We do have a 1st Amendment here, so reporters can't be told to hush up... Unless some people succeed in prosecuting the NYT for disclosing state-secrets which the govt never trusted them with anyway, and they they were never supposed to have in the first place, them being civilians and all..

Here's my take on things: I'm a Republican, but I've come to the sobering conclusion awhile back that just like Clinton, Bush is a power-hungry megalomaniac, who uses the war to justify his power-grabs. The Democrats in leadership positions, however, are like a bunch of rabid dogs, not caring how many soldiers die as a result of what they say, as long as it means making GWB look bad, so that they can grab power again. They're also a bunch of socialists; they're no alternative.

Americans in the 1700s would not be surpised at any of this, which is why they instituted checks and balances, one of the chief framers of the Constitution, James Madison, stating that "ambition must be made to counteract ambition.".

They also didn't want politicians to divide themselves into political parties because it was feared that they would then put the interests of their Party above those of the Country, and time has proven them right on that point. I think term-limits for Congress would be very helpful in weakening the party-system in the US.

Congress also needs to be less timid in asserting its own Constitutional authority over the executive, regardless of whether we're in a war or not.


P.S. I also think people who believe the US govt was involved in 9/11 are nuts.
That's all fornow. I'll find more things to ramble on about later, perhaps.

OK, I see what you're talking about. Security tapes. I thought you had meant reporters tapes. But at least some of those were subsequently released. I watched several versions of the same footage on youtube, some from conspiracy theorists and some from not

Just this week the NYT and several other papers were called by the white house and told to not print a story about a sepina that did not involve any state secrets, secret governmental programs, or anything else. Further several conservative newspapers who also ran the same story (not just sourcing NYT mind you, the source was publicly available), were not called and told to not print the story.

Something is clearly wrong when the administration thinks that they may dictate who runs what when nothing 'secret' is involved.
