I spoke to Michael on the phone this afternoon, and he made it very clear to me that Linden Lab plans on siding with the sandbox griefers on the trademark issue. I think the way he worded it was that "if a resident is feeling spiteful" that it's within their right to interfere with content creators.

He acknowledged that LL's position on trademark issues is "inconsistent," but I didn't even go down that road on the phone, nor am I here. I am way past done arguing about LL's policies, priorities, company direction, or whatever.

Bottom line is, buy a Cereal Milk Motorsports car while you can, because as soon as I get back from Quebec and have access to my home PC again, I am voluntarily removing them from Second Life. Not adjusting the logos or anything of that sort. Not even selling them to you privately if you ask.

It's just not worth my time anymore to deal in SL content while every party concerned gives me as much bullshit about it as possible. Especially now that my RL salary completely dwarfs what I make on GOM.

Gone are the days when William Beckett stood on the front page of secondlife.com leaning against his Ferrari, I guess.

I don't understand why you don't just change the logo around, alter a spoiler here and there, and keep on truckin. Why do you feel you have to toss the whole business out the window because of this?

I was cheering him on with the whole trademark thing.....until there. Violating Trademark to make a salary is wrong. I personally would understand if it paid for tier and maybe a cup of joe once in a while. *shakes head*

But then given that the title of this thread is a slight rewording of a line attributed to an arrogant aristocrat (whether Marie Antoinette or another), and given some of the comments that seemed to me to fit the condescending attitude implied by that title, I also won't lose any sleep. Someone will fill the void.

I dunno what the fuss is about.. there are many people in SL that have had successful runs of making items and doing a play on words for their products..

'Primcrafters' glasses springs to mind...

And many other highly successful makers of things like vehicles (FairChang for instance) that don't even need to go there..

If I was a trademark/copyright owner, and someone parodied my work, I wouldn't mind.

If I was a trademark/copyright owner, and someone made a replica of my work, I would be upset if they manipulated the logo in the vein of parody, when the intent was clearly replication. (Well, I wouldn't be upset... the "hypothetical panda as a trademark/copyright owner" would be). To me that doesn't show the respect that utilizing a logo in replica design does.

In Cereal's case, he did make money from from his replicas. That is wrong, and specific to his situation.

However, I find the whole SFTU U STEELER THEIF GO CRIE 2 MOMMY attitude really gross. As well as the ability inherent in LL's lack of proactive enforcement for personal disputes to lead to trademark witchhunting.

Enthusiasts all over the world make replicas out of clay, matchsticks, legos, etc.

cereal, you know where i come down on the logos/brand thing but I still think you do quality work. If you are so frustrated that you are going to toss everything out the window, so be it, no ones gonna stop you, but there is no reason why you can't sell a Cereal Motorsports rather than a (insert brand here).

There is no clothing designer that I am aware of that has decided to circumvent building their own brand by marketing their stuff as "Giorgio Armani" clothes. They may take design ideas from the market, but you can take design ideas for your cars as well. They build their own brand, and you can build your own brand.

I mean what? 99% of the work you have put in to date would be retained, and you'd have to change 1%. I'm having a hard time relating to your anger.
