For me, turning shadows off made all the difference. no more freezing or crashing since then. So, if you haven't looked at your preferences and graphics tab, might check it out and make sure shadows is unchecked. :-)

Turning off shadows sucks...

What use is it when you need to turn off all the features that make SL look nice ?

Had no problems with shadows, and effect settings to high details in version 1.5.xx, now in 1.6 that was promised to render faster and more stable turn off all that what makes it look better ? That's weird...

Also have a major problem, they say in "help" when having problems with graphics, make sure to install the "latest" driver for your graphics board... After having massive problems in 1.6 with constantly crashing every few minutes I gave that a try - and got really pissed then:
I upgraded driver for my nvidia GT6600 / 256 MB from Detonator 66.93 to latest version, and then SL client didn't recognise the graphic board any longer, telling me permanently it is a "generic PCI board" and was not longer able to start SL - grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr - sop much to "install a new driver"...
Even when uninstalled the driver then and got back to the previous version, SL was still telling me now "generic PCI board", so it did cost me a new installation of windows in the end to have SL running again, *more grrrrrrrrrrrrr's*....

When I need to turn off all the effect features to have it running a kind of "stable", I begin to ask myself what kind of "wonder machines" some ppl might have that can use those features ????
At least using a bit of shading (as I can in every other 3D game.... without problems) should be possible on a AMD Athlon 3200+, 1,5 GB RAM and a GT6600 /256 MB graphics board
