How about giving us the option of running on an old version.. or not update for say.. 2 weeks?

Shouldn't too hard, really.

EVERY week is a bit annoying.

Updates = Bug fixes. There is absolutely no way anyone can write code that will work on EVERY PC. Too many configurations.

New version = new bugs

perhaps just let us connect using older versions, the current one has no bugs to me.

The client and server in SL are two intimately intertwinned in SL to allow this. In the best of all possible worlds, you might be able to, but as the pessimists are fond of saying: we already live there.

"you" are not the entire server, and they can't normally allow multiple versions to connect to the same sever... doesnt really work that way.

Then perhaps just gather all the bugs up and give a weeks space before updates.. rather than every week. My own personal situation is that kills the first morning I have off of my 2 days a week.

Yes, but, again, you are not everyone. I'd rather the bugs get fixed as soon as possible.

I rather like the weekly updates.
I savor every new update like it is a belgium bonbon, never sure what will be in it, will it be nuts, something fruity, or has it a bit of liquer in it. Might not be what you are expecting but it will sure be something for someones taste.

Also this will give them a change to beter evalulate if these fixes have caused a new bug or not. Or if they work as desired. If they do a big update it will be more work determining what the cause of a new bug might be.

I hoped you reported the bug, btw. ;)

Yep. I mentioned awhile back that the increased update frequency was going to get annoying.

Doubly annoying since I have a custom keys.ini setup, and I have to reinstall it every time there's a new client, thanks to the braindead way SL updates itself.

Pretty much it's been keeping me from logging into SL as often as I might, because I look at the "new client required" and think "Again?! Meh, not gonna bother right now".

Bugs are annoying too, but most of them don't affect me at all, and few of them actually prevent me from logging in once a week unless I take some action.

It wouldn't be so bad if it were somewhat less frequent (once a month, say) and the updater was an actual patcher rather than a complete redownload and install of the client.

Let us all remember the disasters that were 1.5 and 1.7. Do you really want LL to "gather all the bugs up and give a weeks space before updates"?

Yes, and then the people who get screwed by the bugs are screwed for a month or two instead of a week or two.

No thanks.

does anyone do this?

I remember having to upgrade DOOM just connect via network (Doom 1.9 woot)

In starcraft you have to have the latest patches to run.

No, you don't. I can see by your reg date that you came in before 1.7 or 1.5, but... Trust me. It's bad when LL does that.

I answered if I wanted LL to wait 2 weeks or so before another update. I didn't mention 1.5 or 1.7.

If truly horrible rush it out..but for minor bugs, let it be a while.

I like the update approach. Release early and often.

Before that, we'd get these huge updates every couple of weeks and the grid would be incredibly unstable and everyone feared the update. These incremental updates are way cleaner.

I wish they would choose a new time though. Smack dead in the middle of business hours for the East Coast makes it hard to schedule project demonstrations.

The question you answered, however, addressed 1.5 and 1.7.

As has been said on other threads, paraphrasing ... It's a 20 meg upload. Since you are playing SL you have broadband. What does it take, maybe three to ten minutes?

It sucks that your prime playing time is when they do the updates. For me, I live on the US west coast and have Sun/Mon off. So that time is getting ready to go to work time for a week. It's the best time they could pick for me.

I like the updates, it shows that LL cares about second life, unlike "Other" virtual worlds that never gets updated.

LL is working hard to provide us with a better experience and instead of complaining try appreciating their hard work. Even though they might be a little slow, but give them a break

Actually, while I agree that moving the time so as to be more convenient to the player base is not only unlikely, but neigh on impossible, I am not so sure what is the point of always choosing the same day of the week.

Picking a Tuesday or a Thursday once in a while wouldn't be inappropriate would it? That would offer some relief for those whose off-work schedule keeps getting slapped with these updates.

And, perhaps as they get better at this, they will find a way to "slipstream" the updates without having to completely reinstall the entire client. After all, while having all these frequent updates has a lot of advantages, there is also the question of all that download for the new client to be accounted for.
