimizing that quote.

Have a nice evening, Seth.

You're probably right. I had already thought of the redirection of bigotry to other targets too, although technically my statement is still "accurate"-- there couldn't be any racism! (It would be called something else!)

"Eighty percent of pollution is caused by trees and plants" - Ronald Reagan

I was wondering why I could only find this quote on one page on the stupid-net. It appears the actual quote is:

"approximately 80% of our air pollution stems from hydrocarbons released by vegetation"

(I don't know where that other quote came from.)

Which sheds a little more light onto what he was getting at. I'm not here to argue the point, and actually I think what he was trying to get at might have some truth to it, but it was spoken in a very stupid way obviously.

If he is talking about the burning of The Coal, heavily compressed vegitative matter... than yeah he's right. But i'm not sure that an average person would know that from the wording of that quote. Sounds like he's saying trees give off hydrocarbons as part of their respiration, which is pretty false.

For more on the difference between Lies and Bullshit, I recommend On Bullshit, by Harry Frankfurt. It's pretty short since it was just an essay he did, but it's really interesting :D

I don't think that's what he was trying to talk about. It's not an easy topic to research with a simple stupidnet search it seems. But I think he was talking about something more along these lines:

"Plants emit a wide range of hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. For the United States, estimates range from 2/3 to over 80%1 of the hydrocarbons entering the atmosphere are derived from plants. In Germany during hot summer days also 2/3 of hydrocarbons emitted are of plant origin. The most abundant hydrocarbons are isoprene and monoterpenes. Isoprene reacts very rapidly with OH and ozone and in the presence of NOx can lead to ozone formation. Ozone is one of the biggest air pollution problems in the Eastern US, Germany and other countries which has been hard to reduce. The monoterpenes such as pinenes and limonene easily form particles that give rise to a natural haze. The degradation of natural vistas by air pollution and ist possible health impact is a significant air pollution concern. Other compounds are emitted from plants such as acetaldehyde; acetone, methanol, methyl butanol, and a family of hexenols. To study this phenomenon, we organized this international conference to bring together plant scientists, ecophysiologists, atmospheric chemists etc. to discuss plant emissions of hydrocarbons and its impact on the environment.

1Approximately 80% of our air pollution stems from hydrocarbons released by vegetation, so let's not go overboard in setting and enforcing tough emission standards from man-made sources." Ronald Reagan quoted in Sierra vol 65 (Sept/Oct) page 17 (1980)"

http://www.grc.uri.edu/programs/2002/biogen.htm

This hardly seems like a biased source--Queen's College , Oxford, UK.... of course it may be, I don't know much about that college. There's some other similar stuff out there (although hard to find and somewhat technical), but the references I did find that talked about this were pretty recent (last few years). Not sure what the hell it all means yet, but this is what the quote "stems" from...(HAHAHA PUN INTENDED!)

The Princeton Weekly Bulletin had this to say on the study:

From: someone
Noting President Ronald Reagan’s notorious 1980 reference to trees causing pollution (Reagan said: “Approximately 80 percent of our air pollution stems from hydrocarbons released by vegetation.”), the authors conclude: “The results reported here call for a wider recognition that an understanding of recent, current and anticipated changes in biogenic VOC emissions is necessary to guide future air-quality policy decisions; they do not provide any evidence that responsibility for air pollution can or should be shifted from humans to trees.”

To paraphrase, Reagan was blowing smoke out his ass, as usual. This was, after all, the man who appointed James "Pave the Planet for Jesus" Watt as Secretary of Interior, for crying out loud.

But what can you expect from those Hollywood types?
