I think that people are reacting to a "screw all y'all for not appreciating my contribution to SL" from someone who is clearly wrong and can't or won't cop to it.
Interesting that you highlighted "voluntary" as LL will zap them if he doesn't - so it is sort of disingenuous to boot. The forum regulars tend to come down hard on clearly mistaken grandstanders with an attitude.

Actually, I think a lot of this is "What the heck are you worried about, just change the brand to your own !?"

From: Euterpe Roo (emphasis mine) I have read and re-read this thread in an attempt to find what lies at its heart. Any insight? Just read the posts by pandastrong Fairplay, and give the posts by Malachai Petunia a cursory glance. Ignore all others!

From: Forseti Svarog I doubt you would find Philip, or a board member of Linden Lab, talking about IP quite so frivolously -- but then, they would view financially draining lawsuits more seriously. But then, who knows... December, 2003 - Page 1April, 2005 - Page 3Here are a couple of wholly non-frivolous IP statements posted by Philip. Now you know.

Ignore all others! Now I am all hypnotized. I thank you for your insight, Mal. I was having trouble finding the issue at the core of this one. I have seen a few threads like this one; however, my experience is very limited. (Note to panda: you had best be careful; Mal will neg rate you to the fifth circle of hell where you can hang out with the "Irascible and the Sullen" for all of eternity. [I just sounded like Bob Barker for a moment there.]. )

From: Jeffrey Gomez Before this thread goes spiralling into the anals of Locked Threads, I'd like everyone to stop for just a moment and have a look at what is going on, again, in this thread. heheh ... dare I even ask what that would be like? ewwww an·nals Audio pronunciation of "annals" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (nlz) pl.n. 1. A chronological record of the events of successive years. 2. A descriptive account or record; a history: “the short and simple annals of the poor” (Thomas Gray). 3. A periodical journal in which the records and reports of a learned field are compiled.

have the last laugh on the subject and set the cars as free to copy and drop them all over the place...
you know, on this whole trademark issue, I really think it's kinda funny... I use the UPS logo on a few items I have made... I work for UPS and I have talked to some of the uppity upps there and mentioned the whole second life thing to them... even told them (a few of them in marketing) that I used the UPS logo (as well as a few others) and they got a huge laugh out of it... they could really give two shits and said that the top people would say the same and give the same amount of shits even if I (or anyone else) was making all kinds of ingame cash using their logo...
I really hope someone comes along and tells me to remove my stuff using the UPS logo... I look forward to telling them "NO!"

From: someone ...I really hope someone comes along and tells me to remove my stuff using the UPS logo... I look forward to telling them "NO!" Then I think that you can look forward to having them removed for you immediately after saying "NO!". Having verbal "yeah they would probably think it okay" is utterly different than explicit permission from UPS, Inc. Trademarks have to be aggressively protected or they become invalid. Whatever UPS paid for their logo design is probably dwarfed by repainting 88,000 vehicles, uniforms, signage, and every other thing in the company. That they would want to risk losing their mark because of your use of it is - put bluntly - ludicrous. Let me repeat that in case you are hard of reading. Trademarks need to be aggresively protected by their holders at risk of losing their claim to the mark. You might be able to slide by today, but you just admitted to trademark violation in a thread where people are tossing around suspicions of players narc'ing other players out. Personally, I don't care, but all your armchair legalistic reasoning doesn't make this right nor defensible.

I negged you in categories that haven't even been implemented yet.
That caused my first forum-related LOL, and now my office mates are looking over and asking if I'm reading the Onion again, and what the hell do I tell them? PS: Note, pandastrong, that it was Mal's concept I was laughing at, not the besmirching of *you*, specifically.
