Crash-gasm

Wow, I downloaded 1.6 this morning, logged in and have, in the space of 15 minutes had the client crash on me 6 times. The client freezes and no matter how long I leave it it doesn't unfreeze and I have to close it down and open it up again.

I didn't find this problem in preview when I used it and no, I didn't have this problem with 1.5 either.

At present it's totally unuseable for me and I'm on an Athlon XP 3.2ghz with 1 gig ram and an NVidia GeForce FX 5950 Ultra.

I have the exact same spec. And I was crashing once every 10 minutes before 1.6.

And half my inventory was corrupted before the conversion

SO looking forward to logging in to 1.6...


Meh. Maybe it'll be the miracle cure I needed for my borked account and two dozen unresolved bug reports

Really? Bizarre. I crashed very infrequently with 1.5, probably once a week or so, but with 1.6 I just can't stay in for more than a minute or so. Originally I thought it might be the same as a lot of other people are finding - that the client freezes for 10-20 seconds and then is OK again, but nope, this doesn't happen in my case

I haven't even tried looking at my inventory, teleporting or moving very far lol.

At first I thought it was every time I looked at water, but it seems to be triggered by swivelling movement in game. or at least there is a correlation. half the time i turn with the arrow keys I crash. HARD too. with those evil you-fell-asleep-at-the-wheel-and-are-on-the-ribbed-roadside- sounds.

Sorry...I just HAD to do it!


And to stay on subject....when I finally got in...I crashed every three minutes. I finally gave up for about 3 hours and tried again...and I lasted a whole 15 minutes. Maybe tomorrow I can stay on for a half an hour!

I didn't find a correlation. First time it was when I opened the IM window, second time when I opened the about land dialog, third, fourth, fifth and sixth times when I was just standing around, not moving and talking to somebody else. I even removed all my attachments after the first couple of times to see if it was that, but no.

I am right there with you. Everytime I log in SL, I freeze up and then the it locks up. I did not evem make it to downloading clothing several times, as soon as I got in I froze up. I was in for several hours not to long ago, now I can not even move with out it freezing up. It happens a different events. I have even being adjusting my graphics setting to see it that helped, at last it had no effect. Here is my systems configuration

Mother Board: ASUS A8N-SLI
CPU: AMD FX-55
RAM: 1024MB
VIDEO: ASUS Extreme N6800 Ultra PCI-E 256MB
POWER SUPPLY: 550w
HDD: Hitachi 250G SATA

Just out of couriousity does anyone have any off the same or simular equipment. I am thinking it may be a hardware issue, but not sure. With version 1.5.xx I did not have any trouble running SL. In fact is ran great with all the eye candy plus had Photoshop and Netscape up most of the time, with no noticible slow down or lag at all. Now I am even lucking to move before I crash. PLEASE HELP.....

Just thought I'd check the NVidia drivers and there's an updated one from 11th March available. So I've installed it and.................




.......nope, still crashing in the same way.

5 crashes in less than twenty mintues. 775 board, 2 gigs memory, NVidia 6800 Ultra card, 4.2 meg connection, all latest drivers.

Time for 1.6.1

Six crashes in less than ten minutes.

775 motherboard & 3.6 ghz cpu, 2 gigs memory, NVidia 6800 Ultra video, 4.2 megabyte connection. All latest drivers.

Crashes whether I move, stand, open inventory, or activate tools. SL is not useable.

Seth, where in the world are you experiencing this? The reason being that I just logged in, teleported straight out from where my home is and managed to get there and fly around for about 5 minutes with no problem at all. I then teleported back to my home (Numbakulla) and I locked up again within 30 seconds. I'd like to try going to some of the other places that people are locking up as I'm wondering if it's not content or sim specific this problem now.

Location: My "home" in Stump. I tried teleporting to another location once, and did not get there.

Worth noting that 1.5 and the 1.6 preview worked fine on the same system. (I recently had to replace the motherboard, but the new motherboard also worked in 1.5 & 1.6 preview.)

