The Crusades occurred mostly to recover lands that had been Christian for nearly 1000 years from intolerant Moslem invaders. The Inquisition was not really that widespread in its effects outside of Spain and it was pursued in the interests of maintaining an orthodoxy of religious practice, not to butcher millions. To judge either of these events, which occured in a medieval or pre Renaissance world by our modern standards, you have to also accept that a lot of good, like modern medicine, modern agricultural methods, advanced mathematics and the recovery of classical philosophy - which directly led to the Renaissance and modern ways of thought were the children of the Crusades.

really? most real inovators of medicine and science were reviled by the church and imprisoned if not killed.

Perhaps they didn't set out to butcher millions but they did....so because they didn't mean to its acceptable?...especially if it all works out in the end and some good came of it?

I can't accept the attrocities comitted under either symbol no matter what the outcome.

Aren't you just better than everybody else.

I bet you spend your whole life with the two other like-minded people who comprise thegroup of non-small minds.

I take it that was aimed at me.....care to qualify your remarks?

I never claimed to be better than anyone ...merely asking questions...but apparently its wrong to question certain symbols and not be single minded when it comes to others.

The Nazis made quite a few discoveries in medicine, aeronautics, and rocketry. Those same Nazis were brought back to the US to continue pursuing these developments. In a lot of ways, these developments can be considered the children of the Holocaust. That doesn't make the Nazis any less repugnant, nor does it improve the image of the unjust Crusaders. Had it not been for those "intolerant Moslem" philosophers and scientists, the West would have continued to stagnate under the overbearing yoke of an irrational religion that was hostile to scientific progress.

"It" what? That one symbol is reviled for the acts committed under it, or that another is still revered despite the acts commited under it?

Here's my take: The deasil swastika isn't a nazi symbol. The widdershins swastica is. That both are now reviles shows how the human mind tends to generalise.
As for the Calvary Cross not being reviled - well, no one crushed those using it throughougly enough to completely reinvent them in thier history books, did they?

Are you able to back up the statement that it was actual nazis, or was it simply "Germans during the Nazi era" doing what they were told? Well I guess it doesn't matter, the Holocaust itself has nothing to do with it--(unless "medical experiments" in the category actually resulted in useful knowledge but thats too disgusting to think about.) Actually I think it's a little...silly to imply that we have the Holocaust to "thank" for advances in rocketry or aeronautics. etc Actually more like the opposite if you consider how much brainpower was wasted as a result. It seems more conceivable that the Crusades, not to justify them, were a much more direct cause of many advances in Europe.

BTW above are we talking about the "backwards" "swastika" which I think is a Hindu religious symbol or are we talking about the same symbol stolen/corrupted/used by Shitler and the likes?

Edit: I would agree that the war caused (encouraged more specifically) medical, rocketry and aeronautics advances...obviously.

Nazi doctors (the butcher Josef Mengele) experimented on Jewish victims, while many of the rocketry facilities (Peenemünde being the foremost example) were staffed by Jewish slaves, who helped build the test rockets. Why wouldn't I associate these advances with the Holocaust?

I mentioned that I'm willing to possibly concede the medical part--but slavery has nothing to do with the Holocaust itself, technically. I think saying the Holocaust was a direct cause of rocketry advances is a stretch.

The whole comparison came from equating the Holocaust with the Crusades and I just don't think the two are even in the same category. They both sucked--but the Holocaust produced VERY LITTLE (based on what you've presented) to benefit anyone, the Crusades produced quite a bit more positive results I believe. I don't think David was saying the Crusades were justified, but just pointing out good sideeffects.
How the hell the thread got to this topic I have no clue!

I'm coming after you with my katana, and I don't mean the one I have in SL.

I hope you realize you just issued a death threat, something that could land you a year or so of jail time to think about the hypocrisy of condemning those who randomly kill people while you yourself are so ready to do the same.

Thank God this thread degenerated into a useless yet more mentally tolerable discussion, it's about time.

Lo, is that because of all the fog?

Seconded. Not a single thing was learnt about rocketry or aeronautics at all in the entire process of rounding up jews, transporting them, and anhiliating them. This process did not at any stage further our knowledge of rocketry. Or aeronautics. We would be wrong in the head to dream of thanking the Holocaust. It robbed us of 6 million people at least. They were hot sexy women, handsome men, smart male and female scientists, business leaders, religeous experts, valuable doctors, nurses and surgeons and a million other trades you care to mention. And then they were killed. That really didn't help anyone.

Back on to the original topic, I am no fan of the holocaust or Hitler's Nazis.

But I love all of the fashion and the propoganda... the signs and recruitment posters they had. I especially love the uniforms. I am a huge uniform fan, but the Nazi uniforms are really neat. I'm sorry? :)

I made one of my avatars a uniform to be honest. I took a whole bunch of different parts of different uniforms so it wouldn't be an exact duplicate of any Nazi uniform. But I must admit that I do like the uniforms and stuff.

I think what happened in that era is awful, and I NEVER put a swastika on any of the uniforms.

It's alright if you like the Nazi uniforms, or if you think the goose stepping loads of troops look impressive. Hitler and especially Goebels (wrong spelling I think) the propaganda guy were no fools. They had a gift for making Nazism appealing. Bit of a shame really cause it'd be easier to hate the nazis if they all had crooked backs and wore tattered rags like in a children's story, but they only got where they did by sweeping people away with their impressive uniforms, and order, and clubs and societies for the kids...

Mind you they do say the stuff that looks the nicest is often the worst for you...
