Looks like they are working on it:
The following bugs were introduced in 1.8.4.6, and we are working on a new viewer to resolve them now. They should be resolved in 1.8.4.7, due out late today or early tomorrow:
* Snapshots taken in-world are now showing Name Tags, Text and HUDs * Toruses with animated textures cause drop in FPS * Frustrum culling causes object pick to miss when trying to select Shiny objects

Im having severe lag too but I had it before the upgrade too, I tried setting the options to the lowest and it didnt help, What on earth do you need to run SL? I have: -Nvidia Geforce 7800GT> OC'ED to 475/1100, runs fine on all games except SL -AMD 3500+ -1GB Ram, very fast latency
This is irritating the crap out of me

From: Jiffies Manimal norton got dibs on most of the cycles anyhow.
Hi Jiffies, I experienced your connecting to region issue as well after each update until I bought the tag line of LL stating it's my Norton Antivirus. Funny how other programs do not require these steps I'm about to post (hears the LL Choir singers---ahhhh this isn't just any program) At least for me, after each update the steps I have to do in order for SL to run w/out getting stuck on Connecting to Region: Disable Norton Firewall (5 minute option) Download & Install SL Reboot the PC Manually configure my firewall & remove the grant access for secondlife.exe because that file was removed when reinstalling the new version Add the access for SL back in using the new secondlife.exe Log into SL Note to LL: These are the ritual steps I have to do just to install a software that should be compatible w/all AntiVirus programs As for the drop in frame rates, I'll find that out when I get home from work. I've lost all hopes in "updates" meaning good things since 1.7 was introduced. Kiss the 45 fps & greater goodbye with all features inlcuding Local Lighting, Draw Distance to the max since 1.7 implemented. Hard Pauses with Shadow's turned on, Local Lighting brings me down to a grinding hault. Since 1.7, I now have only AA & Shiny turned on while Draw Distance sits at 100. LL You do the math woo whoo gearing up for a good rant if I experience the same bs a lot of folks here are experiencing Specks: Microsfot Windows XP Pentium 4 CPU 3.40 GHz 3.39 GHz, 3.00 GB Ram 228 GB HD Nvidia GeForce 6800

Hello everyone--as has been referenced, please keep checking Known Issues for the latest updates to these problems. I just checked with bug hunters and we're hot on the trail. Also, it helps to pinpoint what's going wrong, as "lag" is a big, scary word that can mean so many things. It's likely you may be experiencing an issue already known about and described, but if not, keep posting here and narrow it down further. Look for repeatable patterns, use FAST TIMERS (Ctrl-Alt-D for DEBUG menu and then select FAST TIMERS from there) with the colored bars to see what's hogging up the screen. It has some big words but is pretty easy to read. Always, always send a bug report inworld... that's HELP menu ---> REPORT BUG with the good details so we've got the info and your voice doesn't get lost. This is ongoing!

Well, for one, i appreciate to see some rantings... Because i am really tired of being used as a permanent betatester. These past two weeks have been the only ones, since a long time, when i've been able to at least enjoy SL without having to adapt to a new version... I mean do they NEED to make such frequent upgrades to fix "bugs" and produce others ? And when an upgrade has to be made, shouldn't it be betatested long enough to avoid us all to be stuck like this ? Come on, Linden Labs ! One upgrade a month would be already lots ! So scheduling one per week ? And having such severe issues afterwards ? All what i can say is that it makes unhappy customers. And i am one of them.

I have to apologize Torley, but it would help if you have read the threads here - nearly everyone here has described lag as meaning 'FPS DROPS TO ABOUT 1 or BELOW', and as has been discussed, we have been using the fast timers and discovered that the drop in FPS is accompanied by updateGeom being so high as to be completely off the screen. I'm sorry if my judgement is in error, as I usually think you do a fantastic job on these forums - a canned response is not what we are looking for, however, when we have done quite a bit of testing and experimenting to figure out what the problem is.

Marvelous, I decided to have one more try, then give up - no chance of doing anything meaningful tonight anyway...
So, I thought, reboot, reinstall the whole sorry thing and give it a final shot.
My W2K went straight into disk checking mode on the boot/SL HD! Coincidence? Maybe. Anyone else tried a reboot?
Anyway, I don't have animated revolving toruses or stuff like that in my sim, so I don't think that's the whole story. Have fun folks. Someone IM me when they get this one sorted out. I have had enough.
'night all.

Okay, as far as fast timers goes:
The problem starting seems to coincide with spikes in image update and/or render geometry and then the actual framerate drops are acompanied by world update taking forever.
This is on an ATI card with an Intel processor/chipset.

I'm having the same issue, however tori are not involved. I have a bunch of cubes with animated textures but no torii.

I experienced extreme lag after installing the upgrade..... I noticed extremely high ping values as as well as high packet loss values. I rebooted my computer and reset my router to no avail...... I get a normal ping value as long as i don't try moving. Editing and moving around the house I'm working on became an unpleasant 'feet-stuck-in-a-pot-of-glue' experience. Not much fun at all. FWIW I set up a torus-based fountain and it made no difference... Things were already pretty dire to begin with. See if anthing improves, eh?

