Huggies Digi-Chan :) Its that digi account is still in the process of being logged out. If the sim is over loaded and logs you out chances your AVIE is caught in the auto save process. (Autosaves are needed to make sure objects are not lost within the sim itself)......until the system cleans its self up. Did you continue to hammer the login with tries? this at times can slow down the login process and does for a few. But again this waiting popup box is totaly a waste. Because the popup box does not asways been your have to wait XXXXXX mins to log you back it. Its just some sort of mess contection between the server and your requist for login..

Happy To See you again Digi :)

i did get online after trying numerous times and fiffling around with things; not sure if its anything i did or a coinicdence but here are the things i tried in desperation:

i switched my pc back to my wireless network-plugged the router back in, cleaned out my hard drive using disk cleanup; cleared out sl's cache numerous times; reinstalled sl 2x; deleted all sl folders in appliacations & programs folder; cleaned out the registry of all SL entries before reinstalling; switched off the network by unplugging my router, reconnecting to just my cable modem;turned off all firewall apps, anti virus, and malware apps;

After replugging my modem in without the router, i was able to log in;

If i have this problem again, ill be sure to send my sl logs in Torley;

Yes, please, email me (torley@lindenlab.com) your log Caoihme! Anyone else who wants to send their SecondLife.log to me, can do so too. Look for it in:
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\SecondLife\logs
and simply email it as an attachment.

Clearly this is still aggravating--we tested behind-the-scenes and your accounts were able to be logged in fine. We're going to keep investigating.

Something is weird here.

i find no folder for application dada under my user name or under "all users". i'm using windows xp pro. is it different?

Digi: The Application Data folder is usually a Hidden folder, which means you can't see it through Windows Explorer unless you tell Windows to display Hidden and System files and folders. The way you do this is you open your Windows Explorer, and at the top, click on Tools then click on Folder Options. You'll next want to click on the View tab, and look for the folder icon that says Hidden files and folders. Click on that, and make sure the box "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. That should solve the problem for you, and you should be able to view the contents of your Application Data folder in it's normal place, which would be where Torley described. If not, then I'm not sure what else to tell you. :P

This is really getting annoying. I was at work all day long, I come home, try to log in. get that same message. Give up, go to bed, try to log in when I wok up a few mins ago... same thing. This has been going on for days now... is there any news as to when this situation is going to be resolved? I used the secondlife://plum link to log in once. after that it didn't work for me. Just got the same message. I can't take care of my business when I can't even log in to get there. sigh...

login problems
05-04-2006 20:28
I am sitting in a hotel trying to login and am getting the same "unable to login, login server never recieved packet" error as listed above, could it have something to do with firewalls? I have not had problems with this machine at home or on a number of other wifi or wired connections, the hotel system is not letting me connect to my work stuff either with weird errors I have neverf seen before... leading to my conclusion that there may be a firewall or other software involved?

(just food for thought since I wont be able to check at home until I return tomorrow)

was in a low populated area and went to teleport to a club property the tp failed and I was presented with a dialougue saying I had been logged out. I have been trying to log back in for 10 minutes everytime the login in screen stops saying waiting for a handshake from the region then says try again in a few minutes. Alternately, it has said I am being directed from another location and then it says sever did not receive packetts. grrr lol

Those who have not emailed me your SecondLife.log as described earlier in the thread, PLEASE do so. :)

We're still on this and have not forgotten--we need more info to figure out what's going on!

I'm hitting this same issue today, and am rather frustrated. I posted in the wrong forum to start with (my apologies - this is my first post), so I'll duplicate what I posted at the end of this post.

So far I've called LL and left a message, and am seeing if the hotel can turn off the Stateful Packet Inspection" feature, but I suspect I know what they'll tell me.

Is there any fix yet?

Thanks for ANY help out there!

ADDED:

I finally got through to LL help desk, and was told to tell the server support people at this hotel to go to here:

http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=TechConfigFirewall

Shouldn't someone have put this information out here, since the person I spoke to seemed to think this was a common problem?

Also, I'm still trying to get through to the server support staff, but I can just imagine this conversation. I'm gonna tell THEM how to configure their router, when no one else is having any problems with the current configuration?

