English.

It would seem easier to type "lol" than "English", but maybe that works. I'll have to try it on for size. ;)

I started using "heh" lately cause I got tired of saying "heheh" all the time which sometimes sounds like a "dirty old man snicker" in my head.

I never use LOL. Never having done chat before SL, whenever I read it, in my head I hear "Lol" as a word, which kind of sounds like I might have a dumpling stuck in my throat or something.

It took me a while to figure out that it is supposed to be laughter.

heheh
I LOVE dumplings.

It's also easier to type "u" for "you". :)

Personally, I suffer from smiley punctuation syndrome.

Some days it sounds exactly like that in the break room at my office.

I used to hate lol, because nobody was actually laughing out loud. I especially liked to bust friends when they would see them type "lol" without cracking a smile.

Also, when I first started chating way back on this thing called kali, nobody said "lol", so I never said it. I stuck with the usual sliding scale of :

hehe or :)
heheh
haha
hahahahaha

and that got most laughter out of the way. Then later on I got other places where lol was very common. Eventually I picked up lol as filler for "thats pretty funny, if we were having a conversation in real life, i would have smiled and laughed, even if it was just a little snort of humor".

That seems to be the common usage of it that I see in secondlife, and seems to be the current standard way that the language is being used.

As for using english, I think it sounds very awkward to type something along the lines of :

Hamaar Tyne: Thats really funny. I said with a smile.

instead of:

Hamaar Tyne: Thats really funny. lol

Very quick feedback for three letters. A good abbreviation I would think. I still have pet peeves when people abbreviate thanks with thx. If you are saying thanks to me please at least make the effort to type out the whole word. The other pet peeve is you to u. It is just 2 letters, and goes miles in making ur conversation read smoother. ;)

i had a girlfriend once who was from venezuela and it confused me to all hell because she used to type jajajajajaja for laughter.

for the longest time i thought she was missing the "h" key by accident.

I get self-conscious when chatting with people because as I've noticed, there's some snooty assumptions on folks who abbreviate a lot. I used LOL in different variations, pretty much because I was genuinely happy to be talking to someone. I've been phasing it out of my chatter though. But filtering myself isn't any fun, so I don't like chattering much unless it's with people who know me well.

What I don't understand the filler "meh" or "heh." Even with context, I don't know how to interpret those two. I usually interpret them as dismissive or wanting to end the chat. Whatever the intent is to use them in conversations, they always served as a chat killer for me.

An ex-girlfriend of mine is German, she always typed "hihihi" when laughing. Confusing at first, but rather endearing afterward. She was confused by my use of "awwww" - she though it was an exclamation akin to screaming. :)

On "LOL" - I never used to use it - but I find myself doing so more and more often. Help me!

:(

Just a couple of days ago, I used it as sort of a filler - a good friend misinterpreted it as a result, and we had an argument. That'll learn me! :o

So yes, I think it is definately losing it's meaning, and is all to often used as a filler. I am consciously attempting to drastically reduce my use of it.

LOL is just filler and it's almost as bad as "heh" - my most hated of all fillers.

The first time I saw "heh", I replied with "what?" Never did get an answer

Sometimes (for me) "heh" comes across as a bit dismissive. Anyone else read it that way?

That's the trouble with text sometimes, it can be so hard to infer context, especially with reactions intended to convey one's current demeanor.

If I hear "heh" too often I think they are channeling James Brown.

I get very tired of the seemingly compulsory, "wb" - "ty" - "yw" sequence myself.

Yep, I dislike "heh", but "hehe" is ok. "Heh" does seem dismissive.
I definitely "LOL" and "lmao" way too damn much.
If someone comes up with something new and improved though, include me in the memo please cause I am all for it.

here is the solution my good people

step 1: make a gesture, Put chat in and type "I AM LAUGHING NOW"
step 2: Use said gesture after one person says something funny,
step 3: rinse and repeat Step 2 as much as you like,
step 4: Whine on the forums about how its taking over SL,
step 5: stop using said gesture when it grows out of use,
step 6: find out that there never will be a end to L.O.L/ L.M.A.O / R.O.F.L and so and such,

Lather rinse and repeat as many times as it comes up,

I only offer my humble opinions, o.O

Now go and find the real solution my good people before we get thrown off into off topic,

I hate LOL as well. Though, I seem to use it when I don't know some one very well. When my laugh is genuine. You'll know.
