Mike Malloy is a good friend of yours? Please tell him he has an avid fan! I caught him when they had him standing in for Randi Rhodes and then got hooked. :)

yayyy! Yes I've know Mike for about 6 years now, easily one of the most intelligent passionate men I've ever come across - and his little Baby Molly is the cutest baby on god's green earth

Listeners to the show might know me as his "Brooklyn Bureau-Chief" ;)

I listen to Randi's show everyday as well :) They are both incredible.

What is your point?

I wanted to tell my side of it.

My last posting on this subject. Calling the United States a Fasist State is STUPID. If this were true most of you would already be under arrest and in a camp along with your families. Just because your political party lost is no reason for name calling! Get over it!

My point was you were complaining about political posts. This is an off-topic forum, which would include politics and anything else people want to talk about. If you are upset about political threads, then I would suggest either a) not reading them b) sticking to other forums, such as General, which are actually about SL.

Green Day expresses it pretty well with "Holiday"

-Ghoti

I agree. When I actually sat down one day with the lyrics to the "American Idiot" CD in hand while listening to the songs, I found myself feeling incredibly angry, sad and defiant but oddly empowered. I don't know why I feel empowered, maybe it's just because I don't feel so alone in my anger anymore....Green Day put into words how I've been feeling for the last several years.

Oh and here's a Bush quote, just for you, Ghoti.... ;)

I don't know about anyone else, but on my way out of the US as fast as possible. I want to be somewhere that has less of a chance of provoking people to blow me up or gas me in the next few decades. I regret every second I lugged around 100+ pounds for this nation. Mortars are not light. They need to come up with a new name for light infantry. Wish I did it all for someone else. Unfortunately, I didn't realize 9/11 would happen until my first day of basic training on 9/11. *shakes head* Seemed like we were right at first until it became an excuse to take this country down a dangerous path. Now I'm free of the U.S. military. My finances are coming together. Good bye all. Good luck with the future your president has chosen for you.

This thread has been flagged for ... umm ... well, since Politics is always a heated topic, it's expected tempers will rise and nostrils will flare. Please keep the debate civil and refrain from making it personal and stoop down to name-calling.

Gawd, can't believe I said that. But yeah.

Funny pics. :p

I am so SICK or seeing political threads, then looking outside of my house and in all directions are those signs. :(

I play SL to get away from this political crap. Why cant you post it on a political Blog or BBS? Calling each other names is not going to convert anyone to your cause and it makes for a hostile enviroment as well. You loose more support than you gain in the long run. No wonder so few people vote in America.

Again, take it Out of SL!

I'm sick of seeing complaints about threads in the forums. Why can't you people start a complaint blog? Complaining isn't going to keep people from posting political opinions. You loose more support complaining about being forced to read something you don't like when every literate adult on earth has the ability to choose what he or she reads. Maybe if the Japanese were more vocal about politics their leaders wouldn't feel secure in glorifying war criminals.

I heard his comments. They were nothing new. According to the NYT article that broke the story, the NSA has been monitoring as many as 500 people at a time. That means thousands of people have had their calls monitored. Gonzales justifies the spying with the same BS line about only monitoring people that are being called by known Al Qaeda operatives or those tied to Al Qaeda.

Soooo... Al Qaeda is calling thousands of people in the US. Riiiiiigggghhhhtttt... and I'm Mary, Queen of Scots. Pleased to meet you.

I don't know, Chip. Putting it more in context I don't see a problem:

From: someone
While many details about the program remain secret, officials familiar with it say the N.S.A. eavesdrops without warrants on up to 500 people in the United States at any given time. The list changes as some names are added and others dropped, so the number monitored in this country may have reached into the thousands since the program began, several officials said. Overseas, about 5,000 to 7,000 people suspected of terrorist ties are monitored at one time, according to those officials.

So I think saying "Al Qaeda is calling thousands of people in the US" is a very misleading statement. Sure, alot of those 1,000's outside the country being monitored probably aren't very connected to real terrorists (just a guess), but the whole point of doing this kind of surveillance is because of such uncertainty isn't it?

If you're monitoring numbers like that I could see occassional instances where you'd have up to 500 "conversations" going on at once during peak times, right? Out of who knows how many communications going on in total, I'm sure that numbers in the thousands IS a small concentrated effort.

I was more referring to the legal arguments that he was making in his speech than anything else, though.

I was really concerned about this news when I first heard about it, because it did sound like laws were being broken, and so on, the way it was first reported. But I think at the very least there's significant doubt cast on the "illegality" of the program at this point.

