OK... Is there a similar clothing tutorial for the GIMP? Do I need to go pore thru all of these posts, or... is there a tutorial already in existence?

Thanks!

Still have a question
08-08-2005 00:58
I have read this tutorial a few times, tried working with Photoshop and am still stuck :( Can someone please help me? :)

My problem is, I have my Photoshop open, I open the upper body template, then I open my fabric as step 1 suggests. Then step 2 completely baffles me. How do I copy the fabric and paste it onto the template? I have succeeded in pasting it in about 4 different steps but then it creates 4 different layers. And step 3 kills me lol, I have no idea what that does except cut around the pattern? At least that is what I have been able to do so far...

So if anyone could help, I would appreciate it very much :) Getting pretty frustrated with this but would love to learn how to make clothes :)

Thanks!

i wouldnt bother posting here for tutorial help

Me and many others nver get replies.. I think the thread should be closed as from what I can gather only a few exceptional few can gain access to the tutorial and the rest of us just keep waiting to hear when/if this link will be fixed

the original poster long since disapeared and the last thing i heard was they were getting a new website server or something so i have |NOOO idea but its frustrating to be offered something as brilliant as this, to not have access due to broken links and then get no response from your queries as to why and when?

:(

Thankyou for this guide. I am a complete newbie to things of this nature. (only just got around to downloading a 30 day trial of Photoshop CS2 hehe). Hopefully I will be able to get the basics down by then. Luckily I have a Wacom Graphics Tablet hanging around somewhere from my old PC. Should make things easier.

Again thanks. This will fill my evenings up hehe.

Hi neph.

Thanks for a great tutorial, step by step instructions are always the best. Unfortunately, none of it worked for me. At all. My photoshop just would NOT do any of the steps it should have, so..I dunno. Just some examples:

1. Refused to cut/paste into layers.

2. Couldn't select white areas...it would grab huge sections of the template instead.

3. Refused to show the fabric layer on the template.

So...giving up. But thanks for a great tutorial anyway.

GREAT, Neph! Now if only someone could teach me how to do it in the old Metacreations Painter program!

The Sadly Photoshopless Bhodi

There is an open source program called Gimp that you can download for FREE FREE FREE! It is availble for Windows and MAC. But it is pretty damn good. I used this until I finally got Photoshop. I actually prefer to use it for some projects, still.

Awesome tutorial, I only signed up yesterday and I'm very interested in designing new clothes for my avatar, this would have taken me hours without the tute.

Here's my first attempt.

Missing something...

If I may quote from the tutorial?

10.) Click the eye next to the fabric layer to hide that layer. Setting white as your foreground color in your toolbar, use your Paint Bucket tool again to fill in the area inside the black.
This will be your alpha channel, and indicates the transparency of the map- black being completely transparent when applied to the avatar, and white being the area of the garment seen.
Select your wand tool again, right click inside the image and choose "select all", and either hit ctrl+c or edit/copy to copy the black and white image to the clipboard.

Okay..so I click on the fabric layer to hide it...set white as foreground color...and what layer are we filling the black with white?? This is the only step that's throwing me, because it's not clear. I had assumed at first it was the fabric later..found out it wasn't. Then I thought oh..maybe it's the layer that will be the alpha channel? Also doesn't work..so is it the template layer?

Can someone with experiance with this kindly point me to exactly what layer we're supposed to be doing this on? I've been trying to make a simple teeshirt for three hours now and end up with a finished product that's nothing more than red colored bleed lines.

Alpha layers - PS CS and other tips
09-11-2005 14:35
From: Ameretto Fredericks
I upgraded to PS CS and this is why im having the alpha prob. See in seven i could just say save as tga and it would for some reason automatically save the transparents as needed. Now its as if i have to litterally make each individual section in the alpha varying shades of grey by highlighting and then going to the alpha layer and filling the highlighted areas with the shade of grey or white or black i need. is there a way to set the alpha save so that it does it for me or do i have to try to down grade back to 7??

