EDIT: Damn, Seth beat me by milleseconds
I was experiencing the same issues as everyone here, random freezing while doing different things in SL, there seemed to be no rhyme or reason. I played with my video settings today trying different combinations and found the issue:
I TURNED SHADOWS OFF
It solved my problem, hopefully it will help some of your's as well.
I have submitted a bug report and it is totally reproduceable; shadows off = played for 2 hours no prob, shadows on = locked up within 1 minute.

Well, that's good, because I found the same issue. So perhaps we've got this one done.

From: Seth Kanahoe I'm afraid that the Lindens are now stonewalling on this issue. Either that, or the left hand doth not talk to the right hand. In the hotline forum Pathfinder Linden responded to my thread on random freezes and crashes by implying that there were no reports on freezing and crashing, and that the problem was likely my outdated video drivers. He referred me to a Linden announcement on known problems with 1.6 that does not include the freezing/crashing issue. I was told the same thing the frist time that i called LL, and when they brought up my crash report I did have some older drivers installed. I downloaded and istalled the latest Video drivers and chipset drivers fron NVidia. I did notice a difference in the performance of my system, but it still crashed when i went to my home sim. From: Seth Kanahoe I'd be much happier if we got relatively regular updates saying "we don't know what the problem is, but we know there is a problem, and we're trying....Here's what you can do to help...." I am very willing to accept this situation and be patient, as long as I know something is being done. I think that is true of all of us. When I talked to Lee Linden, he knew about the problem and his is the one that told me to try to login a different sim by using the run command "secondlife://ahern/120/0" and that worked and got into SL with no trouble at all. But still can not goto my home sim. I have received an email from Lee this morning want to know if i have tried to unistall and reinstall SL and if I did, that a LL employee would like to hijack my account to see what is going on with it. I do not have a problem with that at all, infact I think that would be the best thing for them to do. From: Seth Kanahoe As it is, SL is not usable for me on any of the four computers and three IP's I can access, and I have already had to cancel several building contracts I've made inworld. I am also unable to run it on my two computers with out crashing at my home sim. From: Seth Kanahoe I'm going to give this a few days. If the problem hasn't been at least recognized by then, I will have to consider whether SL is worth my time and money. I do enjoy the time that I spend in SL and I have made so many new frineds in game, and do not want to leave SL because of this MAJOR roadbump in the road of improvement. I know that LL will get the problem worked out. Crossing Fingers that it will be very soon

Remember, if you have the same issue and this solves it, be sure to do a bug report ingame.

I also have this same problem, so today I tried checking the debugger log. I really have no idea what any of the debug information means, but I thought maybe it'd be helpful for someone else. I ran a test several times, and every single time the same messages would appear just before the freeze, and nowhere else would they appear. Obviously the debugger isn't going to show the exact problem because the program is going to lock up before it has a chance to spit out a "THIS IS THE PROBLEM RIGHT HERE!" message of some sort, but it might narrow thigns down a little. So here are the last few lines of the log at one point: 2005-04-03T01:27:09Z INFO Sending throttle settings, total BW 70000 2005-04-03T01:27:09Z INFO Tightening network throttle to 70000 2005-04-03T01:27:10Z INFO Circuit: 69.25.105.53:12035 resent 2 packets
And the last test showed: 2005-04-03T01:38:02Z INFO Sending throttle settings, total BW 315000 2005-04-03T01:38:02Z INFO Tightening network throttle to 315000 2005-04-03T01:38:03Z INFO Sending throttle settings, total BW 280000 2005-04-03T01:38:03Z INFO Tightening network throttle to 280000 2005-04-03T01:38:05Z INFO Sending throttle settings, total BW 245000 2005-04-03T01:38:05Z INFO Tightening network throttle to 245000 2005-04-03T01:38:06Z INFO Sending throttle settings, total BW 280000 2005-04-03T01:38:06Z INFO Easing network throttle to 280000 2005-04-03T01:38:07Z INFO Sending throttle settings, total BW 315000 2005-04-03T01:38:07Z INFO Easing network throttle to 315000 2005-04-03T01:38:08Z INFO Sending throttle settings, total BW 350000 2005-04-03T01:38:08Z INFO Easing network throttle to 350000
Again this is probably normal, but it might help determine what is leading up to the problem.

I've always suspected that somebody was trying to throttle my network. I wish they'd get their hands off my neck.
I took off streaming media, as they suggested, also dialed back draw distance, untoggled a few other things like shadows, too, and I seem to have stopped crashing, but if I am near telehubs and try to fly up too abruptly I go through the freeze again.
So now I walk slowly out of telehubs and fly when I clear them.
I can't be sure whether it was turning off media, turning off shadows, decreasing draw distance or stopping my habit of turning on the sun that has lessened (but not ended) my freezes and lock-ups.

