Hmm, I realize that this is just a runaway flame thread, but I'm still curious why people are so up in arms about the so-called "Barbie and Ken" culture in SL. I'm sure part of the problem is that I'm just a bit dense. For example, in RL I still haven't been albe to figure out why so many people are opposed to gay marriage. *shrug* I'm pretty much a "Barbie and Ken" type player and I was just wondering how I have harmed you and what I can do to prevent it in the future. List of things I was thinking about: -I go to clubs to hear new music and meet new people. I hate the lag they generate. Contests and money balls are irrelevant to my choice of where to go because I never win anyway. -I've never played any of the *ingo games, but I know many people who do. They enjoy them very much and I think that is a good thing. -I have done cyber and used animation balls *gasp* Hey, its fun. -I've built things and learned basic scripting, but i've never sold anything I made. I know many people who've never built anything complex and the majority of people I know have never scripted. I don't think there is anything wrong with them, in fact they are mostly great people. -All my purchases are supported by my stipend. I've never bought $L with real money. The reduction in stipend just means I buy less than I used to, but it hasn't been a problem, since hanging out and talking to people is what I do most of the time anyway. I'm just curious because the opinions I see posted on the boards bear no resemblace to my experience in the game (i.e. friendly people having a good time without a lot of angst). oh, and I only read the boards on my lunch hour at work and usually only for entertainment purposes.

I think that's one of the *great* things about SL - that it has a tendency to encourage people who (ordinarily) would never have had a reason to learn how to build or script.... to create In May of 2004, I would have been hard pressed to explain the difference between Photoshop and Poser. 3D modeling meant wearing red & blue glasses and walking down a fashion runway. And scripting - a DOS batch file was my limit. A year later, I'm still by no means an expert on anything. But I'm proud of what I can accomplish with Photoshop - and my LSL skills improve every day. I'm no Lordfly - but I can build a structure that's relatively easy on the eyes. I'm not much of a consumer anymore - because I've reached a point where a majority of the things I need I create myself. The things I can't, I rarely have difficulty finding a more capable friend willing to help out, and teach me in the process. Folks who come to SL may not start out with the intention of being creative -- but exposure to others who are seems to be an amazing motivator to learn

Tso/sl

I am one of those ex-TSO'ers. I don't play anymore, though still have one account because for nostalgic purposes can't get rid of an old sim.
I came to SL with a TSO mind because, that is what I was used to. When I asked what does a person do in SL, I was answered with "anything you want". WHAT?!?! I was in shock, confusion set it, sweaty palms. "You mean we can create and do anything? Or close to it?" You mean we can have 3 or 4 floors to our home? and in the air???! We can buy clothes and, shock, interchange every single aspect of it? We don't have to decide between the 60 or so preset clothes, with shoes attached? We can have jewelry? I don't have to stop and pee/eat/sleep/shower every 45 minutes?!?!?
SL is not TSO, yes some of us come with that mindframe, but we soon step out of the four side slightly on an angle box and realize that SL is what we make of it-mafia, techies, barbie/ken alike. It seems as in TSO no one is truly ever happy with the intellligence and creativity of those that create these MMORPG or what have you..I'm just playing the game the way I want and try not to destory others way of playing.

marilyn It's true. I looked up her skirt. She is a barbie. But the pictures I took are only for personal use, sorry. Someone should to a barbie and ken texture on a skin. Get a good pic of them. Would be fun to walk around with a Ken face and body. Oh wait..nevermind...

From: Cindy Claveau I own a house, and I just added another parcel of land to the front yard where I'll place my hot tub, and I'm planning on building a large party patio with furniture and possibly a pool with floatie poseballs. I plan to invite my friends over, which will include scripters, artists, creators, designers, attorneys and mathematicians ... we're going to confuse the hell out of the lot of you by playing "Blobbie and Kern" for an evening, followed by a massive math orgy in my living room. We will do pornographic, disgusting things with binomial equations. I may even start a new group: "The Evil Barbies of Death". Ph3ar us! You know I love it when you talk like that, Cin. ... and don't rely on the HA site to send my invitation... Stan

SL is WAY BETTER than TSO. Some of the players might not get what it's about or play it like TSO, but that doesn't make the GAME like it.