Seth, I'm just trying to see if there's some sort of pattern that's all. I only seem to be crashing all the time at my home point, and nowhere else from what I've seen so far. So I was curious if other places where people were crashing a lot would also make me crash, but I've just been to Seacliff where somebody else was when they were locking up all the time and I didn't have a problem - but as soon as I went back to my home I did lock up again within 30 seconds.

It was just a thought, that's all. I had no problems like this in preview or in 1.5 either. I'll log back in now and go to Stump and see what happens.

Seth, just been to your land in Stump and flew around and went up to your amazing airship (WOW!!!!), walked around that for a while, went back down. No crashes. TP'd back to my home and locked up nearly instantly. Looks like my idea isn't right, unless it's something to do with where our home is, e.g. only happens at your home place. I dunno, it's perplexing to me. All the time I've been in SL for the last few months I've spent on Numbakulla and it's never made me crash before. But now, it's crash-tastic for me there for some reason. *shrugs*

Then the problem may have to do with the "set home" code. I'll try tp'ing and setting home to last place visited and see if the crashing stops.

Same here i get into SL easy then after a moment or as soon as I move or try to fly it locks and freezes and nothing works. Cannot ALT TAB or CTR:ALT Del nothing works have to power off machine and reboot it. So far no improvement . I am NOT in my home sim but I am on a sim i mostly own and I cannot play at all as each time i enter game i freeze solid within a min.

It is usually as SOON as you attempt to move sideways, the entire machine simply freezes i can walk across a room but as soon as i turn its all gone.

yet 11 hours later I am unable ot play yet the preview worked fine and all previous versions over last 15 months have run

your recent post of support list items makes NO reference to this problem the GAME IS NOW UNPLAYABLE !!

I unfortunately seem to be crashing as well after a minute or two. Not sure what is wrong. Worked well with 1.5 after I replaced faulty ram. But same machine and crashitis is happening. Any cures?

Unfortunately, the Lindens don't yet have a 24-7 support staff. As such, from 9pm to 9am, there's unlikely to be many people in the office. Rather, they're sleeping. I know it's frustrating, but try to remember the time difference.

well thank u for telling me about time zones.. did somone appoint you to make this observing or you just feel you need to on your own?

It's a world wide game which interestingly has just launched a new version of which one main sales point is support for multi languages for those many people who play from many countries....Ur own time zone is not the only one in which both product and service is offered. As you say ' do try to remember' that won't you?

While I pay each month for my near 2 sim tier I think I will ask occasionally why things dont work without too much conscience being disturbed for me...

Sorry, I was trying to offer an explanation for why nobody was responding yet -- nobody was there.

I'm one of the developers, and I'm looking into our recent crash-happiness.

There is a crash related to sim-to-sim handoffs that seems to be caused by teleporting home. There is also another crash related to rendering selected attachments that seems to be biting a lot of people. Doug and Richard are on that one.

Thanks for sending in crash reports -- they really do help. That said, I've been through all the crash reports for everyone who posted to this thread, and none of them have the "call stack" debugging information that would help me narrow this down.

There are two things you could do to help me:

1) Make sure sending crash reports is enabled in the Second Life preferences (Preferences -> General -> Automatically Report Crashes

2) Make sure Windows crash dumps are on. Go to Start -> Run and type "drwtsn32" to run the Dr. Watson crash configuration program. Make sure "Create Crash Dump File" is turned on, and crash dump type is set to "Mini".

Thanks again for your patience. We're working on it, and SL 1.6.1 will be out soon.

I really can't speak for the Lindens but I've been a software developer since 1973, and after deploying a major release like 1.6 to the general population, I seriously doubt "nobody was there"; more like "everyone was busy debugging and reading crash reports and too busy putting out fires elsewhere".

I did that and checked and both are set like that for me crash dump and auto report, there is however no button i can see to set to ' mini' as u ask.

You shuld be get information from my crash logs cos these are both set as u say

Also, please try turning off streaming movies by going to Preferences -> Media -> Play Streaming Media When Available.

There's a known crash bug related to QuickTime movies. I'd be curious to see if this fixes the problem for you.
