We're thinking about holding a conference in San Francisco this summer, and would love some feedback from you. Following are the very early ideas for how we might structure the conference. Please let me know what you think! Would you come? Would you be willing/able to pay a conference fee? How much seems reasonable (we're thinking it would be roughly $100)? Any ideas for session topics?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Goal: bring together interested residents from the SL community for education, discussion, involvement in longer term direction of Second Life
Structure: One day, with keynote in AM by Philip followed by 2 breakout sessions, lunch, 2 breakout sessions, closing remarks by Philip
Some ideas for breakout sessions:
-- Creation: SL development and building, including texture design, advanced building techniques, adding behaviors
-- Entrepreneurship: starting a business in SL, copyright law,
-- Social: governance in SL, role of identity/avatar creation, event management
Social: cocktail reception evening prior with Linden employees; swag (real and virtual)
I think it's a great idea. If only I wasnt on the other side of the world, I would definitely attend. If you go ahead with this, I hope you make transcripts available or even better, mp3s!
Yep.
Maybe there could be a few different passes: $40ish to attend just the keynote and $100ish for everything?
It'd be nice to sit down for a detailed explanation on the inner workings of LSL and/or SL. Might be useful for the more advanced scripters and/or builders out there.
Great idea overall, can't wait to see what becomes of it! ^_^
I'd come! A hundred bucks US is a bit steep for a Canadian though, depending on what's included. :)
What I'd really love to see at a conference like this? A sneak-preview of what's coming in the future for SL. Some ideas that are in the mill. What would also be neat? A presentation about the evolution of SL and how what you planned to do changed as things went along.
I might, I might not. I'd need dates and I'd need to know if I can bring people with me.
I can't go, but if there's any in-world stuff going on at the time of the conference, count me in :)
Anyone willing to offer me a ticket? :D
This sounds interesting to me too. So long as the airline prices from Portland OR are reasonable at the time of the conference.
Definitely need to allow some way for us not in the same area to be able to voice in on whatever the attendants will be able to voice in on.
Either that, or pay for my plane ticket and hotel :D
I'm only about 3 hours away so depending on the date can most likely attend.
Do we get land with that 100 bucks? Better yet drawings for lifetime accounts? ;)
and out of nowhere *WHAP* another awesome and unforeseen development by those crazy cats at LL!
would i pay $100? no doubt about it. yes!
would i attend? hard to say.. seeing as how i'm on the east coast.. literally.. i look out the window and see the Atlantic ocean.
do i want to? yes!
really an awesome idea.. just going to have to deal with everyone who can't make it due to location. i STRONGLY suggest you consider what you can offer everyone else that aren't nearby or wealthy enought to fly there from wherever in the world they are.
..actually, ask everyone what would work. maybe offer a DVD for sale of the event? transcripts? a way to interact somehow?
excellent idea.
discuss options for those unable to attend.
at least provide some sort of record of the event.
You should make some more use of your own product and hold such conferences in Second Life. The only real downside there is the lack of cocktails. The huge advantages are: much cheaper, no traveling involved, people that are very interested but stuck on the other side of the planet could attend, and the ability to work on the things discussed immediatly instead of taking notes.
I would love to attend. While $100 doesnt sound too bad, I'm not sure I can swing it. How much would that be in L$? :D
L$24,000 will get you $100.80 on IGE at the moment. There's a lot you could do with that left over 80 cents.
WOW!! *Claps for LindenLabs*
But I'm in Sydney (yup Aussie here) and definately can't afford a trip to the US but would definately go if I could.
Great idea tho, I sure hope those of us who can't attend will be able to see (not just logs) what went on, and even have a way to contribute if possible.
Even just seeing the faces behind the Lindens would be fun. hehe
Not only would I be interested in going, but the topics look really good and pertinent too.
I think it would also be REALLY good for the SL community.
Good idea...
SF eh?
Portland to SF - sure that's do-able...
But i'd also like to know what arrangements will be made for inworld - or even a Cam broadcast of the event via. Yahoo or ....?
Ezhar makes an excellent point. A private sim, with no lag or griefers. An all day series of events. Many more people will be able to attend and feel included. Many more viewpoints to be considered. An excellent suggestion.
I see the point of meeting face to face, but your really letting a great opportunity get away if in world activities dont accompany an event like this.
Two days driving each way is a bit far for a one-day conference. I don't think I'll be there.
Sorry, I'm not dragging my two small kids and a very work-busy husband who, frankly, still thinks SL is silly, to San Fran for a conference like this. Maybe in a couple years...