Is this not still a SL issue?

I'm leaving frustrated and heading into a slow burn. It just should NOT be this hard.

My original post:

Trouble connecting when on travel

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am using a broadband connection from a hotel server, and keep getting either "Unable to connect. Login packet never received by login server." or "The system is logging you in from another location right now. Your Account will not be available until [fill in date and time]".

When I start logging in, before I get those messages, I get to "Waiting for Region Handshake...", then these things pop up - I get the first one listed first, then if I try again, I get the second message. After the second message, my SL app is left in some weird state where I can see the bottom buttons (IM, Chat, etc.), so there is no way to log in; I have to kill the app completely and start over.

This has now happened two days in a row, so it's not a simple logon issue. I *really* need to get this fixed. I've logged in from other hotel servers and not had this issue - other times I was on a wireless connection, though.

What can I do to prevent this from happening?

Thanks!

Just posting to confirm I got your email, Neit, and an important distinguisher to make in these instances--as we continue to investigate--is whether you remember connecting fine on an earlier version of Second Life, at the same location, with the same network setup.

Otherwise, it sounds like a different (but similar-sounding) problem which is not at our end @ LL... but apparently because some hotels have bad UDP packet routing. I don't know if they can reconfigure their routers, firewalls, or whatever they're using, but it's worth a shot.

I talked with several Residents who couldn't connect from one hotel but were fine staying at another location on their travels; this latter part sounds similar to what Neit described.

So please rule this out first. :)

From: Thanks... anyone else having the exact "Unable to connect. Login packet never recieved by login server. Please try again in a few minutes." problem, please share as well.[/QUOTE

Hi,

I'm not sure this will address this specific problem but it corrected a very similar one for me after first starting SL a long time ago. (getting stuck at "Verifying Protocol Version" after starting to log in.)

It only applies to Windows clients, although there might be other ways to make the same setting for Mac OS or Linux.

Right click the Second Life shortcut on your desktop or wherever you keep it, and choose Properties.

In the section for "Target" you should see something like this:

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe"

Add a space to that line and -port (13000 - 13050) (pick any one thats not already in use on your network)

So for example change the Target to:

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -port 13000

make sure that "-port 13000" is outside of the quotation marks and that you are editing the "Target" section of the Properties window and not the "start in", or other sections.

Do this for each seperate client you might have connecting through the same router, each with its own port number between 13000 and 13050

For example,
"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -port 13001
"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -port 13002

Thats what I had to do to be able to connect to SL when receiving a very similar error. I have friends who do not need to do this and have the identica router and setting that I have. Of course all other documented router settings, etc. still must be set correctly, too.

Each time SL is updated, the shortcut gets replaced, and I can't log in again. Each time I make this change I can again. The specicic error that this corrects for me is getting stuck at the "Verifying Protocol Version" section of the login process, but again, it might also help with this one - worth a shot.

Hope this helps and good luck!

PS - also wanted to suggest that this tip be added to the support wiki section on that specific error at:

http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=TechVerifyingProtocol

and possibly this one added too, if the remedy proves useful.

Torley,

As you've probably read in email, I've made a major pain of myself here with both hotel staff and their ISP company, and I keep being told that NOTHING at all is being blocked at the server/router end.

I remain sceptical, however.

In the meantime, I was told that I"ve shown up as logged in all day. Could it be that something happened this morning within SL that has my account hosed? Can it be reset to show me *not* in SL?

Also, it would be extremely helpful if there were some kind of debug tools I could run when logging into SL to determine exactly what is causing me to hang at the "Waiting for Region Handshake..." stage of the login process.

Thanks for all your help!

Willy,

Thanks for the suggestion - I tried doing this ealier today, after reading the FAQ file, and it didn't help. :( I tried several different ports, even.

I think either my account is wonky at the SL app level or the server has some subtle setting either enabled or disabled that is causing the conflict with SL. Hopefully someone will check my account at the LL level soon to eliminate that possibility.

Thanks again, though - who knows what might actually help, at the end of the day?

You're welcome, sorry it wasn't the answer...worth a try. Looks like this was probably the hotel's firewall, or as you indicated, something account / sim specific.

Good luck!
