I'm not given to profanity, but this latest update is really the absolute fucking limit!
NO TP!
AND I can't even ROAM because I'm crashingh at every other SIM border!
Ever heard of TESTING before using Philip? Or is that too bloody simple for you and your geeks?
Stop wasting time fiddling with auctions and tier and breaking the economy and get on with your job! Making the infrastructure WORK!
That's what I wrote after the LAST update - and a number of people jumped on me for daring to criticise LL after they did such a GOOD job... Well here we jolly well go again!
Even less notice than before! Well, I'm off to bed and won't be back for 18 hours, so I won't get frustrated by the post update shambles - but I won't be returning with any expectation of improvement. In fact the 'improvements' wreaked by that last update have pushed me very close to just giving up. If this one doesn't produce some REAL improvements I may very well do just that - enough is enough!

Not to rain on your rant or anything, because well, I agree for the most part, but whenever the grid is taken down completely and comes back up, it can often take several hours or more for things to fully settle. Unfortunately, it seems the only way to get it to settle is for people just to start using it, otherwise they could just close the damn thing for half a day like World of Warcraft does.

Stop wasting time fiddling with auctions and tier and breaking the economy and get on with your job! Making the infrastructure WORK! Oh come on! ELEVEN MINUTES after you updated, you posted this. What kind of exhaustive testing have you done in the ELEVEN minutes SL has been available to you today? Do you habitually complain about movies after seeing the first few seconds of the titles? Do you throw out a four course meal when you burn your mouth on the first bite? .

It is very normal, which is why I never understand the rush to get back in...as you will have tp problem, changing clothes, etc...
So I usually download the update, install it, but only go in to look, as I know I can't tp, or do much until later in the evening, or next day...then log and go out for supper, look at the sky, feel the breeze, etc...
So very normal..don't like it, but been this way for most updates, so normal...

I agree it's monumentally frustrating, but in some ways - it's one of the prices we pay for the luxury of playing such a cutting-edge 'game'. Cris is absolutely right - just about every time they take the grid down - coming back up is painful at best. Things don't usually 'settle' until the next day - or in a worst case scenerio - the next patch. (Which typically if it's that bad, a patch is hurried along fairly quickly). I think it is helpful to let Linden know you're unhappy - they run a buisness, and its important to have a pulse on your customers. But insulting them probably won't motivate them to fix things any faster. In fact, if I was just a grid-monkey reading that - about all it'd motivate me to do is spit in your soup.

I suppose LL will have to start adding a couple of hours to the updates so the sims and asset system can reload and settle with out people scrambling to teleport and build and search through their inventories. The same pathetic cries echo the forums every damn time they reboot the grid making it seem like we just don't have the mental capacity to understand what's happening.
There's already another poster screaming that teleports are "broken." If we can't be any more patient with an update than this, maybe they should just schedule downtime for twenty-four hours. They could call it "Testing Time." Nothing's actually "broken" of course. But that point seems lost on most of us.

Careful. Bitch too much about the "bringing up the grid" issues that occur a few hours after opening SL for logins, and the Lindens will just keep us all out until the grid stabilizes.
Your choice:
1. No access until the grid is 100% up. 2. Partial grid access as soon as possible.

Though when I read Doc's post I wondered if my husband had an alt I didn't know about - he gets frustrated about the same things. I understand the frustration. OTOH - I would rather be a QA tester in world than a user out of world waiting for Lindens to stabalize things so that I get in. .

In my last beta test the game was down FOR A WEEK. No access at all or if you did get access it was for 30 minutes until someone managed to crash the server, find a showstopper, or game needed rebooting. The game was maybe...1/10th the size of SL to boot. just think about that for a minute before you scream about the problems here.

But - this game is not in beta testing. Just keeping it down longer, though, I don't get the idea that would help any. It seems that at a certain point, there is nothing they can do by themselves, that the only thing which fixes it further is for people to come in and put the load on it. Am I right? If so, it might help a lot (if they aren't already doing this) to put a message that says, "TP's and other things (whatever) will be unstable for the first few hours or so until the load fixes it." Or whatever the right words would be. coco

If they kept it down longer, we'd complain about the downtime. We do anyway. I had some very slow uploads right after the patch, but a short time later, everything was fine. I know things will be wonky right after a patch, and especially after a major update. I don't mind the updates unless it breaks something. (Then I bitch to Kona and expect him to snap his fingers and fix everything!)

From: Cocoanut Koala But - this game is not in beta testing. Not a beta test but same mentality. People want it YESTURDAY...not now..not tommarrow. Yes I generalize but that is a loud majority.

Or whatever the right words would be. coco When they bring the grid back up, all of the sims (they are individual computers) have to "cache" all of the objects, textures, sounds, etc for items located on that server. That helps distribute the load on the main database server(aka Asset Server). However, this initial caching puts a tremendous strain on the asset server. You can be inworld during this process (which takes a couple of hours to complete), but your experience won't be like usual. If they just kept us all out so that this process could finish, then there would be few problems. However, everyone would be upset that SL was down, and how beta it was because of it.

OK, I see. In that case - a message saying when you log on, the grid is up, but it may take a few hours to stabilize, would help very much, especially for new players. And yet everyone could still get in "early." Especially when we start getting those free membership members, especially since there is an update scheduled for some time around in there. It would just be good to always put this in the message, for anyone who is new. coco

Second Life Release Notes 6.1.9.
- Changed icon to slightly lighter shade of green. - Increassed 'fuzzy dissapation' on hair edges. - Clicking sound changed from a 'tac' to more of a slightly lower sounding 'toc' - changed opacity of UI shadow by .001%
Now THAT would be a useless update.

There's often not even information shared by Linden Lab regarding grid issues, their causes and resolution timeframe. A little "We know things are screwy right now, bear with us," goes a long way.
