I have a custom keys.ini setup, and I have to reinstall it

You can put a copy of your keys.ini file into a folder that SL doesn't mess with, such as C:\SLcustomize

Then make a batch file, a plain text file with a file extension of "bat" that contains

From: CustomSLkeys.bat
Copy c:\SLcustomize\keys.ini "C:\Program Files\SecondLife\app-settings\keys.ine" /Y

Something like that.

This will make customizing your keys.ini file a one click operation.

Same thing goes for the colors.ini file, the viewerart.ini file, and other customization files that have to be done the hard way because SL programmers don't find it fun to write a program that does it for us.

The quality control on the programming at Linden Lab is much, much, much too sloppy to want them to wait a while and bundle up their changes into a big batch.

Cory has admitted that the SL code was a quick and dirty job, designed to get the system up and running FAST. The code was not designed to be elegant, stable or maintainable. Unfortunately, we're all paying for it now.

It must be tough just to bugfix and patch such code, much less add new features.

So, now that LL is a bit more steady, is anyone working on a code rewrite? Does LL have the resources to manage a rewrite?

*cough -open source- cough *

I'll take regular updates any day. I don't want Linden Lab sitting on bug fixes that will make my experience easier.

I answered if I wanted LL to wait 2 weeks or so before another update. I didn't mention 1.5 or 1.7.

If truly horrible rush it out..but for minor bugs, let it be a while.

Define minor bugs. There is an animation upload bug that has pretty much halted the creation of new animations for weeks now. This is not a minor bug to quite a few of us.

Trust us, you really don't want LL to go back to longer wait times between updates.

More frequent updates seems like a great idea to me. The update is quick and easy. Why wait for bug fixes and improvements. Every release since I've been playing has been no problem - and some have really improved my experience.

Unless you feel that the SL code is getting worse, then why not have the new code as soon as possible?

Maybe they should pick 2 or 3 different times/days of the week to shut-down for the updates tho. It would suck to plan one of your days off to be in-world and then find that the system is down.

A lot of other online programs have weekly updates, it's just a fact of life, and their update is usually a lot bigger.

You want them to like work outside California business hours or something? Only start-up firms with ambition do tha... nevermind.

The behavior of start-up firms has no bearing on the behavior of Linden Research.

Linden Research is a well established, well funded company with a large userbase. It is not delivery beta quality code, it is a finished product well worth the multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars some users have invested in i.... nevermind.

i dont really mind the updates, i just hate that the updates are "right now" mainly there to fix minor bugs introduced during the last rushed update. Some of the more recent ones could have been (found) fixed if they had just tested it (for atleast a day)

HTML on a prim not working i can understand, its complicated, stupid stuff like tabbing tru text entry boxes. sigh talk about craping in your own nest.

I wouldn't mind the updates at all, if the entire grid didn't go down for several hours - right in the middle of the day in my time zone - for every single one. Sure, if it's a major bug, then no complaints here.

But it's annoying to be locked out for several hours when I usually spend some time relaxing in SL, only to discover the whole update just fixes some incredibly minor bug, such as that one time they released a new version of the client *solely* to make it default to windowed mode. Not even a bug, but it seemed important enough for its own update nontheless! (I can almost imagine some spotty college student changing something minor like that in the code, then going, "Oh man, this is SO COOL, we've gotta push this to live RIGHT NOW.";)

Personally, I'd prefer it if they updated with major bug fixes ASAP, and just left the minor stuff to go along with the next major bug fix. But hey, since when has anything ever made sense in SL?

There has been some noise within LL about how weekly updates are too frequent for our own sanity, expecially for those in charge of coordinating the deployments. Hence, we're going to try to aim for updates every two weeks, while not ruling out an occasional emergency update as necessary.

The default target for an update will Wednesdays. I think that means: If it is ready on Monday then we'll wait until Wednesday, but if it there is any doubt that it is ready by Tuesday night then we may slip to Thursday if necessary. We don't like to deploy updates on Friday or Monday, so any non-emergency that slips past Thursday would have to be pushed to next Wednesday.

Andrew I think this is an excellent idea, since it helps the SL preformance in the end. Many online worlds do daily and weekly maintence updates. I don't see that SL should be any different in that respect. Once ever two weeks, even better :D cus I'm so addicted lol. Wednesday is excellent for me, that's my laundry, shopping day :D Bravo Andrew and LL! Excellent decision.

You people don't know how lucky you are. I play a MMORPG that the word update is a unknown term to them. When they do put out a update, it is "wow this would be a neat feature thing". Never mind fixing the bugs from the previous updates and adding new bugs on top of that. Post a complaint in their forums and it's deleted. Keep complaining and they axe your access. All I have to say to LL "Keep those updates comming"

Keep this fixes coming, but throw in a new feature or two to keep the punters happy.

They don't bother me at all since they happen while I'm at work. I just have to download and install a new client before I log in. Big deal.

OK, let's rephrase.

You personally want longer periods betwen updates.

What we are trying to tell you is that in the past, when we went sometimes a couple of months between updates, the ramifications were that when the update came, it had a tendency to change so many things that sometimes (often!) it broke other stuff.

This is bad.

Listen to those who have been there, done that.

It would be nice if the days were varied a bit, rather than waiting for Wednesdays - considering some people have every Wednesday (or whatever day) off work.

But I do think it's better not to wait till you have so many fixes going in at once that you don't know what's broken what if it doesn't go smoothly. (This is assuming the period for testing was lengthy enough.)

But it is really kind of hilarious - over on TSO Stratics, they're like people crawling through the desert dying of thirst, and have been for ages, not only never getting any updates, but never any hint that there will be another update, or any indication that anything will ever be coming; their cracked voices croaking into the empty spaces, "Is anyone there?"

Then the dev finally comes along and dispenses a few drops of water - just to say that yes, he's still alive - so that everyone can crawl along a little further, just a little further . . .

Those people would kill for the problem of too many updates!

It is an interesting problem - now that updates are becoming more frequent, downtime is increasing significantly when you have each update meaning 6 or more hours of downtime. If it starts to happen every week, then this does have an impact. I would definitely have more updates than less, and the sooner the better - it is important to find a balance, though. I would definitely much rather have the problem of too many updates than not enough.

I can see two weeks rather than weekly. With the occasional major bug fixed the next week.

Dialog line in scripts? Wait two weeks, sorry.

How about giving us the option of running on an old version.. or not update for say.. 2 weeks?

Shouldn't too hard, really.

EVERY week is a bit annoying.
