I just had a conversation with a guy that used LOL's like they were pronouns. I started mistaking them for punctuation after a while. Which comes the question.. has that abbreviation lost all its meaning?
I, for one, don't use it.. however, the way it was being used it was like he was saying "please don't hurt me becasuse of what I just said" instead of "laugh out loud".
Just wondering... with so many people overusing it, what is your interpretation on it's meaning in certain conversations? (any examples: post them.. without names of course)
Here is the piece of our conversation that he used it the most:
Other guy: "whatcha doing now lol (please dont' hurt me)"
Me: "Fixing the railing here"
Other guy: "oh i see its crooked lol (is that a knife you have?)"
Me: "Yeah, I moved the floor earlier so its not lined up"
Other guy: "lol (oh god that IS a knife!) now the other side is crooked lol (it's sharpened too!)
Me: "I see that."
Other guy: lol (Please tell my mother I love her)

I've met plenty of people in RL who giggle compulsively. It is often a sign of nervousness or signaling, "I'm not a threat." I do it occasionally.

It can help to use LOL or similar if your statement might otherwise be misinterpreted..sort of a replacement for non-verbal signals.

I recently started saying WTF out loud. Not quite sure how or why, I pronounce it "Whu Tuh Fuh"... Get some wierd looks saying that in a crowded elevator looking at the paper, ect...

I say "LOL" sometimes, but when I want to emphasize something especially funny to me, I say "LOLEX", which is not only a reference to a timepiece my father owned, but EX is a great suffix to mean "extreme" or "extended".

I filter internet laughter in my head. Maybe the meaning is not intended as such, but this is how I sum them up.
hehe or haha = sort of funny or embarrassing. lol = geniunely funny LOL = they really laughed out loud lmao or LMAO = really very funny ROTFLMAOWTFBBQ = you are being insulted  |

I admit to using it, but only if I'm actually laughing. I usually do all caps so it stands out a little and doesn't look like filler.

Never having done chat before SL, whenever I read it, in my head I hear "Lol" as a word, which kind of sounds like I might have a dumpling stuck in my throat or something. It took me a while to figure out that it is supposed to be laughter. _____________________
