I actually use "heh" all the time. It's not really dismissive in my mind, it's just a more subdued giggle compared to going overboard with "heeheehee".

its a good way to show emotion of a statement u make, sometimes typing is a hard way to communicate as someone can find something offensive or like you're giving attitude and such as it's what we hear in our heads as we read it...a simple LOL can ease up something that may sound harsh.

I'm Zap and I have a problem..

I am a complete compuslive lol-er.. I do it non stop.. And Hehe.. And I often miss the last e, so it comes out as Heh, and I don't like that much either, but I take into account they might have missed it too.. And I don't know whether to correct it by saying "e" and coming over obsessive compulsive, or to leave it and just be dismissive..

What else do I use, I use brb and wb.. and gtg.. If I use MSN or text for a long time I slip into full on..

"Hws u? I jst bn shping nd gt sum kl stf.. Il b round l8r.."

And it flows into the forums and emails for a while afterwards which annoys the hell outta me..

Oh well.. If no one cool uses lol anymore I guess I'm just not in with it :p

I rarely ever actually laugh out loud ever. The first time I read "lol" was in 1998 or so, when someone said it to me lots. I asked what it meant but I dont think they knew. Fortunately I didn't find out like this: http://www.bash.org/?120975

Nowadays I know a lot of people who say lol out loud, kind of in response to something that's stupidly amusing but doesnt make you laugh. This video here is exactly how i mean, but it's a big video just for one lol: http://www.purepwnage.com/ (check out episode 1)
I never say lol out loud myself because it's a bit lame.

That reminds me of a film I saw on TV a few years ago, set in the future and slightly like 1984, except the USA had a communo-capitalist government or something, and the family unit had been abolished, people were born in pods or something. But people would greet one another with the whole phrase "Hi how are you i'm fine thank you" - one person would say the whole phrase. I just can't remember the name of the film at all.

Oh, and about "heh", I tend to say it a lot, but only for stuff I find funny. It's fairly apparent from how I use it though, because I use it as a remark before I share something funny I just read.

I will admit that I use lol, lmao, lmfao, omg, omfg, wtf, hehe, haha, heh (which to me is a shortened version of hehe).

In regards to meh and eh, I take it as being dismissive so whatever it is that I am trying to get across to someone is being dismissed as trivial. It also makes me automatically assume that they are in a crappy mood when using meh and eh.

You really know when you have been spending way too much of your time in chatrooms when you are in real life and actually say "laugh out loud".

LOL is just filler and it's almost as bad as "heh" - my most hated of all fillers.

I use "heh" when I find something mildly amusing. :(

WHY DID YOU WAIT ALL THIS TIME TO SAY THAT?!!?!!!

Hold me.

Eventually I picked up lol as filler for "thats pretty funny, if we were having a conversation in real life, i would have smiled and laughed, even if it was just a little snort of humor.

That seems to be the common usage of it that I see in secondlife, and seems to be the current standard way that the language is being used.

This is what 'lol' means to me - I may not be actually 'laughing out loud' but it means that I find what's just happened or what has been said amusing. When I do actually 'laugh out loud' this usually becomes 'LOL'.

Maybe the introduction of 'ffa' for 'finds it faintly amusing' would be more appropriate? :D

oh... and I'm guilty of using thx! :o :p

"hehe" just feels weird and giggly and like too much. "heh" is all about "i did think that was funny, i'm probably not really laughing and shooting milk out of my nose, but i see the humour." I can see where it's seen as dismissive, but i hate that it is because i rarely mean it as such. If it's not funny at all, or if i want someone no less than 500m away from me...i don't laugh at all. oh and...lol.

Never used lol once before coming to SL, but for some reason it just started happening. Dunno why. Same thing with smilies. I recall for a while i would have sentences that were like "wow, that really is blah blah :D but i think it could be better :D". TWO SMILIES...IN ONE SENTENCE. just bad... :D

Oy! This is the same for me. When I chatted or emailed people I never used LOL or any of the other shortcut stuff. Then I started playing There and noticed the avatar's expression would change if I typed words like lol, or smiled or even said suck (av would frown). That was the first time I was in 3D-chat environment so to see the AV actually responding and displaying the mood of my words was quite a coolioski thing.

So when SL came, I tweaked my gestures to make my av more animated in a way. I liked that I could type lol and my av with throw back her head with a huge, gaping guffaw. That's so me in RL. I've been around folks who use the gestures with much gusto and I like it. It's more immersive to see the person bent over with laughter than just seeing an "LMAO" ... LOL will never be lost on me or lame to me for that reason. But when in IM, I try to hold back on em and just stink up the window with my "Pfft's." :p
