From: Billy Grace Have you ever hunted quail Joy?
I ask that because they are very fast and when you shoot them, you are totally focased on the bird. If someone was out of position, like this guy was, he is simply going to get shot. Everything but the bird is kinda blurred because of the fast movement. This guy got shot for one reason. Because he wasn't where he was supposed to be.
Deer hunting is much different. There is never a good excuse for shooting someone because you have all of the time in the world to look at the target and yes, you had better know what it is that you are shooting when you pul that trigger. Oh I know he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and did not announce his presence (maybe he was scared to give the VP heart failure?)... but the person with the gun is a bit more responsible for knowing what he's shooting - you can't call back a bullet. Besides, the Vice President didn't have the proper permits for shooting quail (or old men either) BTW, no I have not ever been quail hunting, but I knew several people who went every year - they never accidentally shot anyone (and we're talking about teenage boys here - they're not exactly known for patience ).

It doesn't exactly fill me with confidence that our Secret Service loses sight of a man with a shotgun in such a fashion that he can sneak up on the vice president unawares. And who is this 78 year old Whittington anyways, some kind of super secret Ninja with special powers of sneakiness? You also mistake what Cheney was doing for an honest to goodness quail-hunt. What he was doing (as is his habit) was driving around a ranch that let's tame birds out of cages while he rides around in his car and blasts them full of buck-shot.

TAMPA, Fla. - (AP) -- Even Gov. Jeb Bush is taking a jab at Vice President Dick Cheney's accidental shooting of a hunting companion.
Bush, younger brother of President Bush, spoke to about 1,000 people Monday at the Florida State Fair Governor's Day Luncheon. All guests, including the governor, were given stickers from the Florida Farm Bureau that read, ``No Farmers, No Food.''Bush placed the bright orange sticker, the same color as a hunting jacket, on his chest. ''I'm a little concerned that Dick Cheney is going to walk in,'' he said.
Texas millionaire Harry Whittington got caught in Cheney's line of fire during a quail hunt Saturday in Texas. Whittington was struck in the face, neck and chest. He was in stable condition Monday at a Texas hospital but is expected to recover.

From: Lecktor Hannibal I think you mean the White House Press Corp. Sorry, Leck, no... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060214/ap_on_go_pr_wh/cheney_hunting_accident_53From: someone The White House has decided that the best way to deal with Vice President Dick Cheney's shooting accident is to joke about it.
President Bush's spokesman quipped Tuesday that the burnt orange school colors of the University of Texas championship football team that was visiting the White House shouldn't be confused for hunter's safety wear.
"The orange that they're wearing is not because they're concerned that the vice president may be there," joked White House press secretary Scott McClellan, following the lead of late-night television comedians. "That's why I'm wearing it."

From: Joy Honey Oh I know he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and did not announce his presence (maybe he was scared to give the VP heart failure?)... but the person with the gun is a bit more responsible for knowing what he's shooting - you can't call back a bullet. Besides, the Vice President didn't have the proper permits for shooting quail (or old men either) BTW, no I have not ever been quail hunting, but I knew several people who went every year - they never accidentally shot anyone (and we're talking about teenage boys here - they're not exactly known for patience ). That's probably because everyone was where they were supposed to be Joy. When a bird flushes and flies across your field of vision... that means not directly away from you... they fly very fast. The shooter has to focus on the bird and yes, everything else is a blur because of the fast movement of the bird and your gun following it. When bird hunting in that situation you NEVER know "exactly" what is behind the bird. You can't. You rely on everyone to be where they are supposed to be... period. To say that you have to "know" what you are shooting implies that it is even possible to follow a fast moving bird and also see and recognize that is behind it which WILL be very very blurred to you and only visible for an instant before you fire. This simply is not possible Joy. As a hunter you HAVE to rely on your fellow hunters to be EXACTLY where they are supposed to be and if someone isn't and gets shot... it is ONLY that persona fault. To say otherwise is to be totally ignorant about hunting birds. I am sorry to say that so bluntly but I am an experienced hunter and do know what I am talking about. If you don’t know how important it is to be where you are supposed to be on a bird hunt then do everyone a favor… and don’t go hunting.

I don't find the story funny to begin with, as a man was seriously injured by Cheney's carelessness, just pointing out that it is not simply left wing Bush/Cheney haters making light of it.

Not to belabor the point here, but many people who are hunters agree that both parties were in the wrong, not *just* Cheney. Not only that, Cheney still didn't have the proper permit to be hunting quail. Yes, he got it retroactively... but in most states, regular people can't do that to avoid paying fines. Just one more reason to believe certain people *are* above the law.

Depends on who catches you, actually Billy is right, to an extent - In group hunting, everyone is expected to be where they are supposed to be, and yes, from what I've been able to learn of the situation, the person who got shot is at fault... ...to a point. It doesn't mean Cheney doesn't share some of the blame too. Half the problem is that this sounds like it was more or less a spontaneous event, not properly planned... which is never a good thing when firearms are involved.

Injury doesn't negate humor... which is why I think the Darwin Awards are hilarious. Of course it's not funny for the person who got injured or killed, or their family and friends, but as I am none of the above I reserve the right to be amused.

I was just speaking for myself personally as not finding it funny. The man was shot in the face, and has now suffered a heart attack from the fragments passing through his heart. I don't find humor in that, even given the circumstances. If he had shot him in the ass or some non-life threatening thing, then ok, but this is a little different. It was a horrible accident that is just not funny to me. I recognize you find it funny, to each their own. You reserve your right to be amused, I will reserve my right to not think it is funny.

From: Joy Honey It's bird shot. But was it lead-free tungsten shot? I would imagine so, if they were hunting-so hey at least the guy does not have to worry about lead poisoning. And yes it is humorous-in that dark way that we know is wrong, so very wrong, and yet we laugh anyway.
