There is a side benefit of hanging out with physical anthropologists - they are quite matter-of-fact about bodies and what they do.

Just because this thread seems to need a hijack, this lack of embarrassment makes for umm... interesting cocktail party tricks. Did you know that it is possible to feel your spinal bones through the back of your mouth? I didn't either until a young female student began demonstrating to the assembled that you can. She did use your fingers and her spine for the demonstration but I'm pretty sure she wasn't drunk nor was there any implied innuendo. ;)
*Ears perk*
Physical anthropologist you say? :p

Thanks Chance. I was told to avoid fried foods because of this, but I wasn't aware of the well-done meat link. Thankfully, when I do have red meat, it's medium or medium-rare. Interesting and saddening to hear about gravy though, I enjoy it, but it looks like another thing to add to my list of things to avoid...

I can.

Regarding the "colonic" data cited above, "they" also say that swallowed chewing gum stays in your gut for seven years and that swallowing watermelon seeds will cause watermelon plants to grow within you. Needless to say, "they" are wrong; barring pathological (and painful) blockages, everything that enters your alimentary canal exits within a day or so. Assertions that anything stays around for much longer are made by people who have no idea at all how evolutionarily risky it is to keep bacteria friendly media hanging around the body for any amount of time. It is for this reason that we continually shed our skin, more rapidly the linings of our entire alimentary canal, and periodically our uterine linings.

Uh huh. This site seems to show the exact opposite with physical evidence and visual aids.

Recent studies have further evaluated the relationship associated with methods of cooking meat and the development of specific types of cancer. One study conducted by researchers from NCI's Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics found a link between individuals with stomach cancer and the consumption of cooked meats. The researchers assessed the diets and cooking habits of 176 people diagnosed with stomach cancer and 503 people without cancer. The researchers found that those who ate their beef medium-well or well-done had more than three times the risk of stomach cancer than those who ate their beef rare or medium-rare. They also found that people who ate beef four or more times a week had more than twice the risk of stomach cancer than those consuming beef less frequently. Additional studies have shown that an increased risk of developing colorectal, pancreatic, and breast cancer is associated with high intakes of well-done, fried, or barbequed meats.

And the article goes on..

I did not start this thread with a "this is a better than that" attitude but several of you have chimed in quite vocally about the health benefits or lack thereof in a vegetarian diet.

Good point. However, you could be making a fundamental attribution error by assuming your uncle looks gaunt and unhealthy because he is a vegetarian. For all you know he could be a meth head, or one of those vegetarians that eat junk food as a primary diet (chips, soda, candy bars, etc..).

To be fair though Bri, I should point out that sit-down restaurants serving well done beef and deep-fried foods is a pretty new thing, when you overlay it on the timeline of humankind. Historically, humans have done a lot of stewing and roasting, for millenia before we started adopting these bad diets we "enjoy" today. Also, highly-processed plant foods aren't very friendly either, and again, they are relatively new phenomenon in our history.

I am afraid to look at your link in that other post above. :p Not feeling to well as it is tonite.

Which would be really cool except that it is utter bullshit.

I'm sorry, I thought you were asking a question you actually wanted an answer to; I shan't make that mistake again.

Incidentally, web sites selling $500 snake-oil home colonic treatments are not usually the best source for unbiased information. However, you may also find it worthy of note that aggressive blood-letting can also leave people feeling preternaturally energized as do many other severe perturbations of homestasis.

WARNING: Draining a couple of liters of blood from your body can be extremely hazardous and may result in severe injury or death. Do not try this at home.

And may I add, that if you're going to go ahead and attempt it anyways... at least rotate through the blood banks a bit... Waste not, want not.

Strange Restaurant

I said, "I'll take the T-bone steak."
A soft voice mooed, "Oh wow."
And I looked up and realized
The waitress was a cow.
I cried, "Mistake--forget the the steak.
I'll take the chicken then."
I heard a cluck--'twas just my luck
The busboy was a hen.
I said, "Okay no, fowl today.
I'll have the seafood dish."
Then I saw through the kitchen door
The cook--he was a fish.
I screamed, "Is there anyone workin' here
Who's an onion or a beet?
No? Your're sure? Okay then friends,
A salad's what I'll eat."
They looked at me. "Oh,no," they said,
"The owner is a cabbage head."

From Wikipedia:

Vega (α Lyr / α Lyrae / Alpha Lyrae) is the brightest star in the constellation Lyra, and the fifth brightest star in the sky. It is the second brightest star in the Northern night sky, after Arcturus, and can often be seen near the zenith in the mid-northern latitudes during the Northern Hemisphere summer.

It is a "nearby star" at only 25.3 light years from Earth, and together with Arcturus and Sirius, one of the brightest stars in the Sun's neighbourhood.

I got it! Vegan is a soybean product so if you eat a lot of that you don't qualify for the other 2 catagories!

What does one have to do with the other? I don't know about the more outlandish claims, but doing one of those (not this particular one, but a similar cleansing) certainly got me over a multi-year IBS-ish condition. One which my health insurance-supplied doctor refused to worry about, but instead kept offering me prescriptions for pain relievers. There's a lot of empirical wellness to investigate among all the fluff. Since then, 3 years ago, I've not had a single cold or episode of hay fever but that's probably a coincidence. Too many variables in my experiences.

Didn't Vegas go bye bye in the 1970s? What do cars have to do with peoole eating soybeans? I tried some of them soybean (Vegan) hamburgbers and hotdogs and let me tell you they really suck.

I have no idea why someone would be a Vegan. Eat meat or vegetables or both and leave the frozen health food products alone.

I don't know. I seem to be overly sensitive to the plant estrogens in soy products. I drink a pint of soymilk and next thing I know I'll be dancing around the office and feeling my cheeks heat when some cute guy from our project contractors stops by. :o