Eh, well I guess I'd be "sick" of barely on-topic "Bush hater propaganda insults" and strange interpretations of the president's exressions/personality that show up in threads like this--if I really cared. So I suppose if someone cares it all makes sense..

Might as well add: It's funny how those interpretations work though, some people see arrogance and smugness where others see confidence and certainty. (Two traits which any politician knows are essential to stay popular.) Which I guess means that Bush is pretty good at seeming confident. Arrogant is what conservatives call Kerry and Senator Clinton...funny how words work. I guess being called arrogant is proof you're a good politician.

This topic is valid for the "Off-Topic" forum, and political debates can be heated, but please refrain from personally attacking others. The only purpose that serves is to get an otherwise interesting debate closed. So disagree politely please. :)

well ... not being American I won't enter the debat ... I just wanted to say that I saw yesterday in a "best of" a little film showing US soldiers in Iraq discussing just to point out that it's not partial I must add that it wasn't a french TV channel. at the end of the movie one of the soldiers said something that I found kinda funny :

"- F..k Bush made us lose all our friends, the rest of the world hate us.
- If france was declaring war to us all the east side of the world would join them I'm sure.
- F..k France
- At least english like us
- No only one does and it's because Bush pay him."

Sound quite realistic to me doesn't it ? :p

Don't know if anyone had brought this up yet. But George Bush did not actually win the election in 2000. If you remember they had the issue with the hanging chads and all that bullshit, and his brother being the govoner or Flordia makes it really easy to come out ontop of those recounts. George Bush was a scam to be from day 1.

Seriously... attached is the picture of Bush as he's discussing why warrantless searches are legal (even though there's a system in place to give warrants after the fact so law enforcement can act quickly).

This is so typical, too. Is it just me, or does Bush come off totally like an asshole not taking this issue seriously. And his laugh - that interrupts his speeches so often - is so condescending.

From this article:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/01/26/bush.ap/index.html

I invite you folks to post your own caption.

"Is it legal? Heheheh, of course it's legal! I'm Mr. Pres!"

Oh, and to show that it's not a freak shot, here's another:

"Pardner, now, calm down... it's only til the War on Terrorism is over! When's that? When every last terrorist is dead!"

This just proves that Boy George has no brains... Remember 59 million idoits voted for him

Can't say I agree. What "doubt" would that be aside from the Bush administration simply claiming it's not illegal? Monitoring the phone conversations of United States citizens without a warrant is illegal, regardless of who they're talking to or what their affiliations are. It's the whole reason the FISA court was set up in the first place (because of just these kinds of abuses during the Vietnam war under Nixon). I think the only reason they've done an end around of FISA is because the NSA is casting such a wide and indiscriminate net that FISA couldn't possibly issue that many warrants (and wouldn't because there'd be no way to establish probable cause). They're data mining with a huge gill net hoping to catch a few tuna. The sad thing is that with the Rebublican congress more interested in toeing the party line than exercising genuine oversight, we likely won't know the extent of the program and its abuses until long after Bush is out of office.

monitoring phone conversations without a warrant is ILLEGAL. i have no problem with anyone monitoring any phone conversations, as long as they legally obtain a warrant. if they don't have enough evidence to legally obtain a warrant to monitor someone's conversations, then they should not be doing it. laws regarding this exist to protect citzens' freedoms and privacy, while still allowing law enforcement, national security, etc to do their jobs.

Did you see him when he was asked how many Iraqi civilians had been killed so far and he answered that it was somewhere around 30,000? It was one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen and he followed it up with a joke. He's a giant asshole.

I honestly don't care what Bush does to this planet, cause I think the main goal for human beings now should be to live fast, and hurry up and die. Cause this world is getting more poulluted and damaged and heated up, and no matter how badly the people want answers, the politicians are business as usual, in the USA they refuse to even admit global warming is an issue!

So it's clear we the people are not running the show on this planet, so it's past saving. Might as well just hurry up and die, trying to cram our lives in before the world is too badly damaged. Everyone says we have another 150 years or so, so it's fine, but that's another three generations at best. So if you have a kid, look at him tonight, and think, three. His son is two. And his son is one.

As long as the democratic platform and party mantra is all about how they hate President Bush and you should too... absolutely. :)

After all... it worked in 2004.

Well Governor Taft of Ohio, ordering only 1 voting machine per 1000 Democrats and 100 voting machines per 1 Republican also helped in 2004. In other words, Voter Fraud.
