From: Winter Phoenix Say it took ten minutes for a land posting to show up on the for sale chart. This would be a major bad thing because what? Minor inconveniance far as I can see. There are times when a person might want to sell the land *really* fast. For example, you see that a piece of land has become available in your home sim at a rock bottom price and you need to free up some tier in a hurry before someone else buys the land you want. This has happened to me before. In this situation, it could be classified as a major inconvenience. It would probably force me to release land rather than wait for the delay to end. This is a rare situation, but real. In general, I don't see the delay as a bad thing. It could be good for casual land owners. It isn't something that I want, but it's okay as long as I can turn it off in preferences. One very small change that LL could make is to have $1 sales behave the same as $0. It's confusing that $0 is safe, but $1 isn't.

Lawful Evil, or Lawful Neutral? I figured Jonas for Lawful Neutral.
Shack Dougall, I recently wanted to buy some land "really fast". I was at limit for my tier, so I did the math, and abandoned a strip along the back of my property equal to the difference in what I needed and what my future acquisition measured. I could have marked it 1L per square meter. but what would the point be? At at price that WOULD have attracted a swooper, I'd be richer by...512 lindens or less...and I'd have half a dozen flying, rotating, billboards behind my house. This way, maybe one of my neighbors will petition Guy Linden, and I'll just have a neighbor with more land.
I'm in favor of a default delay in immediate listing of land.
I'm also in favor of banning the (deleted to avoid being banned) of SL from my parcels. I don't care if it IS legal, it's still wrong. Laws imperfectly reflect morality, not the other way around. At least it's not supposed to be the other way around.
Oh, and the idea of going CE on some swooper does sound nice...until I think of the possibility of one succeeding at the land buy. Be careful of poking at wasps hives. You might get stung.
P.S. Is transparent reference to a players name, without actually using that name, legal on the forums?

I didn't read the whole thread so pardon if this has already been suggested. It seems to me this whole business could be easily solved by allowing any land transaction to be reversed by the original owner within a set amount of time. The money paid by the buyer would automatically be returned to them and the land would revert to the previous owner. The for sale settings would also revert and would need to be reset before it could be sold again. If someone had their land swooped due to a mistake they could reverse it right away. The swooper has only had their time wasted and isn't actually out anything and the original owner is safe from extortion as long as they catch it within the time allowed for reversal.

It's a little more complicated than that. Perhaps the buyer had to tier up to buy the land. Maybe they had to buy $L. For this to be truly fair, LL would have to reverse a lot of things.

They'd have to make it so if the reversal put the buyer back into a lower tier they'd never get billed the higher tier. If they bought L$ they could always sell them back or hold them to use for a different purchase.

From: Shara Holiday i think the point is... why would you have to keep looking over your shoulder to do a simple exchange!.... kind of makes one a lil uneasy. you shouldnt have to be paraniod on your own land to do some business You can set one person to sell to before you open it for sale. Simple enough, and clearly visible in the tools right buy the price block.

From: Chip Midnight Good point. They'd have to make it so if the reversal put the buyer back into a lower tier they'd never get billed the higher tier. If they bought L$ they could always sell them back or hold them to use for a different purchase. This one has been talked about a lot I think. The key thing to remember is that Land Swoopers aren't the only ones that buy land. And it opens the door to all kinds of interesting human behaviors. For example, I set the land for sale at a price that I think is fair, but it gets bought immediately, so I think "hmmm, I must have set it too low." So then, I reverse the transaction and put it back on sale at a higher price. Or, I see that a person I don't like bought the land, and I reverse it. Some would say this one is fine, but it sets people up for conflict. And it depends on the length of time that you allow the rollback to happen. I've heard people talk about 24 hours, for example. The longer the uncertainty, the bigger the potential harm to an honest buyer. Let's say that I'm between two pieces of land. I decide on one, but then that one gets reversed. I then go to the second one and it's already been sold.

More great points, Shack. I'd think if something like that was ever implemented it would have to be a very short period like ten or fifteen minutes. That would protect people from botched up transfers between residents and it would encourage people to only do it when both parties are present. It's just sad to me that this still happens to people as often as it does.

From: Chip Midnight It's just sad to me that this still happens to people as often as it does. I feel the same way. The best solution would be to find a way to prevent people from making the mistake to begin with. If people are making mistakes, then it means that the user interface is confusing in some way. But I don't know how to change it so that the confusion is eliminated.