Okay from my last post I had a suspicion that something was wrong with my network Bandwidth setting. So I went in and changed it from 350 to the default (300 I think? Atleast that's what I set it back to.) Logged in and flew around the same sim I was freezing on. Didn't lock up. So I went to change it back to 350 to confirm if it was indeed the bandwidth setting. Logged in again and still have no problems as of yet. I'm not sure if resetting the bandwidth setting fixed it or if it was some coincidence.
I'm going to wait and see how long it lasts before locking up again. If anyone else wants to try this go ahead and post your results. That way we can either rule this out as a coincidence or a potential problem.

Darn already running with shadows off, Seems directly connected to my inventory. As soon as I open a folder containing many items it brings it to a crawl, Then a few minutes later the mini map goes red, So it's crashed far as I'm concerned. It doesnt exit game though so its not sending crash reports about it. I can still look around in all directions, and anything that was moving continues on its path but i can't move from that spot

Hmmm...shadows off is not completely removing the crashing, damn.
Opening inventory may be at issue. I open it, and see...nothing. I hit the plus a couple of times...nothing.
FInally it opens up. Hangs. Then I freeze and crash.

shadows off working so far
04-03-2005 03:01
From: Seth Kanahoe :
It seems that 1.6 has broken the "enable shadow" function in the graphics and display settings under "preferences."
Turning shadows off stopped the freezing and crashing problem in both systems I have at home.
I'm afraid that the Lindens are now stonewalling on this issue. Either that, or the left hand doth not talk to the right hand. In the hotline forum Pathfinder Linden responded to my thread on random freezes and crashes by implying that there were no reports on freezing and crashing, and that the problem was likely my outdated video drivers. . Seth. well noticed, I been working thru all my settings but at first only turn off all the major ones and hadn not got to this one. I now turn this off and at last I can move around and walk in SL.. so far.... whereas for last 50 hours have been freezing within seconds of connecting. Well done, and thanks. yet to try many other functions. I am not normally given to complaints against Lindens but I must say this time as above I am really disappointed why this issue hasnt had any reponse since James Linden posted message 32 in this thread, not has it been mentioned. I am also disappointed in no email response from support within 50 hours, and NO Concierge response also, so what is the point to offer me special level of service for large land owners then not even reply to a serious issue which has kept me from my projects for two days? This is a disappointment. Good luck with shadows off, and Lindens please fix this bug.

Instant crashes when editing.
04-03-2005 09:02
I have an Athlon 64 3500+ CPU along with an Nvidia 6800 GT OC video card. It would seem whenever I select an object, then right click Edit, Instant SL freeze/lockup. I am able to end the application with the Task Manager. However, this crash can be recreated 100% of the time. Has anyone else experienced this anomaly?

I am confident it is one thing that is similar in all of our inventories. I did a test account, and guess what..it works like a charm. My real character, crashes instantly when I log in.
It's not the hardware....its not the shadows.....both are set the same on my system. One doll crashes, the other doesn't.
It's something in our inventory.

I've just spen a whole day 8 hours deleting stuff from my objects folder. I sorted by name and deleted everything it showed it had more than one of. I'd select the second one down and press shift and then scroll to the other end and select the thing one from the end this was working I seemed to be shortening the list of multiple things down to 2 of each, well I still have a long way to go I started at the Z end of the alphabet and I'm just up to Snails now. I got side treacked and went to a party for a couple minutes and tried to give the birthday person a gift argh gave it to him before then crasho .Had to relog I was frozen again. Went back to the sandbox to continue with my deleting and now when I try to delete 15 things at once 12 of them are coming back. so I delete them again and get 10 back argh. It worked ok earlier what am I doing different ? Yes this probably should be in a different thread. But I'm still trying to fix my original problem of freeze up when object folder opens.
I was under the impresion they had finally made it possible to delete a lot of stuff at once It was going so well earlier. Whats the trick to it anyone know?
Ahh got it if you select a bunch of stuff and right click to delete it deletes but if you push the delete on the number pad it only deletes one or maybe 2 things anyway so far seems too be working better wiyth less stuff in object folder

I've lost a whole weekend of building because of it. 100% reproduceable crash simply editing an object

I think maybe I am having the same problem. My inventory doesn't seem to be effected, but I am now crashing every 5 minutes or so. I thought it might be the connection in the hotel I am in. It was not like this when I first downloaded, but now I can't seem to stay in. It sucks.

I am crashing every 3-5minutes. I too thought it was my connection because my internet company sucks, but it is not them this time. I see I am not the only one with this problem..which I guess makes me feel better..in some weird way. lol I hope this problem is fixed soon.

Still no better this afternoon. It's weird. I will be playing and suddenly not be able to move. I can spin or rotate, but not go forward or back. No more chat shows up. If someone's avie was moving or typing, it keeps moving, rotating, typing, whatever. The music keeps playing. It's very random.
Any sign of help for this?

hi lucynda,
I had that problem occasionally in 1.5 too, so i don't think it's related to 1.6

hmmm, well... I am just confused as hell...lol. I guess it could be some random firewall with the hotel connection. Everything else is working perfectly. I don't get why SL would be the only thing not working. And of course the hotel routed the place itsself, so tech support is not for the rooms and I am the only room having problems apparently.

I did the uninstall-reinstall thing that was suggested, but I still crash after a little while consistently. It's kinda frustrating.
