From: Cocoanut Koala a message saying when you log on, the grid is up, but it may take a few hours to stabilize, would help very much, especially for new players. And yet everyone could still get in "early." Great idea, Coco! I think with something like this, the more communication new residents can readily consume the better.

Okay, so LL puts in a message like "The grid may be unstable / all functions may not be available after an update" with the next update. Any bets on how many minutes will pass before someone posts here complaining that that is a clear admission that they've been sold a bill of goods, they're paying to beta test, etc etc? Grim humor aside, it may not be a bad idea. I'm just glad I don't have to come up with wording that will reassure some users without provoking others.

From: Hank Ramos Careful. Bitch too much about the "bringing up the grid" issues that occur a few hours after opening SL for logins, and the Lindens will just keep us all out until the grid stabilizes.
Your choice:
1. No access until the grid is 100% up. 2. Partial grid access as soon as possible. i vote on option 2

From: Cocoanut Koala *snip* If so, it might help a lot (if they aren't already doing this) to put a message that says, "TP's and other things (whatever) will be unstable for the first few hours or so until the load fixes it." Or whatever the right words would be. coco Agreed... communication isn't hard to do but there's always a reason why it can't be done. I've only been here a short time and I would prefer informational messages like this so I don't have to spend time searching forums for important updates. I am already sick of the recycled "Tips" and would much rather hear about why I can't TP or see textures on 25% of the items in game. The fact that there was no information about a patch or downtime anywhere on the main website and you need to read forums to find out why your game suddenly stops working is deplorable.

From: Dianne Mechanique Oh come on!
ELEVEN MINUTES after you updated, you posted this.
What kind of exhaustive testing have you done in the ELEVEN minutes SL has been available to you today?
Do you habitually complain about movies after seeing the first few seconds of the titles?
Do you throw out a four course meal when you burn your mouth on the first bite?
. OK, 9 attempted TPs. 5 attempted ROAMS and three logs in those 11 minutes. ALL failed. And I needed to get somewhere immediately to settle a land purchase. The problems persisted for at least 6 hours, when I finally gave up in disgust and logged off for the night. And WHERE did I say I exhaustively tested the system? Paying SIM level tier I expect rather better service than this!

From: Enabran Templar He's new, though. I bet it seems like the end of the world. SHE thankyou very much! And been through enough 'updates' to know this was outstandingly bad. If I'd lost the land deal I was attempting to conclude it would have been 'end of the world' too... *stomps off sulking horribly*

Welcome to planet earth. Go pay $100/month to Blizzard and see what that gets you in WoW. When the TOS gaurantees five 9's of uptime, then you can complain. Til then, stop trolling our forums... please Useless Update, blah. I for one, want to thank the Lindens for many hours coding, unwaivering committment to stabilizing the grid.

From: Lecktor Hannibal OH MY YES ! Lindens hearken up to this ASAP Very funny... However it seems to me that a lot of the problems with SL centre on the fact that LL seem to think that charging lots of money and providing poor service is a viable business model - it isn't!

You say you've been here long enough for several updates? I find this hard to believe with this post. This happens all the time with an update and is nothing to scream on about in the boards. You pay for increased land and prim ownership not an upper level of customer service. That comment was very condescending and insulting to us peons.

No I said you were trolling. That's what posting a topic headline "Totally USELESS update!" is called. A subject that isn't trolling would be something like "Teleport Problems since Update". From: Doc Nielsen At least TRY and remember some of us are pating substantial sums for the pleasure of putting up with this sort of thing...
Why would you assume I'm not one of them? I am well versed in investing in IT infrastructure. I have two dedicated servers outside of SL, one gaurantees five 9's the other doesn't. I would only ever complain to the service who gaurantees uptime. I also have quite a bit of land in SL, tons of money has gone through GOM, and every second is precious to me cause I'm in the 2005 SL Game developers contest, and we only have 19 days left. All I was saying is relax... there are reasons for the update, reasons for the no teleporting in the first 11 minutes, and reasons why the SL TOS doesn't gaurantee five 9's. Read the fine print before you invest your money if that's what your worried about.

From: Cocoanut Koala But - this game is not in beta testing. Thank You. I needed a good laugh this morning. From: Doc Nielsen Under the circumstances, on this particular occasion, from my point of view it would have been a LOT better if they'd waited for things to stabalise before allowing access... Do you think this type of circumstance occurs regularly enough to warrant them denying us access until The Grid is settled? Seriously, I suppose they might listen if they think the bulk of us would rather wait. There will always be a flood of people logging into The Grid post update though. Perhaps they should implement delays based on our monthly billing. Full sims and higher can log in over the next half-hour, then half sims, then quarters oh and basics can just wait til tomorrow if that'll be okay with everybody.

I like having even limited access to the grid. It helps me IM with team members and coordinate projects, even when we can't tp.

Why even bother letting us login at all? That would be the ultimate update... From: Linden Lab Due to the nature of Second Life 2.0, your computer isn't cool enough to log in. Feel free to keep paying us money, we'll hold your land, and in a few years, when you get a quad-core chip in that pocket calculator you call a PC, we'll talk

Who do those Lindens think they are deciding on "toc" without any input from us? I am tired of my freedoms being limited in this way! .

. Yes, indeed. This was by far the most painless update in recent memory. SL lost track of my avatar once or twice, but it wasn't a big deal. The volley of updates that were aimed at putting a software band-aid on the asset server gave us a whole lot more trouble. I remember scores of people couldn't even log in for up to eight hours after the grid re-opened.