I'm a new resident, and just tried my hand at making something, using the templates provided. The "work layer" is already a transparent layer, so you can just make a "layer via copy" for each layer you want to work with. Also, you can set the layer to transparent in the little popup box when making a new layer. With CS you can do layer sets, this is terrific for grouping the different parts - for example working with the different parts of the front upper body garment. What I do is frequent save in .psd format - re naming each step (top1, top2, etc) without merging or flattening layers. When you've got what you want for that piece, save un-merged, then highlight the layer set folder and you can just merge that layer set into one composite item. Follow the instructions to create an alpha channel from there for that layer set.
Also, I've created custom shapes based on the templates - using the freeform pen and selecting the middle tool bar box to create paths (left box is for shapes, right for fixed pixels), then just left click around the template and finally to join the shape. Then under Edit you can "create custom shape" . This new shape will be loaded into your shape tools and can be used for each garment you wish to make. You can always do a transform if it isn't the right size as the template, and it will be a solid, hard edged shape.
I have tons of styles that I've found, especially from Adobe studio exchange (freebies!). They are quick ways of adding cool textures to specific shapes.
Brushes also make great add ons, like designs, tattoos, and if you get creative with layer styles, it makes it look more 3-d.

While the templates I downloaded have an alpha channel already created under channels, the little icon that looks like a piece of paper with the edge curled is the one that allows you to create one.

As an owner of a previous version of PS, while it did take some getting used to, the CS is a really fabulous version with alot more features, and I am hoping to upgrade to CS2 shortly.

Help pwease

I loved the tutorial. I had a lot of people who tried to explain to me how to use photoshop and even paint shop but I still never got it. AFter this tutorial I was able to start making things right away.....Now What I want to do is have an outline around the final shape of my clothing. In this tutorial you can see a dark purple one on the last picture example. I want a smooth line like that and it's practically impossible to just trace around the shape with the paintbrush or pencil tool and get a straight outline. Sooooo..any ideas ..outline tutorial {insert here}lol Thank you for

you could just copy the part of the image you want an outline around. paste it into another layer. enlarge it so the outline is as big as you want it, and change the color to whatever you want it to be.

edited to add: you can also use the brush tool. select the brush size and color you want. if you hold down shift, it will draw straight lines from point-to-point.

Help please?
09-23-2005 14:09
I've been working with this tutorial for three days now. I never could have gotten as far as I did without it. It's wonderful.

I have one question, though. I've been trying to make unusual neck lines in my clothes and am not able to get around the SL neck sliders. The texture is filling in the background color (created in step 12) wherever the fabric doesn't cover. I AM supposed to be applying the texture to the SL "create a piece of clothing" screen, right? Or am I just being dense and there's a way to apply the texture somewhere else?

Examples below...

hi aurora!

it looks like you are having issues with the alpha channel.
check out this thread, download the file, and follow the instructions provided to install the file- its a HUGE time saver over creating the alpha channel manually.

if you or anyone else has questions regarding this tutorial, i will be happy to help with them. currently, the best way to get ahold of me is to email me directly at: pixeldolls@nafii.com

the more specific you can be about the stage that is giving you trouble, the better- unfortunately i am limited to answering photoshop questions at this time. picking up PSP is on my list o' things to do, unfortunately we are currently in the process of moving cross-country, so i have no good estimate as to when i'll be able to get to work making myself PSP-competent :P hopefully soon :)

thanks!!

Help Me Too!!

I too enjoyed and got a lot out of the tutorial. I didn't know how to use photoshop and it helped me tremendously. However, I'm stuck on the 'tool wand'. It's not outlining the medium bleed areas. I have it set to about 25 as per instructions but it's outlining all the lines inside and out including the words palm, arm, etc. Please help

I downloaded the photoshop free trial to do this tutorial...will it work or does it have to be photoshop CS...also...what if you are trying to create something like shoulder patches on a shirt? How does that work? Because wouln't you have to put half on one arm template and half on the other...confused a little there...awesome tutorial tho..been looking for one like this since I joined SL.
