What would you do if you had an Island/SIM?

Nope, you only get to change the land textures if you own a private sim - you get a new menu called Estate Tools or something like that, where you can set the land textures (you can list 4, and as the land goes higher it will gradient to the next texture on your list), set the sun, and some other stuff.

Are you saying if you 'own' the deed to a property on an Island/SIM you do not have these 'tools'

From: Cory Edo
Not sure what's involved in landlording, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't involve plumbing or shoveling the driveway, so I'd give it a shot. My best guess would be dispute resolution between tenants, making sure someone didn't go past their prim limits, and taking care of the occasional griefing attack/contacting LL about sim performance problems.

Sounds like easy money doesn't it? ;-)

That would be a great thing to try. Would you have courtiers and such, or were you thinking more along the lines of having a monacrch and then everyone else as happy citizens? Do you think it would be possible to treat everyone equaly?

Leon

To give everyone enough space to live well I imagine everyone will be at some time each week a courtier and the rest of the time they'll be pulling pints, milling flour or writing the scrolls etc. I don't intend having a middle layer of aristocracy as that would spoil the pure intention of the experiment. It's a test of my character as much as a political idea.

Garnet, this is becoming philosophical (sociological?) pretty quickly :-)

I'd be very surprised if you could pull this off. With all the best intentions in the world there will be people who you either get on with better or who others perceive you to get on better with.

I do not believe you could treat everyone equality all the time (unless you have no emotions) and the minute you are perceived to favour anyone of a group of people you'll create layers of access to you, i.e. a middle layer of aristocracy?

If you're talking about a rental island on a private sim like Hiro's, Azure Island or Anshe's, then no, you don't. At least the way Hiro works it, the parcel you're renting is deeded to your group (which gives you the ability to set your music stream, ban people, etc.). Hiro still retains full ownership of the entire sim and he's the only one with access to these estate tools (land texture and sun settings), since his name is on the bill. Even if you purchase an island with friends and deed the entire thing to group, there's only one person that gets the bill - and the estate tools to go with it.

This is the way its been explained to me, and what I've read off the SL.com website regarding private island purchases. If I dun goofed it up, someone let me know.

Man, after landlording for real, SL landlording can't be nearly as bad. Like I said, plumbing....

Well, there's no challenge in an easy experiment is there? :) It would be as much a test of everyone else's characters as well, to see who tries to manipulate me and who becomes paranoid.

One sim isn't really big enough, but I guess I could make do.

If it hadn't already been done, I'd probably build some kind of Toontown. Like Taco, but maybe with less gas.

Humongous egyptian temple in the clouds. No ground level (don't know how I'd pull that off) but basically, you fall below 600m, you get ported back to 1000m and continue falling, so it seems you fall forever. Unless you land on the temple again.

I'd try to recreate Puerta de Mogan, a little fishing town on the coast of Gran Canaria. I was there last week on holiday and found the place really inspiring. All I could think of was "Wow, I'd love to recreate this place in SL!" which is a little sad I know.

Then today I stumbled across the Seaside village by the Forest of Kahruvel in Cowell sim and realised that someone else has done a pretty awsome job already!

What I'd really like is forty or so sims to create a wilderness preserve with hiking trails and amazing views. I've found SL to be a very 'built' environment and it would be good to have more wild places to explore. (But while tier is $200/month per sim that'll have to be a pipe dream.)

Mmmm.... I'm too realisticaly minded to contemplate this kinda of utopian society... just can not see it ever happening.

It might be interesting from an experimental angle to try, but who would do the entirely objective reporting of the findings ... couldn't be you or anyone withing the experiment?

Anyone know if this has been done? Can't access SL at the minute so can't check out Taco?

Interesting idea. (I find everything interesting, don't I?)

Wouldn't be very exciting for people to visit though ... unless you knew it was there ... what would you have a groundleve?

Actually is it possible to have the 'island/sim' up in the air as opposed to whatever 'ground' level is? Not sure this is making sense!?

Actually, I've found myself looking at all kinds of RL objects and thinking about how I could create that? So far I'm only thinking about it ... a lit of thinking and very little doing?

This is definately a recurring theme isn't it? I think you are the third person to mention this ... actually the others were more along the lines of autonomous 'critters' than an wildlife/nature scene.

I recall reading here on the forums about someone who was actually doing this ... if you read this, please post details of where I can see it?

What I would do hmmm

It's like asking me what I would do if I won the lottery.

I think I would build a city. Maybe more of a artist community. Shops yes but art galleries. Loft syle appartments above. Maybe a area to hold classes. Make a hostal type place for lost newbies. Give them a month free rent til find there way in the world. Of coarse I would have to make enough money back to pay the land teir but I also would like to help new residents as a way to give back.

If it was costing me $195 per month, I'd sell it..

^I'd do that too.
hehe, but if I didnt have to pay, I'd build a creepy mansion and make a murder mystery house! and a maze, and a sandbox.

The title says it all.

If you were handed an Island and 'all' you had to pay was the $195 per month, what would you do with it?

Leon

I would build an enormous Mount Olympus themed club/adult play space and invite all comers to a never ending partay!

It sounds like a good idea, but I'm guessing most 'artist' communities would have a short shelf-life. Does anyone know of a SL artisit community that have been around for ages?

Thanks

Why a maze? I've seen a few, but can't quite figure out the appeal?

I'd get Cadroe Murphy to make his Ringworld a permanent feature at 768 meters. With a hangout area in a #3 hull. Drop a cable of shadow-square wire at about a 5-10 degree angle to a Rim Wall mountainside all along the edge of the sim, so you've got an "on the ringworld" scene at the sim surface, and a "whole view" scene at orbital altitude.

I do have a sim and at first I wanted it to be a wildlife refuge with lots of open space and only maybe one or two small buildings at most--very lush with waterfalls and lots of plants and animals.

I did that and lots of people said they really loved it. They begged me never to change it.

But eventually I got tired of not seeing very many little green dots and now it is mostly just my store. There are still nice areas to hang out, but mostly people just hang in my swimming pools in the retail area.