From: Lynn Kukulcan Get a trusty security orb. Set a parcel for sale in the center of your land. Set the security orb to llTeleportHome anyone you don't want there. Watch swoopers go bouncing! And it's legal!!! Unless you can have it TP instantly then you have the real chance of losing your land because all it takes is 2 seconds to buy the land, 6 seconds for the security orb to fire. Just beware, land owners. This is important stuff you NEED to be aware of that Lindens don't tell you about (or care about really). So it's up to you to inform yourself in any way possible. Forums, Help, Live Help, any means you can to educate yourself on this subject. I could have VERY easily (in fact I'm convinced I would have made this mistake) had this not come to my attention. Because this is just one thing you do NOT think about. Who in the world thinks that someone is going to come in and steal the land when your just trying to make a transaction with a friend or partner to sort out some land issues? NOT ME!! Not 'til now! I didn't know these bastards existed! Well now I know and I just want to get the word out so others won't have this happen and the swoopers will go out of business. An informed land owner will put swoopers out of business because they won't make the mistakes these heartless scum bastards wait for you to make. (also notice how it wasn't refuted how he taunted my friends over their mistake) *sighs* Just BEWARE!!!!

The system works, its simple. Whats complicated is the parcel joining and subdivision tools.

I had an interesting dealing with Swoopers yesterday.....only this time the swooper paid for it. What happened was not planned nor intentional. I was resetting a price on a piece of land I needed to sell quickly from 15,500 to 14,999 for 2048m of land. Well I typed in 1,499 instead and saw my error and proceeded to fix it immediately. While I was doing this, I was unaware that two Swoopers TPed and attempted to make a purchase, however, I completed my correction in time to beat their attempt. They ended up paying my asking price of 14,999 which was a fair value for the area it was in. Score one for the little guy I guess. Suprisingly, they didn't complain about it. Be a bit hypocritical if they did.

Yes it is very sad that people act like this. One can probably make a college course in Psychology trying to figure it out, but I think the lowest common denominator is $$$. It seems where money is involved you always find the worst kind of mumanity trying to scam honest but unknowing people out of whatever they can manage to get and then show such indifference as to make fun of them that they did it. sad indeed

From: Horris Fitzcarraldo Well I think people that read the forums even semi regularly know about land swoopers and such but the problem is so many people don't. People in sl---maybe 60% of them are probably (like me) unaware of just how close to RL this world really is and forget that the swindlers in rl are also in sl. I did read the forums quite a bit....checked the F1 help to see about land, etc but was still swindled by CP Costello --one of the worst people in sl--true car sales man. Yes I have learned after losing my land, tho I didnt lose much and since I have now formed a group and my land is held by a group of which I am founder and my sisters are members and land can only be sold to my husband or sister in sl...so bout all I lost was L$500 which is one months stipend anyway. HOWEVER....I now make it a point to ALWAYS inform every one I see building on new land about the problems with swindlers like CP Costello. As A matter of fact, I am thinking of making a REALLY big sign over my land advertising the facts bout losing land to swindlers.

But I dont see why a person cant be named when I have the facts in front of me and I know they are the guilty party....just like in RL some of the rules and regs of SL seem biased towards the criminal mind IMHO! Anyway I am still going to put a GIANT sign above my property explaining this major swindle being carried on regarding land. The very idea that someone is able to use a 3rd person program or what ever to spy on people trying to sort their land management out is something that should be corrected....someone did say there should be a short period of time in which you have the right to cancel ANY ANY ANY ANY transaction. IT HOPEFULLY IS TIME FOR THE OWNER OF SL TO TAKE ACTION ON THIS PROBLEM. I may not have lost much but many have lost all they had and it is not right. Thanks Savonah!

I agree with you on this. But I would have hated to see you suspended for merely trying to do the right thing. That would have been a travesty. Lindens have the rule that you can't mention any resident on the forums for anything derogatory, even if it's to warn others of a particular person. This is to protect everyone. Becuase if not done then bad people can come to the forums and defame good people as well with lies. It's a two edged sword.. on one hand you are warning the public of a bad person however a bad person can come on and place your name here and start lying through their teeth about you if this were allowed. So Linden Lab just suspends anyone who does it, period... it happens a lot and I'd have hated it to happen to you unknowingly.

Easy fix for this. Set the sale price any land you own to 1,000,000,000 L$ Do not change it until you wish to sell, and then only after setting all the other stuff (who to sell to, etc). Price change should be the last thing. Then even if you set to sell by accident, so what? That's about 30,000USD. Someone wants to pay me that for virtual land, feel free! ~Jessy

From: Banking Laws See? You failed to pay attention then caught it. If people just read like you did, there won't be a problem. It's not simply a matter of reading....it is the fact that people can actually do what the swindlers do with the unsuspecting having no recourse...UNLESS...as suggested by others, SL puts thru a policy that allows people a determined amt of time to cancel any transaction. When one is making changes to their land like setting amount for sale, etc, one SHOULD NOT EXPECT TO HAVE TO COMPLETE THE TRANSACTION IN A NANO SECOND!!!!!!! And no I dont want to hear that we should know....I hope you all remember your first days in sl, confusing..tons of things going on...tons of info.if you can find it...people griefing you on orientation island before you take your first step...the list goes on. These land swindles take place on new people, they need a chance at least to learn the ropes before losing their only chance to own first land without losing it to greedy swindlers.
