Neph,

You are wonderful.

Now, do you think you can tell me how to do *underwear* and *swimsuits* right? I can't seem to get that crotch area right. And a lot of undies in my inventory that other people have made have awful gaps or weird thigh intrusions on them as well.

What IS the secret???? LOL

Hi Maggie!

Unfortunately there is nos ecret to that, its trial and error. The mapping is odd through that area, and the area that covers the crotch ont he avatar is incredibly thin.
Here
is a link to a discussion about using templates ont he avatar and taking snapshots to refer to when working with the templates in photoshop- this is a great method and will probably give you the best idea of how to cut the garments.

i think there was also a thread a few weeks ago that talked specifically about the bikini area on the template...i'll see if I can find it :D

I am useing PSP 8, it was expensive for a hobby, but not nearly as bad as Photoshop. As far as I can tell they work very similarly and both have advantages and disadvantages when compared to each other. The biggest disadvantage I can see to using PSP, so far, is that most places that offer tutorials on creating textures etc, offer them for Photoshop and these frequently dont translate well to PSP. I'd offer to put a tutorial in for it, but I honestly have too much on my plate at the moment, I will be more than happy to answer any questions in game if I know the answer ^^. I'd also like to take a sec to thank Kris Ritter for helping me figure alpha channels out =)

*edit* Oh my gosh I just read up a little. I have a, underwear alpha saved that is pretty cleaned up in the crotch area. If you like I'll post it so that you can use it in your own designs. It's for PSP though, and I have my SL downloaded templates resized to 1024 by 1024 for clearer textures so you may need to resize it to work with the origninal 512 sized ones.

I don't make clothing but have alot of people ask me about alpha in regards to textures and making clothing. I got tired of hunting for this link and about a month ago finally put the link on a notecard that I now hand to people.

I direct them to this thread for one of the best tutorials for clothing..and an insight into alpha textures.

Thanks for posting it. I know it has been a great help to alot of folks.

thank you thank you thank you :D :D

it makes me so happy that this is still found usefull and informative :)

one of these days i am going to get around to putting parts II and III together. :p

I REALLY wish i could port this for gimp and psp as has been requested, but i have an unfortunate gaping chasm in my knowledge :p
I'll look into getting my hands on those programs though, and see how easily these steps can translate.
A rosetta stone for clothing, of sorts. ;)

I might take a crack at a PSP tutorial. I'm hardly a known clothing designer, but I know PSP, and have done clothing in it. I might be able to come up with something :)

If you use photoshop, you can make a pretty realistic looking tee shirt material by adding some noise to the image.Play with the settings to suit you. :)
