Conduct Fines:
If a person abuses or violates the linden big six community standards and is proven to be guilty and are warned or banned they should automaticlly be fined like a traffic ticket. If they do not have the amount to pay the fine either with real world or Linden currency they are or can opt to be banned and each day linden will subtract so many dollars/linden to pay off their fine. Daily payback of a fine will also vary with the severity of their misconduct/offense. This will cut down on the amount of abuse, harassment, and repeat offenders. Fines will be based on the level of their misconduct and numbers of strikes.

Fines don't hit the pockets of rich players. This is a class-biased idea and just would give richer players yet another advantage over poorer.

Very interesting idea, but I think Hiro makes an excellent point.

Voted no, but might reconsider if the plan were well crafted. IMO, this approach would inevitably regurgitate the SL player government manifestos. My gag reflex is too weak to stomach another foray into that black hole...

you have nothing to fear of fines if you dont go around harassing other players, so it doesn't really matter what your class is does it?

I agree with Hiro. I once read that in ancient Rome there was a set fine for striking someone, payable to the strikee, so there was this rich fellow who would wander around randomly punching people while his slave followed with a bag of money and paid them the fine.

It's naieve to think that somehow rich players commit less offenses than poor ones. Akuma demonstrates the result fairly well.

Heh, yeah you are right. Then again just like traffic fines in RL it has larger implicatiuons than just the $100 fine. Get enought $100 fines and they take away your licence. The rich can end up just as banned as the poor.

True enough, but the suspending / banning is already in place. That's the part that has the real bite, and I don't see sense in adding something to it that doesn't have bite, and that isn't fair.

I never said the rich commit less than the poor, however I did say you have nothing to fear if you aren't commiting the crime... Its not unfair to anyone..it only punishes those who would deserve it...and who's to say it would be a set fee? you could always use % fines if you're worried about that...

In addition, there is no part of this proposal that says anything about taking out suspension and bans...

Its not much of a punishment its ment to discourage people from breaking the big six. Linden can set ban lengths how they see fit but in addtion a fine will effect the majoirty who break the rules who are not the rich. The rich avoid breaking rules because they have so much invest in the game.

Im sorry but I can speak from experience all my greif is from small non-rich player/groups sometimes on alts who think they can get away with breaking the big 6 with a slap on the wrist.

How about if they're made to wear an attachment for a week that let's everyone force them to do very embarassing things on command. "Dance griefer! Dance!"

Also a lot of the people who harass players and attack clubs or events, use alt accounts because they dont want their main to be penalized. They don't care about losing a 10$ basic account because it has no importance to them. However if punishment carried the weight of a fine penalty, it would be much more effective in discouraging players from harassing. I am not saying this would stop all harassment, because it wont. But it WOULD kill a large majority of it.

But it punishes unequally.

If your goal is to add more reason for people not to break the big six, why not simply enforce the current punishments more strictly?

And the rich don't avoid breaking rules more than poor. They're just generally craftier at avoiding being caught.

Think about it...What is a suspension or a ban to someone who has 3-4 alts? It doesn't really offer a lot of discouragement... Not to mention linden cant really prove that someone using multiple accounts is the same person harassing... People look at harassing online as an OK thing because there are no Real World reprecussions. But if there was a fine or ticket enforced, it would be a hell of a wakeup call to them.

Did you even read the thread?

Just because something is mostly effective doesn't mean it's a good idea. Justice needs to be equal.

What's effective is when a person can't log on, and gets an email that says, "We've suspended you for 3 days. (Do this again and we let loose Samuel L. Jackson on your ass!)"

Suspending and banning (when enforced) not only kills a large majority of griefing, but the entirety. Why settle for an incomplete punishment system?

Somehow, "With Liberty and Justice for A Large Majority" doesn't have the same ring as "all".

Because Linden is looking for some extra drains for their sink this can help that in addtion reduce the amount of grief complaints.

Do you have any idea how many "grief" reports linden has to filter thru in a given day? Much less then try to figure out how much if it is bs drama versus a legit complaint. Ontop of that a lot of the people who do grief are repeat offenders. Perfect example is Ballermomo aka Sexypimp. He had over 15 accounts banned, he crashed sims, he harassed players, he was rude to lindens. But he did it all on alts, and linden had no way to prove it was him. So he got away with it. He got away with it for 4 months before The Herald got an interview with him confessing all his sins. At which point his IP was banned. However if he had not come out and said it on his account what he had done they would never have had enough proof to stop him.

However had he been fined each time he commited a crime, he would have reconsidered commiting them to begin with.

In that case, why doesn't LL just drain all money from people last name Fairplay?

Because it's not fair to all players.

Done. Stop. Please. Think before posting.

Bull.

He lost money everytime an account was banned, at the very least $10US (which is 2500L). Further, he didn't seem to mind the money on his alts (500L to start, remember?) being removed from his use, did he?

Fines would have just set his L$ to 0 and he would have continued.

What does that have to do with anything? This idea is to target "SL Criminals" who purposely seek out to harass other players and make SL no fun for anyone. maybe you should take your own advice and think before posting. This is an open debate, if you cannot come up with a better comment to defend your position without getting insulting then maybe you should move on to another thread. Please don't make this a personal attack, as it is unprofessional and makes you look rather childish. If you can't handle the heat then go home. I respect the fact that you are entitled to your opinions, but I also reserve the right to defend my position on this topic.

Right on Hiro. Very true and often overlooked class bias. I have some discomfort with this in the game. Balanced with the freedoms you have as opposed to RL, it is a small tradeoff.
