While pandastrong is the king of pithy image posting, Schwanson is the king of illustrative image posting. Not as epic as the "Second Life is like a Pizza," but it saved me from being disappointed I even bothered to read this thread. Bravo. I think I understand what you are saying... I've seen the same thing on IRC networks, on MU*s...usually caused by an emotional reaction by someone who thinks that everyone on the system hates them. Why these people cannot just 'stop connecting' is beyond me, but they always end up requesting to be banned. The success of such requests is based on the specific system's guidelines. We had admins banning themselves on Wikipedia - it's against the rules now. _____________________

Oh, for pete's sake. If you don't want to play any more, go into the 'change password' utility on the SL website. When you go to enter the new password, close your eyes and randomly press several keys, or even press your fist into the keyboard. Then save the new password which you don't know.
Next, uninstall the SL client software and forget about all of us, and have a nice life. And if you're feeling the same way about your real life, seek counseling. P2 _____________________

Exactly my point...there are LOTS of ways to basically disable the account. But this iDream doesn't want to just disable the account...they want to be removed with no chance of return. And this usually results in everything getting deleted as well. Now...why someone would want this...my money would be riding on an emotional upheaval of some sort...seen the same farrrr too many times before. Someone 'betrayed' them or a group of people they thought were their frends turned out not to be. But, they can't just stop going...that's too easy and could lead to them actually coming back someday after the pain's gone.
Why wouldn't Linden Labs want to just ban them? Well, lets say you run a club or bar or some other kind of business where drama is more likely to happen. Someone has a bad experience there and comes up to you saying 'I want you to throw me out and never let me come back in here!' Now, the person in question has never caused trouble, STILL isn't causing trouble, and their money is as green as the next person's. Are you going to put them on the personae non-grata list or are you going to say 'Don't like the place, leave...but I'm not gonna stop you from coming back if you feel like it someday'. As for why they can't just delete it, iDream bought the long term account. Sure, iDream says now 'delete delete!', but you have to look at it from LL's viewpoint. They're emotional, they're reacting badly...but what happens if they come back before the year's over and start jumping up and down and threatening legal action or bad press because they can't get the rest of the year that they paid for? *shrugs* iDream just needs to uninstall, disable, whatever...and move on. All I see here is Drama with a capital D by someone striving for attention. Have fun. |

Sometimes drastic acts like this are a cry for attention, because the person needs it. It could be he/she's hurting inside, and doesn't know the proper way to express themselves. I have a small bit of experience of that from my childhood. I'm not qualified to deal with any of this though. However we have a lot of members in SL. Allow me to shout: IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE??? Seriously though if we have any professional counsellors maybe they could just have a small chat with him/her. No.... But theres a Lawyer in the house.. lol _____________________

Well, iDream got his wish-- last I looked he was no longer listed in Find. I still can't help wishing he would have talked to somebody about what was wrong... SL is such an amazing place, I hate to see anyone leave in this way. Oh well, guess sometimes people just don't want to be helped.

Not a Doctor!

But I play one sometimes in the Spa's Sizzlin Scener's competitions. ;-D Ok. My thoughts are that the poster quoted below is probably right about motivations. We act out sometimes in passive aggressive ways when we are socialized not to harm others directly but we still want them to feel our pain.
This would be a great passive aggressive response to a number of scenarios. I won't begin to guess whom it is the thread poster would like to share his pain with. Whether the intended target for the aggression is the community, Linden Labs or a love lost, the effect is the same. He shoots himself in the foot; the target gets a small amount of blood on the carpet. Sometimes drastic acts like this are a cry for attention, because the person needs it. It could be he/she's hurting inside, and doesn't know the proper way to express themselves. I have a small bit of experience of that from my childhood. The surest way to get perma banned is to directly and obviously threaten somebody with RL action of one kind or another.
You could set it up so that the person you threaten knows you (so will not call the police), but files an abuse report. Then, goodbye forever. No money back though. And you'd better really, really, really never want anything to do with SL ever ever again. Well, even that's not true actually. But it will certainly make it more difficult. _____________________

Just harass furries... they like it. When they call a linden, start shouting racist words, and claim you made an account on the teen grid. Then plop down an object that rezzes things until the sim crashes.
There you go. |

Huh, I thought I remembered that last sentence being struck from the most recent version. Let me check some back threads. Flip, you may be remembering this post: The Terms of Service say: You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password and are responsible for any harm resulting from your disclosure, or authorizing the disclosure of, your password or from use by any person of your password to gain access to your Account or Account ID. This means that you should realize that if you do disclose your password to someone, if something goes wrong it's your responsibility. We've seen enough instances of people sharing passwords and then losing everything to think that it's wise to keep your passwords confidential. Robin does not include the next two sentences following the passage she quoted At no time should you respond to an online request for a password. Linden will never ask for your password offline or online, except that you will be required to enter your password as part of the log-on process. You are not allowed to ever disclose your password to another person. Which includes the line: "You are not allowed to ever disclose your password to another person." This is a simple declarative statement that brooks no exception and includes no qualifying clauses. Trying to determine what is and is not allowed in interactions with Linden Research is problematical due to the following statement of meta-policy with regard to the company's obligation to abide by it's own stated rules and guidelines: " We do try to do what seems right and best, and not to hide behind policies or rules. ~ Robin Linden" _____________________
