From: Noh Rinkitink A thought occurred to me while at work today.
For the sake of argument, let's say that there was an ultimately successful movement to impeach and convict (two totally seperate stages) Bush Jr. Would it make any of you who've voiced dislike of the current president any happier to have Cheney in office, as next in line in presidential succession (like Ford was for Nixon, when the latter resigned in 1974)?
It's possible I'm just missing it, but it does seem to be something that doesn't get much discussion by those believing Bush has committed impeachable offenses. Nothing says they can't both be impeached --and they both should.

From: Kendra Bancroft Nothing says they can't both be impeached --and they both should. If anyone gets impeached or convicted, it will most likely be Cheney first. Cheney has an even lower approval rating than the President. He's been linked to the leaking of the identity of a CIA operative to the press (by his own ex-Chief of staff). His little hunting incident doesn't make him look too good either.

Fitzgerald has already implicated Cheney as playing a core role in the matter of Karl Rove's impending indictment. Frankly I doubt whether Cheney or Bush will finish their terms at this point. The big question now should be will it be President Hastert? Or President Pelosi?

From: Kendra Bancroft Just like Nixon --it will be the Republicans who finally bring him down.
On a side note I hope every Democratic candidate for office runs on Impeaching Bush as their main platform plank -They'll sweep into office. Not if they want to craft a government of moderates, including Republicans.

From: Surreal Farber Not if they want to craft a government of moderates, including Republicans. First they'd need to actually want to do so, and there's no supporting evidence for that notion. In the current political climate, pretty much every party with any national name-recognition at all is controlled by its extremists, none of whom give a damn about compromise unless "compromise" is defined as "the other side agreeing with me". IMO, that is what's a real threat to the US continuing as a nation, not what any one particular president can or will do.

From: Kendra Bancroft The big question now should be will it be President Hastert? Or President Pelosi? As Speaker of the House, Hastert would be next in line for having his mailing address read "1600 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington DC", working with the hypothetical of Bush and Cheney both being impeached (an even more remote possibility than either alone, but for the sake of discussion I'll set that aside), and nothing like the situation with Nixon (Agnew resigning as VP in 1973, then Ford being appointed VP under provisions of the 25th Amendment, taking over the POTUS slot after Nixon resigns in 1974) occurs. And for the curious, following House Speaker comes the Senate's President Pro Tempore (appointed as President of the Senate if the VP is taken out of the picture, by death, impeachment, resignation, or promotion to POTUS) as next in line of succession to POTUS, then working down through the various cabinet heads, in the following order: Secretary of State Secretary of the Treasury Secretary of Defense Attorney General Secretary of the Interior Secretary of Agriculture Secretary of Commerce Secretary of Labor Secretary of Health & Human Services Secretary of Housing & Urban Development Secretary of Transportation Secretary of Energy Secretary of Education Secretary of Veterans’ Affairs Secretary of Homeland Security

Der.

Or not.
Personally, I would be curious as to the results of a national poll with the questions a) "Do you think the President should be impeached?", b) "Do you think the Vice President should be impeached?", and c) "Do you think both the President and Vice President should be impeached?".
I suspect the numbers for any of the above options (and especially the third) would be rather lower than the 71% of those polled who are to some degree dissatisfied with Bush Jr's performance as President.

From: Champie Jack Do you think it's a lie? Well, I did hear of a report from British intelligence which said that although Iran was capable of enriching uranium to the extent that it would work in a reactor, it would be at least a decade before they were able to enrich it to the extent that would be required by a nuclear weapon. So, yes, I do.
