I like to think about THX-1138 as I do so. ![]() |

Count me in! (being local to the Bay Area does help)
In addition to the many excellent suggstions so far (WiFi connections, Saturday as Keynote and sessions day, Big Screens, SL connected workstations)... I suggest: Streaming video (access provided to paid remote attendees, fee less than in person). Transcription is 'nice' but just can't deliver the flair, nuance, and atmosphere of a live conference. My company can provide consulting and deployment services for streaming video if LL is interested. Sessions on Scripting (intro and advanced). 'Birds of a Feather' gathering for attendees of similar development interests; scripters, builders, texturers, event planners, etc. An SLDC that cost $100-200 is acceptable to me. Honestly it should be for those who are serious about developing in SL, and not a LL sponsored SL fan party in my opinion. So setting the price at an appropriate level for serious developers is important. If the price is too low (even if it only draws from the Bay Area), it will dilute the ratio of LL engineers to serious developer attendees too much. _____________________

I'd like to second a couple of suggestions:
1) combine with a resident meet and greet. This could only make the fabric of SL's society even stronger. 2) regionalize. Having the "main" conference in San Fran is logical. However, depending on market size, perhaps have a few Lindens on the East coast of the USA, and some more in the UK. Charge $125 instead of $100 to cover the costs of sending Lindens to the UK / USA east coast and obvious costs like hotels. I'm sure a free trip to Europe wouldn't be a hard sell for some Linden Lab employees! I'm sure the East Coast of the USA and the UK are large enough markets, resident wise, to justify this expense... but I'm not sure about elsewhere. Videoconference Philip's keynote address and have similar "breakout" sessions in multiple locations. Just my two cents; it would take more planning, but I believe there would be much higher turnout. As an east coaster, I wouldn't have the time to come to San Fran but I'm sure Jennyfur and I would gladly block out a weekend for a New York, Philly, or DC conference / meeting. Heck, if it were in Philly, we'd find a place to host it! Regards, -Flip PS - edited for a typo. Give me a break, its Monday morning! ![]() |

I'd go and I'm in CT.
$100 seems fair. Work conferences for me cost much more than that. Just let us know the sooner the better! (for trip planning). Does anyone know where I can buy purple skin paint? It is come as your AV right? ![]() _____________________

It seems to me (and its not a problem for me as I live by SFO so other than spending half a day trying to find a parking space), SL is kind of not about boundaries. There are a lot of people who oculd not attend that have more right to be there than me. Maybe there is a hybrid solution involving setting sites up in SL that somehow mirror RL content. The advantage that would have is
a) the conference is as big as SL and as small as the number of RL people that could attend (it would have to mirror to multiple locations in SL to avoid lag) b) I presume that a lot of the RL content is SL so it would already be there c) Doing it in SL could remove some time restrictions d) The Lindens can pull out the hi-tech video streaming tech that we all know they have squirreled away (just joking guys) |

*Stands up and clears throat nervously*
Could I attend even if all I do ingame is chat, DJ and occassionally texture my house? Sounds really interesting. *blushes and sits back down* _____________________

$100? No problem. Count me in, I'm in cupertino, so.. I can be there in 50 minutes with traffic.
Obvious questions: 1. are you going to have enough internet connections for everyone who brings a machine? 2. are you going to have wireless access? 3. are you going to set up a private sim for the conference? I went to PHPCon 2002 in the peninsula, and that was pretty cool. That was their first year doing that in north america. They went through an official even planning place, I think, but.. you don't need to. You could set up a shop in SL for a ticket booth. ![]() |

I agree with Ezhar and Joan. One of the cool things about SL is being able to meet people from anywhere.
It is true that a little audio could be nice; there are plenty of VoIP solutions out there that could complement holding the meeting in SL. Meeting in RL to discuss SL is a little like Microsoft using Linux ![]() Azelda |

A great idea

If there was a way for this east coaster to attend, I'd be there no problem! But as many other posters have already stated, location is a problem.

Okay this may seem wacky to you all but how about some of the local SF'ers host some of us East Coasters et al ? That saves ya the hotel costs! If any SF'ers are interested or think that's absolutely crazy speak up!

Im going to bring up a taboo subject. But *pauses*
There had a real life gathering..... I was unable to attend but I did watch webcams and hear live feed from the gathering all set up by users. We had a huge irc channel dedicated to it. We had people come by the cam and wave it was a great expirience even if I couldnt make it. I think the conference sounds like a great idea. But I would really like to see something similar since I cant travel. |

Great idea! I could bring my iSight and set it up as a webcam for the event. Problem is it'll be on my PowerBook, so you'll be getting a view of what I'm seeing (I'll try to aim the 'Book accordingly).

Any ideas for session topics? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Goal: bring together interested residents from the SL community for education, discussion, involvement in longer term direction of Second Life Structure: One day, with keynote in AM by Philip followed by 2 breakout sessions, lunch, 2 breakout sessions, closing remarks by Philip Some ideas for breakout sessions: -- Creation: SL development and building, including texture design, advanced building techniques, adding behaviors -- Entrepreneurship: starting a business in SL, copyright law, -- Social: governance in SL, role of identity/avatar creation, event management Social: cocktail reception evening prior with Linden employees; swag (real and virtual) 1. I'm close enough, It would be a shame to pass up.
100 Bucks is reasonable. And topics for discussion... *get's out pen and entire pad of paper*.... hehe Just kidding. I'll think on it. Crow _____________________

and good ideas for those people who can't make it live in rl. However, no response from the Lindens since Robin's first post. Care to comment Robin? Anybody?

Thanks for all the great feedback. It's most helpful.
Many of you asked why we didn't have the conference in Second Life. Good question, and good suggestion. In thinking through everything we want to discuss and consider, we agree that's the best idea. It allows the widest participation, immediate demonstrations, and we'll still figure out a way to include swag (real and virtual!). I don't have a date yet, but as we firm up our plans, I'll try to give you as much advance notice as possible. _____________________