I'm sorry if my judgement is in error, as I usually think you do a fantastic job on these forums - a canned response is not what we are looking for, however, when we have done quite a bit of testing and experimenting to figure out what the problem is. No worries--I have been reading and haven't commented further on things that I simply don't know about. However, I meant my post in a general way, as 1) FAST TIMERS is severely underrated and 2) there are others who've been reading and not posted who've asked me about the issues in question. I've directed them here. But more specifically, as before, this is a main thoughtline right now: * Toruses with animated textures cause drop in FPS
So inclusion, not exclusion. I'm going to check this out more personally in detail as well. It's been confirmed that spheres with animated textures will manifest what was described earlier too--cubes, I'm not sure of yet... but this is ongoing... best way, as is often the case here, is many Resis sharing their experiences and putting the pieces together. I'll be looking for any patterns and if I hear anything else, I'll provide that info too.

Lee Linden Knows All Bout It...
03-01-2006 15:42
Called LL and Lee L. states that the engineers know all about it, and apparently he did too since he has an answer. SO...the engineers have to 'diagnose' it, change the 'code' then then will probably fix this UNIVERSAL BUG by the next update..possibly a week..though Lee emphasized that he 'did not say this'.
The UNIVERSAL chant 'it's on the client side' was attempted by Lee. However when almost ALL your customers have the prob...seems like they SHOULD CHANGE THINGS TO SUIT THEM. No? Yes. And Lee assured me they WILL FIX IT. Just not within the next few seconds. But in the VERY NEXT UPDATE. Seems like they do the updates every WEEK or so.
Don't think I'm the only one who called. The answer to this question is getting ready to be placed on a helpline recording for Linden Labs.

Oh heck..... torii with animated textures? Bang goes my avatar then My horns and talons are all torii and, yup, they've all got animated textures (I used the trick that leaves the textures moving after you remove the script). I'll have to see if I can rustle up a non-animated version for this week.

Major Lag
03-01-2006 15:54
Can't even play the game, Im luckyif I move 1 frame in about 5 sec or longer From: Silas Sachs This wasn't a problem until the latest update, although a friend of mine has been experiencing it since 1.3. I wanted to see if others were also experiencing this defect. Basically if I move new geometry(building, etc) into the scene, even a few meters the UpdateGeom time will shoot sky high(off the scale and off the screen) and my framerate would drop from 25-60 all the way down to 1-5 for about 30 seconds, and then everything returns to normal for a bit, before it occurs again. I've tried disabling each rendering feature one at a time to see if maybe trees, land or particles were causing the problem. But the only thing that worked was shutting off volume, which essentially quits rendering all prims and not real usefull unless you like staring at empty plains. If you have this problem as well, please file a bug report. This was not an issue before the update, it occured immediately after the update, obviously something is broken in the graphics. I'm running 2 x GF7800GTs in SLI on a Athlon 64, 3400+ Venice core, 2 gigs of ram. You can use shft-ctrl-1 and shft-ctrl-2 to get framerate and load information in game. Reference pics: FramerateUpdate Geometry.

When I log in my framerate gradually plummets. As an example, frame rates = 0.2, world update=2218, Ping Sim=9978, Ping User=14978. If I then leave things alone, the framerate will improve again, to about 4, but then another cycle of blue bars will come along and everything will freeze again.
I have a 2.6Ghz.P4 with 2Gb of RAM, and a Nvidia 6800GT card with 256 Mb RAM.
At the moment Second Life is unusable, so if it is going to take a week to fix this problem, and things don't improve then I won't be inworld for a week.

Any chance they'll just put the old version back?
03-01-2006 16:08
If's it's gonna take a week or more to debug this release, wouldn't that make sense. Or is that something that they just don't do?

It won't take a week to fix this. MUCH sooner.
This "animated textures on prims causing extreme UpdateGeom lag" prob will be fixed in the next SL.
When? Keep checking for the new release as soon as it's available ASAP. Historically, problems like this have been fixed in a day, or a couple days tops. And thanx to each and everyone who already sent bug reports and provided info here.
(UpdateGeom lag from different circumstances is an old nemesis of mine... grrrr.)

From: AJ DaSilva I don't seem to have any issues with llTargetOmega stuff, but will test more later. On the plus side, I'm getting some quite impressive framerates the times it's not bad. Oh, and they disabled attaching images everywhere but classifieds and gallery because the forums were starting to break. Where did they announce that? I just wasted a bunch of time trying to figure out if it was my browser or something. coco

Really? Well I was having the trouble in a sim which I own that has NO animated textures.
I suspect something more fundamental has been broken. This sort of thing is getting too familiar for my liking. As another poster observed, the idea of an UPgrade is to improve things - not cause a steady reduction of the usability of a product, which is what's been happening ever since 1.7...
