Holy Chowder these are great Chip. Wish I noticed this thread earlier.

Do you have a template that shows where the male/femal eyelashes are at? I keep uploading head textures and I still can't find where the edges are for the stupid eyelashes

The eyelashes are in the upper right corner of the head template. If you want to leave them unchanged just make sure the upper right corner is transparent. If you want to change the color of the lashes I think you can find something that shows the actual lashes in the /character folder.

if anyone is interested I have the templates uploaded in a notecard (and attatched to some skin/cloths) in a free notecard at "Legith's Island Lighthouse" Lozi(49,125)
now some more work and I'll make something I actually think is good. (I'm my worst critic) |

Thank you very much for your hard work on these templates, Chip. I'm just getting started designing clothing (with eventual plans of fully skinning my avatar), and I was at a loss for how to start. You've saved me weeks of gnashing my teeth getting things to line up properly.

Key to a successful SL - Values. Key to a successful SL business - value added before the sale, and value-added after the sale. It's the way things work best. Value ain't about $ - it's about relationships! Excellent! ![]() I think that is sig worthy Merman! _____________________

Chip, thank you for the templates. I used them yesterday to fixed a couple of items where the seams were hideous. And PRESTO! They were fixed!

How annoying that they're not marked on the original templates, grr. ![]() ![]() Aren't the wireframes included in the Photoshop files downloadable from the SL site? It was on a layer called something like "UV Map" or something... ah well. ![]() Chip rawks. ![]() _____________________

Hmm Ya know what I think Was somewhere stated that uh ya these are in linden section, and Chip darlin You open the linden ones up with photoshop they give you all the layers almost exactly as you have them posted so hun you didn't do anything new Photoshop gives them in layers so darlin stop taken credit for what you didn't do All you did is some spliceing to make them look better and I have to say any of you that are falling for thias need to look at the linden ones in PS cus um he did nothin new. Btw Chip your claiming you made these can you tell me how on earth you configured on the angles and 3d things nessicary to see how somethin will fit over the SL avatar body seeing as you are only a player and NOT a linden and are in no way able to disect the game or even do anything in which would make it capable for you to make the templates, and one last word people just cus a BIG name says he made somethin doesn't mean he did it makes him only more able to steal credit for somethin others put hard work into doin to make are wanting to make clothes easier I.E the lindens. Chip you should be ashamed of your self.

I guess you kinda missed the part where Chip said:
Thanks everyone These are really just a combination of two existing linden templates. ![]() _____________________

Chip you should be ashamed of your self. No Shepra, you should be ashamed of yourself for not reading the entire thread before jumping down the throat of someone who says they are edited versions of what the Lindens offered, only better. _____________________

Try the ones on page two of the thread Shepra. They are completely custom. I guess it was too much trouble to read the entire first post. Even the templates on the first page have many custom features, like the color coding of all the seam connectivity and skirt overlap. And while you're looking the gift horse in the mouth, maybe you can help me out with a molar I'm having problems with

As a noob I found the Linden templates helpful, but clumsy. That these are superior is the smallest thing to appreciate. That you see the value of the commons and choose to contribute so generously to them is a testament to your character. Your willingness to share your knowledge and encourage open discussion is deeply appreciated and I can only hope that many other citizens emulate you in this.

I came to this forum figuring I would read up a bit and try to figure out how to make my own clothes. I'm sure this will make my first time a lot easier.

wow, all Chip does is help people out and someone has to come off like that - makes me lose faith in the whole damn human race - then i use one of CHip's templates and it's restored again.
thanks again for contributing to the community chip - instead of try ing to find fault like others sometimes do. Chip has helped me without even knowing it! Thats the proof the guy is giving back, and i know a lot of others are in the same boat as me. Ashamed? He should feel proud, and I know the feedback from so many will make him so. good job Chip, cheers, Trent |

Thanks so much for the kind words everyone. It's deeply appreciated. And no harm done by any naysayers. I might have thought the same thing on first glance at the first two templates in this thread which are mostly just a revamp of the LL templates. If I'd just flattened the Linden PSD files and posted them I'd have deserved the chewing out, hehe. It's all good. Glad people are finding them useful. Be sure to grab the new and improved ones posted in this thread: /109/1c/26836/1.html

Using the Templates
11-21-2004 07:53
As much of a blessing at these templates are, using them turned out to be more difficult than I had realized. I have done some modelling in Raydream and Evoia but only with textures mapped to relatively simple primitives so I was not prepared for the level of distortion involved in mapping relatively coarse textures to such a complex form. After uploading the 12th slightly tweaked version of a skin and finding the pattern in the crotch area still bizarrely twisted and elongated, I was ready to throw up my hands in despair. THEN I realized what a lot of the designers here most certainly already know and do, but which other relative novices such as myself might not think of. I needed to SEE how the template maps to an avatar, expecially MY avatar if she is going to wear the skin I am designing.
So, I uploaded the templates and used them as the textures for the body tatoos. This allowed me to examine closely how they map to my avatar. I confirmed what I had discovered through experience: some areas stretch so much that it is difficult to impossible to add any detail at all, at least if I am going to limit myself to 1024x1024 maps. AND, in some areas, no scale is going to translate well. I was having particular trouble with the ventral part of the underarm. To get a better idea of what was happening, I took Chip Midnight's map and colored in the areas that I thought I was having the most trouble with, color coding the fill so that I would have as little trouble as possible seeing which sections of the wireframe were involved. As I had suspected, one area blurs out. If I could get the attachments to work here (the kind of challenge that I am becoming used to in SL) I could show you that while one section in the underarm area maps fairly clearly, one below it is virtually unreadable blurs out. The problem occurs near but not at the seam. I also colored various areas on the front and back sides of various body parts that I thought should align when the textures mapped to the body so that I could see how well they actually line up. They reminded me of the little tabs I would put on the clothes I designed for my paper dolls! This too was helpful in demonstrating that I might need to make some adjustments so that seams would meet, well, seamlessly! I realize that this whole process is implied in the figure in the lower left of the template provided by Midnight, but it took me banging my head up against the limits of the process to get the message. I hope this helps others who are as inexperienced as I am. |

Yep, there are definite problem areas in the UV mapping. One particular row of polygons on the inner thigh is especially bad. After a while you'll get used to it and know what areas to avoid putting detail in.
